😅 dude, I flinched and tried to catch your bike when you removed the second spark plug 😂 Cool video 🙌🏻! I liked how you kept it all real, and totally empathized with you when struggling to remove certain parts! Thanks for uploading this!
I have a 2016 Scout 60 and your videos have been very inspirational and helpful. Your confidence level scares me because you tear down a first model year new motorcycle like a Desktop computer upgrade :) I changed the plugs on mine yesterday and it took me half a day ! Happy New Year to you !
Probably a good idea to put a rag over the throttle body to prevent those tiny coil on plug bolts falling into it. Also a set of front and rear stands does wonders for stability. Still have to support the middle when removing the top frame.
damn nice save! and BTW for all those guys saying that this is some crazy design and that is so hard to change spark plugs, well that's nothing compared to changing spark plugs on a supersport... these are motorcycles not cars it has to be in some packed way.
Thanks for the information mate, by gee it’s a somewhat difficult job..........did get a bit of a giggle when you nearly dropped the bike but again you handled that with aplomb 🤣
Why is it necessary to remove the left-side frame rail? I know you can get the air box out with only removing the right side; so I'm guessing it's because of the coil packs & spark plugs? Thanks for all these videos, really helps me plan for a project.
Indian Scout shop told me it cost two hour labor at $160 an hour spark plugs are about $20 or so crazy but how long does it take you to do that then is that two hour job as well ???
This fellow gives very good instructions but I want to caution you. You have to be very, very gentle and careful with the fuel line from the tank. I pushed it and twisted it and the plastic elbow joint on the tank end broke. So, read the manual about tank removal and replacement. Be gentle and don't twist the fuel line. Otherwise, it is a $60 replacement. And, it is a LOT easier if the tank is empty or close to it. Good luck.
I appreciate the help provided by this amazing video! So as I was removing the coils I forgot which coil belongs to which spark plug hole, and I think it matters which one goes to which hole right? If yes then how can I know which goes to which?
What was the stock gap on the replacements? Did you have to adjust? I just replaced mine and dropped em in... forgot to check gap. Usually things are pregapped if bought for a specific engine, and everything seems good on mine. But still... I'm curious
When you put the frame rails back on, is there some balancing/alignment that needs to be done when tightening the rail fasteners? Wouldn't want to develop some weird pull/vibration/whatever due to a potential alignment issue. Thanks!
Thanks for the quick response! I'm happy it's a tight fit, no need to be concerned about frame issues. My friend's BMW develops a weird wobble at higher speeds and it turned out to be a frame alignment issue, so I'm being cautious. Thanks again!
Bri Guy According to the factory service manual, every 30k miles. Which is a fairly long time as far as motorcycles go, but that kind of plug should be regapped every 10-12k, so about every oil change on this bike, you need to have them out to look at them.
Unalocker, I’m getting a paint job and while the tank’s off I’ll install the iridium plugs. Question- what is the gap? Does it need changing as most plugs don’t come pre-gapped. Good work on the videos
Nah, you can’t gap them. The iridium is too brittle to even check the gap. They have a protective cardboard sleeve over the end of the plug to maintain the factory set gap during shipping.
unaclocker Good, just bought one today. Intake arrives tomorrow. I have an octane but a lot of your videos apply to my bike as well. Keep up the good work.
Mark Wright it’s running great. I did the Arlen Ness intake at the same time and the performance increase, even with the stock exhaust, was impressive.
That's great! I note you don't need to ( and should not ) change the gap on those Iridium plugs. I am thinking of getting it done at an Indian dealer depending on the cost they quote. I'd do it myself but it is diabolically snowy weather here in Canada and my shed only just fits the bikes. Plus I need a new back tire so I figure the dealer is my best option.....depending on the quote....if they ever give me one......cheers mate! Aussie Mark.
Great, I look forward to it for sure. Btw I just spoke to my friendly Indian Dealer and they told me that what you did would take them between 2-4 hours labor at $85 CAD per hour.....so that certainly makes me think about doing it myself. One question - can you get at the rear spark plug by just taking off the tank (without "breaking" the frame)?
I see that something so simple Indian made difficult. I love the scout but that would bother me. and I am sure that the shop would charge shitloads for the plug change.
I'm trying to find out what one dealer will charge right now...I will post it when I know. I may end up doing it myself although I'm not keen. After coming from an old Evo HD this seems like a lot of work for what should be basic maintenance!
I’ve been riding and tooling for over 40 years on my own bikes and I have never seen anything sooooo ridiculous of a design just to change two spark plugs. I don’t know if I’m getting old or what, but I couldn’t see myself going through this just for two spark plugs. Unbelievable…
Eh, once you get the retro copper plugs out of there, you never have to go back. And if you swap out the factory airbox you never have to crack the frame to change them again.
Here I am looking forward to buying a scout sixty and it's design is horrible just to GET TO THE DAMN PLUGS, my GOSH! What the HELL. Hey dude, get a cordless drill and don't waste your muscles. Nice job.
Much like many modern cars, it’s all designed in CAD now. Not being built in the real world anymore, the computer guy is just like “sure you can get at that part, here’s how” and feels like he’s done an excellent job. 🤷♂️
James Rylance Factory gapped. Checking the gap can shatter the Iridium electrode. Specifically says not to do that. I should have noted that in the video. Thanks.
James Rylance I believe those were NGK plugs, which come pregapped, if your not running any crazy fuel modifications there really isn’t a need to adjust the gap
Hmmm. What exactly did you not like about my hand use? I worked in a precision bearing factory back when I did this video. Made bearings for robotics for a decade. Now I’m doing electrical engineering on light rail vehicles. I do admit, I’m in my late 40’s and my knuckles are starting to ache at times. I’m looking forward to retiring. Heh.
😅 dude, I flinched and tried to catch your bike when you removed the second spark plug 😂

