1:39 And let's not forget the fact that Martika's "Toy Soldiers" held off no less than Madonna's iconic "Express Yourself" from hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100!
3:11 "i just needed to do my own laundry ... Not be in this little universe that all revolved around me" Exactly! A real person in a fake biz. How refreshing.
Today (22 July 2019) is 30 years since her single "Toy Soldiers" topped US charts. I had heard of Martika through Eminem's work but never paid much attention to her music until this year. She sounds like an amazing, down-to-earth person! Like many of my favorite artists (George Michael, Kim Wilde, Tears for Fears) the music industry took its toll on her and she eventually had to distance herself from it.
I give Martika a lot of credit she did not get caught up in the fame and let it go to her head she's got her feet planted on the ground. I admirer her for that. She's why I started watching Kids incorporated. Next to Ryan but he's a different story. Cant' wait to see what she comes out with next
Agreed. Water gives a good indication of her potential with Latin pop rhythms and a glimpse of the kind of star she could have been in the 1990s when Latin music became a craze.
She burned out. She had all the talent those women had just wasn't for her. After doing it for years as a kid star then hitting the top of the charts and touring it played a toll on her. Not everyone wants the level of fame a scrutiny that comes with being a Madonna, Britney, Lady Gaga, etc. I am just happy that the girl turned woman who brought me one of my absolute favorite songs and will always remind me of my freshman year of college is happy and healthy. Love you Martika.
I personally think if she kept going and didn't quit she would've been been big in my opinion. She has a great and such an unique voice that the only place she could've gone was up.
***** Oh please. The pop stars of today are prepackaged garbage and spoon fed to us like sheep. Britney Spears is another lip syncing, synthesized phenom, which isn't saying much.

I agree 100%, if she persisted and collaborated with the right people, I believe she could've been bigger than Gwen Stefani or Fergie if not as big. She had killer looks and a killer voice. Her three number 1 hits, I can imagine those songs being # 1 today.
She suffered from anxiety. Looks like she had a panic attack during her concert (from the video). Maybe she made the right decision to quit because if not, she might be dead a long time ago.
she should have continued with pop and rock. her fans connected with that of her from kids inc. the kid and teen fans she had didnt latch on to her more mature, slower tone
She had a few big hits back to back in one to two years and then suddenly started complaining she was tired and it's happening too fast. So she disappears for a couple decades only to resurface on "Where are they now?" She obviously tried to come back nearly ten years later but the music didn't stand out or make an impression. No one knew she came back. If you hit it big you gotta ride that train while you're still on top.
April Gosa agree, I hate that people called them hasbeens when so many people that want to be in the industry and make classics hits hasn't even done it and she done it and wrote and produced her own material. I feel you that she saw what the industry was about and didn't want to chase fame but want to be an artist.
EXACTLY! Sure take a break to unwind and refresh. But you don't get off that train altogether. the music scene changes so fast. What's hip one day is passe the next.
Martika was everything in the late 80's/early 90's. Such a shame she burnt out. She's been promising a comeback(s) since 1998 and it's never materialized ☹️
i think her biggest mistake was not continuing with pop, rock, and dancing when she went solo. her fans would have connected more cuz thats what they were used to from kids inc
Wow. I actually give her some credit. She didn't let that fame get to her head. Hoping she is still around now. I would love a Kids Incorporated reunion. That would be awesome. I watched that show all the time as a child. I guess that's how I started to really love music.
You speak the truth. The only song I heard from her was "Toy Soldier", and that disappeared quick. Most of her fame in my little group came from being on Kids Inc. As for annoying, she was nowhere near as bad as Stacy Ferguson was on that show. Who knows, maybe she became a star in the rest of the Americas, and just never caught on in the United States.
@ShepAussie, Hi. Hey, I read that Martika did not quit the music scene, actually after she became clean from fighting a terrible substance addiction, she started a band named Oppera. It is amazing what drugs and such, can do to a person and how the lucky few, make it to the top again after their fall...Love Martika!!!!!!
@7mandoblu Also it's funny how the voice over said that Martika learned how to go with the flow. The title of her new single is called "Flow With the Go", her first new song in 20 years.
I use to have a crush on her when she was on kids inc. I use to watch it every Saturday lol. I miss the 80s smh. That was the good ol days they don't make music like that anymore! She's still sexy ,it's good to see that she's still got it and isn't strung out or dead.
I hate to be the Debbie Downer, but they act like she was some HUGE GIGANTIC pop star of the 80's/early 90's. I was a teenager then...This is how me and all of my friends remember her: (1) The annoying "Gloria" from that SUPER LAME show "Kids Incorporated" and (2) "Hey look, that annoying chick from Kids Inc. Now sings that "Toy Soldiers song!" Yea, we all thought Toy Soldiers was a good song, but it literally faded away as fast as it topped the charts. She was a random 1 hit wonder. Sorry.
when someone claims that they have never had low points and that everything is perfect, you know there is some serious issues going on, Gee, i wonder they could be?
I love how they don't even do their research and start out with "Born MARTIKA Marrero..." When she was in fact born MARTA Marrero. I mean come on...if you're going to do a "Where are they now" get your facts straight.
jdessell A hit is a hit so it don't matter does it really, She was known for her first hit 'More than you Know' in 1988 and then her hit album Martika....So she is well remembered for all songs she did to be fair
Yea its incorrect, if you go to her Wikipedia which may or may not be correct it doesn't say she is deceased. The information you received did it list cause of death?
1:39 And let's not forget the fact that Martika's "Toy Soldiers" held off no less than Madonna's iconic "Express Yourself" from hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100!
I miss when VH1 aired music videos and music related programming (Pop Up Video, Behind the Music, this show, memories)

