Fortunato Paolo = lucky Paolo. Was part of a childrens bracelet. He was captured during the british operation crusader and later shipped to the UK with hundreds of italian POW's. Will ask the Italian Red Cross for further details
I think he was captured at Sidi Omar as the operation Crusader fought Italians and was over by December 7. 1941 so the date of 1.12.41 is likely the day he was taken POW. As for the ALEX….could it relate to Alexandria as it was a large British Naval base and he may have been shipped out from there? Hopefully someone can access records that may verify these facts.
Loved the story of Fred and Millie. Dave is a good man to take care of their graves. We need a feel good story right now. Love and honor to all our veterans. Coping here in the USA.
Also coping in USA! Thanks Nicola for your lovely video honoring veterans. The only vets in my family are vets from England and Canada. You honored them well!
What a wonderfully heartfelt video - thank you so much Nicola. I can’t help with the little silver plaque, but my lovely Mum was a St. John VAD nurse at the internment camp in Port Erin, on the Isle of Man. She later went down to London, and was shelter nursing in the centre of the city. She used to say that as long as she had her tin hat, she felt safe, despite the blitz going on around her. My Dad was seventeen years older than Mum, and served in WW1 on the Somme. He never spoke of his experiences, but as the years passed, the Remembrance Day service became more and more poignant, and he would become quite distressed. Thankfully they both lived long, fruitful lives, and I’m proud to be their daughter.
I found a similar luggage tag in my yard this past summer. Gentleman's initials and last name. I was able to look him up and find out about his life. Thanks to a local UA-camr I was put in touch with a great great nephew and sent the tag to him. Detecting is a great hobby.
What an amazing video Nicola, thank you so much for the shoutout and all the information you’ve found out about Fortunato Paolo!! Myself and my Dad have recently got on the brand new farm up the road from where we went a few weeks ago and it is awesome!! Hopefully see you soon!! Kind regards, Paddy
Postie here. That round numbered tag looks like what we use on post box keys each key is numbered with them even the numbers are very similar. Longshot but if it was then the postbox might still be nearby. Royal Mail have a postbox finder on it’s website where you can find nearby postboxes you can find the numbers there too if you click to view the fullpage info or ask a postie. Nice finds btw
Very touching video. My Grandfather was in the 2nd world War in England. He was from Canada. He was over there 5 years and missed the early years of his 3 daughters lives. It is nice to remember all they did for us❤ thankyou
With all my best wishes on this Remembrance Day in the UK and tomorrow's Veteran's Day in the US, thank you, Nicola, for all that you do to bring these stories to life. Your story about Frederick and Milly brought me to tears, and a big shout out to Dave for his kind gestures. Lovely video, as ever.
Sidi Omar lies between Egypt and Libya and was the location of an Italian fort named Fort Capuzzo. This was captured by the British on 29th November 1941, just two days before the date on the tag.
You are so good at what you do, Nicola! The rose for Milly "from" her husband was such a touching gesture. Sending lots of love back to you from the continent!
Thank you so much for this video Nicola! We are approaching “Veteran’s Day” here in the USA, which is tomorrow, Nov. 11, 2024. Many Americans have family members who are buried in France and other places outside of the USA who gave their all during WWII. Seeing artifacts that you are finding pertaining to soldiers affords us with wonderful glimpses of that time in history, and other times, too! Thank you so much for taking us with you on these great adventures in time that allow us to “meet” other real people of other eras. You are our favorite UA-cam Mudlarker, historian, and artist! We always look forward to your videos! (I especially like to see the Thames wildlife, too!) Sending all happy wishes from America to our British cousins across the Atlantic Ocean! And remember, as we do, to look up once in a while! You never know when we might spot the TARDIS!
If you want to trace that tag you should get ahold of the French history professor who runs a UA-cam channel called "crocodile tear". He is the master of taking artifacts and tracing them to the modern-day family. He openly publishes his email in every video stating if you need help tracing an artifact to email him. UA-cam won't let me post email addresses or links to his channel but using the channel name I gave you you should be able to find it. His videos on tracing world war II artifacts are amazing.