I’m loving all these Indian maintenance videos!

Man I can't lie, I saw that thing tip and almost filled my shorts.... good video!
18:55 - I suggest you skip ahead so that you don't get caught off guard. MotoCycle ! you should have warned us !
Thanks for the video! Man thats alot of work for just the front spark plug... gotta look into a aftermarket intake.
Changed my 2017 victory octane at 20k mileage with CR9EIX and was a great improvement now starts with half crank.
Probably a good idea to put a rag over the throttle body to prevent those tiny coil on plug bolts falling into it.

Wayne Ladgrove haha, no doubt. I went and got a proper bike hack after this. Made the later mods much easier.
Why is it necessary to remove the left-side frame rail? I know you can get the air box out with only removing the right side; so I'm guessing it's because of the coil packs & spark plugs? Thanks for all these videos, really helps me plan for a project.

What happens if you don't use the jack and remove the filter and spark plugs, will the engine fall and could damage something?
The bike will fold up like a pair of scissors. Those two top bars that you remove are a structural part of the bike.

ejestin I just want to second what you said. I did the same thing plastidipping my tank. Can’t caution people enough about taking off the fuel line
CR9EIX on a 2021 bobber?
Thank you, I really appreciate your endeavors!
Good call on the iradum plugs...dont wanna do that twice.
I put these in mine when I put the Trask high flow air filter in, two birds with one stone
Scary to watch, but you got it done
I know this is late AF but how do you feel the new plugs helped performance?
They just last forever, but I also made a major intake change at the same time, so it’s impossible to say.
I appreciate the help provided by this amazing video!
So as I was removing the coils I forgot which coil belongs to which spark plug hole, and I think it matters which one goes to which hole right? If yes then how can I know which goes to which?
Nope. Doesn’t matter.
Did you gap the new plugs? If not just do it again.
Iridium plugs don’t get gapped. They’re factory set and gapping them can snap off the iridium tip.
What was the stock gap on the replacements? Did you have to adjust? I just replaced mine and dropped em in... forgot to check gap. Usually things are pregapped if bought for a specific engine, and everything seems good on mine. But still... I'm curious
You don’t change the gap on iridiums.
@@1ManWrenching I used the stock replacements, not iridium
Ahhh, I’ve never done that. No idea what the gap should be.
When you put the frame rails back on, is there some balancing/alignment that needs to be done when tightening the rail fasteners? Wouldn't want to develop some weird pull/vibration/whatever due to a potential alignment issue. Thanks!
hillie47 Nope, no adjustment possible.
Thanks for the quick response! I'm happy it's a tight fit, no need to be concerned about frame issues. My friend's BMW develops a weird wobble at higher speeds and it turned out to be a frame alignment issue, so I'm being cautious. Thanks again!
So I'm guessing a change out of the O2 sensors would require the same disassembly steps?
Not at all. I have a video where I replace an O2 sensor. It’s readily accessible.
Wow- I watched it. Just what the doctor ordered- THANKS!
I don't know if I missed that how often do you have to change the spark plugs how many miles
Bri Guy According to the factory service manual, every 30k miles. Which is a fairly long time as far as motorcycles go, but that kind of plug should be regapped every 10-12k, so about every oil change on this bike, you need to have them out to look at them.