So beautiful
Martika has a amazing voice I think.
Wow she seems like a real person we need more of that to go around😮
This chica was badass. i have her Toy Soldiers album on tape. Love "Like Water"!
Water is certainly her best non-hit. Good taste!
+CrestoneMountains That was a brief hit.
@@CrestoneMountains i agree with you. Water is awesome!!
Agreed. Water gives a good indication of her potential with Latin pop rhythms and a glimpse of the kind of star she could have been in the 1990s when Latin music became a craze.
i dont understand why martika didnt become a huge star like madonna, britney spears, and the fact that martika is very talented
She burned out. She had all the talent those women had just wasn't for her. After doing it for years as a kid star then hitting the top of the charts and touring it played a toll on her. much more talented than Britney Spears. That's for sure

Martika walk away from fame and it got be too much for her. I'm glad she least told her why she left it. I love her music
Martika has aged heaps toy sodiers is a very sad song. Because its about having a drug addiction. Its a very influential song.
Had no idea that Martika sang "Toy Soldiers".. Just found out that Stacy is thee Fergie now. My mind has been blown too many times tonight.
She had a few big hits back to back in one to two years and then suddenly started complaining she was tired and it's happening too fast. Didn't eminem sampled her song, "Toy Soldiers". She probably got a mint off that.
and most people burn out when they chase the fame only so she got off the roller coaster she was smart enough ot see it wasn't her thing
April Gosa agree, I hate that people called them hasbeens when so many people that want to be in the industry and make classics hits hasn't even done it and she done it and wrote and produced her own material. I feel you that she saw what the industry was about and didn't want to chase fame but want to be an artist.
you can only be that big for so long it can drive you crazy fame can hurt people
EXACTLY! Sure take a break to unwind and refresh. But you don't get off that train altogether. the music scene changes so fast. What's hip one day is passe the next.
Yup She does look like Jennifer Beals!
My first latina crush when it comes to music celebrities.
Martika was everything in the late 80's/early 90's. Such a shame she burnt out. She's been promising a comeback(s) since 1998 and it's never materialized ☹️

she is talented hope the best for her !
Martika te amo mi Vida 😍
She had a recurring role on Wiseguy as well.
Wow. I actually give her some credit. She didn't let that fame get to her head. Hoping she is still around now. I would love a Kids Incorporated reunion. That would be awesome. I watched that show all the time as a child. I guess that's how I started to really love music.
She's still around...TRUST ME...
+Clayton Jaros are you her son?
No I'm not...
+Clayton Jaros you look like you could be related
That would be awesome if I was. Haha!
OMG!!!!!! ....THAT WAS MARTIKA ON SILVER SPOONS!!!!?? I REMEMBER SEEING THAT EPISODE TOO LOL!!!! wow.....who knew???
I just saw the 'pop up video' of her toy soldiers vid. They were so shady with the Madonna jokes lol
"Martika learned to go with the flow"
Kinda ironic, because Martika had released a song in 2012 titled "Flow with the go"
You speak the truth. The only song I heard from her was "Toy Soldier", and that disappeared quick. Most of her fame in my little group came from being on Kids Inc. As for annoying, she was nowhere near as bad as Stacy Ferguson was on that show.

Who the hell records tv in vertical?
@ShepAussie, Hi. Hey, I read that Martika did not quit the music scene, actually after she became clean from fighting a terrible substance addiction, she started a band named Oppera. It is amazing what drugs and such, can do to a person and how the lucky few, make it to the top again after their fall...Love Martika!!!!!!
Wrong!
Martika is making a comeback, new single 'Flow With The Go' out now!
VH1 made a mistake Silver Spoons lasted from 1982-1987
+James Greek Good call! And that's what I thought because she sure looked like a kid in Silver Spoons.
I LOVED KIDS INC!!!!
@7mandoblu Also it's funny how the voice over said that Martika learned how to go with the flow. The title of her new single is called "Flow With the Go", her first new song in 20 years.
Well now it's official, Martika is back and she's gonna be putting out a new album in 2011.
now 2021,she still no release the album
Have you got the whole episode of this?
I use to have a crush on her when she was on kids inc. I use to watch it every Saturday lol. I miss the 80s smh. That was the good ol days they don't make music like that anymore! She's still sexy ,it's good to see that she's still got it and isn't strung out or dead.
Gorgeous.
My teenage crush!
Im so glad to hear she's well taken care of.