Dave- thank you for your compassion & care for taking care of the graves previously unseen for Fred & Millie. People around the world are watching this and appreciate 😊 Nicola thank you for this special video for remembrance Day. It’s so important for us to learn about the past but to bring personal touch to what you find this makes it all so special. Keep being you. 🩷
Those must be the grounds of the Royal Herbert Hospital! Opened in 1865 to treat Crimean War veterans, it remained a military hospital until it closed in 1977. I used to work at the Victoria Day Centre, just across the road; it was previously the RAMC officers mess for the Royal Herbert. Florence Nightingale was a consultant for the design of the hospital, which incorporated her ideas on providing a healthy, well-lit and well-ventilated environment for the patients.
My grandfather was born in 1899 in Italy so I assume it was WW2 that he fought in but he would never talk about it because he was too embarrassed! That artefact brought back a lot of lovely memories of him. So thank you Nicola and Paddy 😊
It is so heartwarming to hear the affection in your voice when you speak about Fred and Millie Jury. You seem to genuinely have warm feelings for the couple. So good to know they have not been forgotten given they had no children. Kind of like you've adopted them.
Dave is a magnificent man. Fred and Sarah’s story is so lovely Nicola, thank you. The military stick is incredible, such an honour to be given one. The military history is so important. Thank you for all you do supporting these amazing, courageous people that fought for our freedom.
Wow. Such great finds .and I so hope the pow s family can be found. Kudos to the young man for being so pro active and sincere. Thank you both. And as always be safe. Cold here in Oregon so keep well.
You are a treasure, Nicola. Your warmth and love fly across the ocean and make it a little warmer here in Alberta as we head into the long, dark winter.
What a wonderful story on Remembrance Sunday. Being a Bermondsey boy, I have driven passed Fred and Millie's house more times than I could ever remember. RIP Fred and Millie. ❤ Thank you for that Nicola. ❤
Thank you for bringing these Veterans back to life by telling their stories. My husband has a metal bracelet he wore as a child engraved with the name of a Vietnam War POW. We've tried to find his family to give it to them, but have had no success. U inspire me to keep searching. Tomorrow I'll be remembering all of my American ancestors who fought in so many wars, the American Revolutionary War of 1775-1783, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War of 1898, WW I, WW II and the Korean War of 1950-1953. My great-grandaunt was in nurse in France during WW I. My grand-aunt served in the Waves as an Aviation Machinist Mate, Second Class, during WW II.
I still have the Vietnam War POW-MIA metal bracelet that I sent away for as a teenager and wore for many years without fail. Long after the war, and I can't remember how long, I finally received a letter that my POW had been identified as officially having died in a camp. After a while I reluctantly took off the bracelet, but my concern for the plight of veterans has never wavered. I'm a lifelong leftie, and very concerned about what is to become of our allies with the abhorrent choice that's been made here in the USA. I thank Nicola for bringing it home today.
His utter scorn for the military means money for the VA etc. will most likely be drastically cut in 2025. He's an Isolationist & he will once again offend all our allies except for his beloved fellow dictators in Russia & N. Korea. My family who fought to preserve our Democracy would be appalled at how blindly Americans have thrown it away.
Absolutely fantastic video yet again Nicola. So very touching, made me cry again but in a good way !! Its so amazing that you still visit Freds grave and that Millie now has her own cross nearby.very emotional.Awesome cap badge, stunning find that 🥰❤️
Nicola, what a wonderful way to commemorate Fred and Millie - I love that you have honored everyday people who would otherwise be forgotten. And I hope you find out something on Fortunato!
It’s always great to find a new video from Nicola. Remembrance Day is on November 11th in Canada and I have many relatives who fought in both wars. My father was a Spitfire pilot and often played trumpet in clubs in London. He’s not with us anymore but I do remember his recollections. Thank you Nicola.
Wonderful video Nicola. I love the fact that the cemetery caretakers found Fred's wife's grave and added a marker, that is very sweet. Great finds and history of the badge. I hope you find more info on Paolo Fortunato. Have a super week.