Nah, you can’t gap them. The iridium is too brittle to even check the gap. They have a protective cardboard sleeve over the end of the plug to maintain the factory set gap during shipping.
Would a motorcycle jack work or does it need to be a regular floor jack?
Shooty McShootface motorcycle jack would be way better. I just hadn’t bought one yet.
unaclocker Good, just bought one today. Intake arrives tomorrow. I have an octane but a lot of your videos apply to my bike as well. Keep up the good work.
do you have to hook the bike to a computer for a retune after you change the filter or plugs?
bjorn villaester Nope
unaclocker thanks for the reply and cool video. i guess im doing my own maintenance on my bike since its expensive as hell taking it to the dealer
I noticed you didn't check the gap/gap the plugs before inserting.
Yeah, you don’t do that with iridium plugs.
NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug 3521 - CR9EIX THIS THE PLUG I NEED
Also to note with NGK is not to use antisieze because it can cause issues. I know you didn't but some people are use to using it when changing plugs.
What issues
cant find a decent flashlight?
James Thomas exactly. They’re never there when you need them.
Unalocker, can I ask how the Scout runs since you used the iridium plugs?
Mark Wright it’s running great. I did the Arlen Ness intake at the same time and the performance increase, even with the stock exhaust, was impressive.

Mark Wright Yeah, no gapping change needed. I’m about to do a video changing my tires, around the end of this month. 😊
Great, I look forward to it for sure. Btw I just spoke to my friendly Indian Dealer and they told me that what you did would take them between 2-4 hours labor at $85 CAD per hour.....so that certainly makes me think about doing it myself. Mark Wright Yes. It’s the front plug that’s deep in there.
I’m picking mine up next Friday , didn’t know what a pain this was ganna be , take the gas take up to change the spark plugs or air filter 🤨🤨
Wait... you go to a dealer for spark plugs?????
I’ve been riding and tooling for over 40 years on my own bikes and I have never seen anything sooooo ridiculous of a design just to change two spark plugs. I don’t know if I’m getting old or what, but I couldn’t see myself going through this just for two spark plugs. Unbelievable…

And here I thought changing the spark plugs on my Aprilia was bad oyvea and what is an coil pack nice bike btw
Holy shit. 18:54
I love my Scout but wtf was Polaris thinking with the plugs and air filter? What a PIA. Ridiculous.
Much like many modern cars, it’s all designed in CAD now. Not being built in the real world anymore, the computer guy is just like “sure you can get at that part, here’s how” and feels like he’s done an excellent job. 🤷♂️
I'll never complain about changing air filter or plugs again on my sportster rotflmao.
Con ese sistema tan complicado para cambiar una bujia ,no se haran muy populares,a todo motero le gusta hacer el minimo mantenimiento de su moto
You did well man but your bike nearly opened up like book.
why don't you use jack stands
all that work, you should have checked to see if the gap was correct
James Rylance Factory gapped. Checking the gap can shatter the Iridium electrode. Specifically says not to do that. I should have noted that in the video. Thanks.
James Rylance I believe those were NGK plugs, which come pregapped, if your not running any crazy fuel modifications there really isn’t a need to adjust the gap
Indian is American made and uses those accused foreign style Metric fasteners crazy.
This is why they get 450.00 to do it.dammm
All that to change a spark plug 🤨
Can tell he dont do this for a living. If you treat your hands like he does you wont do it long
Hmmm. What exactly did you not like about my hand use? I worked in a precision bearing factory back when I did this video. Made bearings for robotics for a decade. Thanks for skipping the hardest fucking part....
you need to buy some electric tools...
Eh, I’m not doing this for a living, I like the feedback I get from manual tools.
the motorcycle was created for a person to suffer!