-Mandii Lea
Comes to show that you don't have to be a Madonna superstar to be happy.
my lovely Martika
I am looking for "The Journey" by Martika does anybody have it?:)
I hate to be the Debbie Downer, but they act like she was some HUGE GIGANTIC pop star of the 80's/early 90's. I agree. Kinda do but idk something about her is throwing me off.
What a cute cute girl she was in KI though.
And kinda sorta like Salma Hayek :)
Where are they now "Where are they now?" ?
+Yanick Norman .........Where are they now "Where are they now is now on youtube.
She seems a bit similar to Jennifer Beals
Her head is a weird shape
@Carnalite118 The Journey, unnreleased. Her new song will be ready this thursday!!!
Love this song
her debut was released in 1988 not 1989
when someone claims that they have never had low points and that everything is perfect, you know there is some serious issues going on, Gee, i wonder they could be?
she wrote the song about a friend
She's a strange chick.
why's the picture all weird & vertically stretched out? :(
I always wonder what happened to her love that song toys soldier
i love u martika =)
Go girl!!!
I love how they don't even do their research and start out with "Born MARTIKA Marrero..." When she was in fact born MARTA Marrero. I mean come on...if you're going to do a "Where are they now" get your facts straight.
im not sure whether i like her or not
She looks crazy
US CUBANS STCK TOGETHER GO MARTIKA
Anyone know why she walked off stage in 1992 and I guess quit the business?
She'll never recapture what she had music wise.
+SergioMartelli you hit the nail right on the head sir. It seems everyone else can see it but her.
A 2 hit wonder, you mean.
ELLA ES Y SERA ETERNA EN NUESTRA ALMA ❤️ MARTIKA TE AMO MI AMORCITO MÍO ❤️😘👑👠🙏🙏🙏ERES EL ÁNGEL HERMOSO QUE AYUDA ESPIRITUALMENTE
She was born "marta morerro" not "martika morerro." Really VH1??
@guata3 - you need to add yt:stretch tags to fix the aspect ratio. Google "youtube aspect ratio tags".
Show business BS. It ruined so many lives. At least one person escaped.
Gwen Stefani
So what happened to Kim Carnes? :p
@Carnalite118 "Bette Davis eyes" by Kim Carnes
martika mi cubanita bella
What is that guy talking about he even said- More than you know was a hit so that was the song that made her a name in 1988- before Toy Soldiers
More than you know was her first hit, but nowhere near as big as toy soldiers, which is what most people remember her by.
jdessell A hit is a hit so it don't matter does it really, She was known for her first hit 'More than you Know' in 1988 and then her hit album Martika....So she is well remembered for all songs she did to be fair
I only knew about Toy Soldiers honestly I thought it came first LOL
April Gosa That is the only song you know by her lol
Where you from?
America I was born in 1985 I remember from when I was little

@elmando5 WOW you are so right! I totally see JB

@Carnalite118 Bette Davis Eyes, by Kim Carnes
I think more like Demi Moore in ghost
too bad it sucks and she isn't the same.
she's still a hottie
Yeah, I can name the artist.
Sad to look at
@DigitalSoda And she's only 42!
Yea, they were both pretty bad, but since Martika was older, I just blamed Ferguson's bad acting on being a kid.
Was toy soldiers about martika using drugs did she have an additional. I am surprised that shes still alive.
Nicole Yung She is deceased now.
stickman4u She is not dead.
stickman4u That might be a shock to her, since she's doing a show tonight in Seattle.
Rick Dorsey Maybe its a hologram! LOL
+Nicole Yung she said it was about her friend. She's on twitter now you should follow her. she actually responds back
Sade
short hair girls in the 80s and 90s gave the best bjs.
Aspect ratio fail.
Her real name is Marta not Martika.
Surely you've heard of artists performing under _stage names?_
SHE WAS 15 WHEN SHE WAS ON KIDS INC? SHE LOOKED 30.
Shit aspect ratio.
She passed away....
stickman4u No she didn't! Stop starting lies dumbass!
Hey Robin.
Robin Light
Hey Robin I received an update of celebs that passed away. She was on it. Perhaps it was incorrect. If so, Great. As to your comment to
Yea its incorrect, if you go to her Wikipedia which may or may not be correct it doesn't say she is deceased. The information you received did it list cause of death?
stickman4u She is on Twitter and its a verified account she just recently tweeted.