Loved the military parade stick. Paul is a true craftsman. You owning something like the Queen… wow! Loved your tribute to the veterans. My son served in the Afghanistan War & also suffers from PTSD. I was very touched as well by the Jury’s story Loved that you connect your finds to find out about the history of behind the find.

They will always be remembered and never forgotten. 🙂 Dave & team thank you for going out of your way to put up a cross and plague for Sarah (Millie) and looking after Fred's gravesite too.🙂nz*
How wonderful that you were able to find Fred and Sarah's grave. It is touching that the cross was made for Sarah and brambles removed from Fred's grave. Everyone deserves that service. Maybe you and your friends could get a volunteer group to help with that project.
Nicola, you are an amazing person. It's enjoyable to watch you find treasures in the mud and then research them to find out more. This video was exceptional because it reminded me of those lost in wars. My younger brother fought in Vietnam and gave his life. there in 1969. His body was never recovered. What you do to educate others is wonderful. Thank you. My family came from London to the US in the late 18th century. Bless you and what you do.
What beautiful stories. It was so kind of you to take that rose to Millie Jury in the name of her husband. Paddy is such a bright young man, so wonderful to see that the mudlarking craft will continue on. Nicola, you aways introduce us to the most interning and kind people, I thank you for that. 🌻🍁🇺🇸
Someone's POW bracelet. America did that. We had bracelets with all the POWs names on it. We wore then with hope they would return safely. So basically it might be a bracelet of hope. It help keep the soldiers memories alive. Some were silver but most were stainless. The date was the day they went missing.
@@imawehole I had a similar bracelets in early 70's, with the name & date of an MIA soldier in Vietnam. Too young to vote (U.S.), it was a way to be heard. Those bracelets were also politically charged - we were forced to take them off in certain situations, by the 'establishment' :)
You do great work Nicola, remembering them so they are not forgotten. RIP Fred and Millie ❤❤❤ And sending you lots of love and blessings 🙏 xx Teresa 🇦🇺♥
Hi Nicola A wonderful story. You are so kind to remember & honor them. I enjoy watching your adventures & have learned so much from you. Thank you ❤ Best Wishes from Branford Connecticut.
Lovely video, Nicola. So much history found by you and that amazing tag found by Paddy. I hope you all find the correct person and are able to return it to family. I also believe that it is a remembrance bracelet, wrote by family to keep their loved one in mind. That would explain why it's made of silver. I hope you re-find the Royal Military School badge. It's really beautiful. Till next time.
Hello Nicola, this was a wonderful historical moment for Fortunato Paulo . Although, he was a POW captured and returned from Britain to the UK. His story is fascinating , I see a few people already researched him. I hope you find more information on him. Have a wonderful week ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜
Thank you for this wonderful video Nicola! As an aviation artist I was very lucky to meet a few WW2 pilots all of whom have since passed away. It is vitality important to never forget those who faught valiantly in both wars. The winds of war are begining to blow and I sincerely hope we are not destined to repeat the terrible things that happened in the past which resulted in such a great loss of life.
So sorry you were unwell, Nicola. I've just been through a terrible wildfire here and have been without electricity for five days, Fortunately, our house was spared, but many others were not. All of this on top of the very distressing results of our presidential election. So i pray you are well now and I pray our electricity is restored soon - and most of all I pray that The USA survives the next four years. Seeing you weekly and receiving your good wishes and love from London buoys my spirits! Sending you love and gratitude. Please be well.
Thank you for putting a rose on her grave. Very touching. Thanks to both of then for their sacrifice in the war. I hope they know we appreciate what they gave us.
Wonderful episode, very touching 🙏 I just wanted to mention something about the ring… It looks very much like a ring that was given to me back in my teenage years. Very similar workmanship. It had been made by a German prisoner of war, out of a silver spoon,. Each day he would be brought out of the pow camp to work on farms. He used to come to my grandmothers to help. And the ring had been made for grannies next door neighbour. When she died it was given to me, as the ring had my initials on it. I wore it always until it wore through and I had intended to get it repaired but haven’t yet….. you have inspired me to dig it out and find a jeweller ❤❤❤
Suggest Sidi Omar, Alexandria, Dec. 1, 1941 indicates that Paolo was captured at Sidi Omar during the British confrontation with Rommel’s German and Italian forces. His life after his presence in Britain remains a mystery. As another person mentioned, perhaps the International Red Cross might have some helpful WWII Italian pow information. Your research on your finds opens up a fascinating world of the past; thank you for sharing the information with us.
