At 3:32 keep going toward the shiny. It's another soul item. Easy pickup too(under the wood overhang). Since he didn't have any souls (which you probably won't either it's cheaper to let yourself get killed. Homeward bones are 500 souls each and dying is free.
This is great video that you should probably do the 1st 3-4 minutes of this video on every build just level according to what you're going for
