Was born and raised in Marquette. When I was young I watched the DSS&A trains whenever I had the opportunity. We lived on Fisher Street and would walk across the "Sand Bank" to the old round house. It was a great time and this video brings back truly great memories.
This is fantastic. Can’t believe how many times I’ve watched it. The music is wonderful too. I get tired of railroads only being associated with harmonicas and banjos. This is a treasure.
I can't tell you how many times I have watched this video presentation. This is pure historic UP GOLD. I'm planning on a model RR layout in my basement for the DSS&A and these old films will be invaluable to me to get it right.
This video brought back many memories for me. My grandfather Clyde Bucklin was the timekeeper for the DSS&A in the 1950's. My uncle Reggie Carlson was a train engineer for the LS&I. He took me on a ride when I was very young in a RS1 diesel engine and pushed iron ore cars out on the Presque Isle LS&I dock. I spent 2 weeks of almost every summer of my youth in Marquette at my grandfathers home on Fair Avenue. I remember the roundhouse, the yards, the LS&I iron ore yard at Presque Isle, the train line and yards east of Marquette. Great memories as I am a train enthusiast. Thanks for the great video.
I never got to hear and see a Baldwin center-cab before, thanks! The EJ&E ones I saw were re-engined already. Some of the most distinctive locomotives in the Chicago area, all decked out in orange.
Photos of the DSS&A on the dock in Marquette are really hard to find let alone old 8mm Film. This is pure gold for any fan of Upper Peninsula railroading. Usually when slides come up for sale of the DSS&A they command high prices and with good reason too. I can't believe what I'm seeing here. Thank You for sharing this gem!
@fmnut - I got to see the DSS&A Baldwin's breifly in Marquette, MI .in July of 1962. Most of the time coasting as engine only. But, once or twice, while traveling through downtown, two AS616's would erupt with a string of ore Jennie's ahead of them and shove them up the ramp to the docks .(they had their own - seperate from LS&I) And it would sound like Armegeddon!!!
great video!! Final run of the old DSS&A Shoreliner between Ishpeming and St. Ignace was made on January 12, 1958. Old DSS&A RR passenger train and engine crews worked Marquette-Ishpeming-St. Ignace-Marquette.
Marvelous to see the Soo Line designed cabooses at 18:55. I did get to visit the ore docks in Duluth or Superior with my dad, a Soo Line brakeman, when I was about 8 back in 1948. Great memories brought up with this video.
This is pretty amazing footage. I was just in Marquette a few days ago and the line heading east out of town along the shore is now a rails-to-trails bike path. Pretty unique to see all this film of the trains that piled that route for so many years. Thank you for posting this video.
It's sad that most of these scenes are just a memory. But, that's the way the railroad bounces. At least we have film footage and pictures to remind us of yesteryear.
This is the only film I have seen of the old DSS&A in the Marquette MI area. Thanks so much for putting in the time and effort to upgrade it. I've seen the previous version and this one is outstanding. The sound effects really add to it, too!
@@andreialexiev7858 the trestle was removed during 1999-2000. The steel portions were retained by Wisconsin Central for re use in rebuilding several smaller bridges. The wood portion was sold to a company that recycles old trestle timber.
@@fmnut Thank you! I'm sorry I didn't get to the UP sooner. I'm a Vermont exile in Western PA. I thought that the UP reminded me of the Vermont of my childhood. Now, gone with the wind.
Thank you! I model the DSS&A and am trying to construct Ore Dock #6 using hydrocal and Walthers Ore Docks kits. I have many of the pictures shown. I visited Northern Mich Univ to photograph the complete set of ore dock blueprints.
The steam sounds are from actual LS&I engines of the same class. The Grand Canyon RR had a small 2-8-0, while the Western Maryland Scenic has one of the larger ones. Some of the Alco RS-3 sounds are also from an actual LS&I engine.
Wow! The Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad had Baldwin centercabs? And I thought my Grandpa Carr's railroad the EJ&E only had Baldwin centercabs. Those centercabs had the muscle to haul just about ANY train on the D.S.S.& A.R.R! Very awesome.
@@scoobycarr5558 The DSS & A had four of the big brutes. If you check out " the Kantner Collection" on UA-cam by John Pechulis; you will see the improved version on the Pennsy. Incidently, one survives at the Illinois Railroad Museum, in operating condition!
casey jones Yes, for now. Unfortunately Michigan ore is getting more and more expensive to mine, it's only a matter of time before Tilden pellets won't be competitive price wise with other sources. So enjoy it while it lasts.
fmnut , I think you'll be happy with some up coming news about the Empire. Cliffs has been successful at refocusing their assets on domestic iron ore which definitely benefits the LS&I. I think the future of the LS&I is bright and if the Empire reopens, very bright. It must be one of the last "old fashioned " type railroads left in America
Wish that Canadian Pacific which had a stake in the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic had a heritage SD70ACU in D.S.S.& A.R.R. livery. Or is that actually to come soon?
The following segments of DSSA track are in service with CN: Trout Lake to Munising Jct., Humboldt Jct to L' Anse. Out of service segments include L' Anse to Baraga (CN), Nestoria to Sidnaw (E&LS), and Marengo Jct. to White Pine Mine (CN). All this is to the best of my knowledge. The rest has been torn up including all the track shown in the video in Marquette.

my GF complains of that music all the time, best comment ever 😂😂
Take a listen though, to Gerry Rafferty's City To City from the eponymously named album. You might change your mind slightly.

Wasn't that the end of passenger service on the line? Did mixed trains still run afterwards? It looks like a few of the films are mixed trains.

this railroad still fully operates the dock and line. A few GE C30-7s are still active but most main runs are the leased CEFX AC4400s now.

This really is excellent, I suspect that most people who watch this would not realise that you have added the sound, it is that good.

I wish I would've been able to grow up with this, although I've been alive for 24 years and intend to keep this, and what it is to date alive forever.

Great job! Brings back some memories.
Interesting but some tragical video. Very nice footage.
Cylons approved the music for this vid!
Yes, they did. I like using the BSG and House of Cards soundtracks. They don't distract from the visual the way other genres do.
At the least the LS&I is still shoving ore onto that same dock.