Thank you for another great video Nicola. Loving your fantastic garden. Some really interesting finds as usual. Thanks again. Much love to you as always xxxx
I would like to thank Dave and his colleges, along with so many others here, we are grateful for his professionalism and his determination with solving this mystery for us, and bringing Fred and Milly together, allowing us to remember and honor them. Fred's service to his country deserves to be remembered, and thanks to folks like Dave, we can honor him and his wife. Nicola, you are a special person to help make his happen, you are the force behind it, thank you. As a military veteran myself, it does my heart good to know that there are young people who are willing to make the effort.
You are so wonderful for your remembrance of all those lost in war. In our uncertain times, especially here in the US, we need to look to the past for lessons for the future.
He could have been like my great grandfather who immigrated to Canada and then joined the military to fight in WWI and landed up back in Europe. Many people felt honour bound to fight even though they no longer lived there and volunteered very early in the war. This is a beautiful video Nic. Thank you to all the lovely people you met!
Such an awesome video, Nicola. And such awesome comments from your wonderful viewers. I do hope this leads us to returning the silver tag to Paolo’s relatives. Super excited to see how this ends.
I love your videos and have been following you since your early days but i have to admit I love the foreshore videos the best. I still love these metal detecting ones but not quite so much lol! But this is a special one, your kindness and empathy shines through. Thank you Nichola ❤
Hi Nicola, I hope you are well and keeping lucky. Fortunato may have family still living where his Mum & Dad had their business. Might be worthwhile to see if there is any Paolo's in that area still? Lovely that you visited Fred and his wife. It is hard to think of all those people who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice and I also think of all the civilians that got caught up in it all with the bombings, etc. A special thought for them too. We will remember them.
Special thanks to Dave who continues to do a job above and beyond what is necessary. It’s nice to have a connection to the mapping of the grave site, otherwise you would’ve never found any of the hidden information. Also what a wonderful honor to have received that beautiful stick. Is it a walking stick? Or simply a decorative piece either way there was a lot of thought that he put into your special prized piece. Thanks as usual Nicola for providing us historical background on numerous finds. Thx as always & be well Nikki.
Nicola, You are the loveliest of souls. Thank you for sharing your adventures. It is great fun and heartwarming. I kept looking for Mackenzie and Toby as you were detecting (har har). Just adore you! Thanks again. Sally in Northern California 😁
A brilliant video Nicola. Very interesting about Paolo indeed. Hmm! not to sure on the all action squirting recycled vibrio tooth brush thingy...A nice little Draper brass bristle brush for me, still everyone to there own!😉. Anyway take care and love from Norfolk xx PS Blimey what a garden you have!
wonderful Nicola, your work in bringing the story of mr and mrs Jury to our lives is heartwarming and restores may faith in the fact that there are many many good people around, and a big shout for Dave too,top man.👍✌
Always a real treat to view one of your videos and how wonderful of you to give such a nice tribute to those that have fought in wars throughout the years.
These fine seem to continue to tell their stories through time and place,,,,,,they have done well by choosing you to be their story teller. Well cone Nic Thank you for the smiles and the tears for my remembrances for those who gave their lives so We can live in a country that is free.
Wonderful military memorabilia, an awesome way to celebrate Remembrance Day, Nic! I saw when the tag from Paddy's friend was found. I hope you can find some more information about it!❤
That was so lovely thank you nicola and all who helped in the research and for dave cleaning the grave its a beautiful thing when people come together like that ❤ bless you all
Thank you so much for this lovely video. I was fortunate enough to have a permit and did some mudlarking in 2019. Found a pipe stem with the name Vining on it. Looked it up and was able to locate the pipe maker. Back in the states, I have a friend with that same last name and was able to give her the pipe stem along with the information about the Vining family. Probably no relation, but she was delighted to have the pipestem!

I also believe that it is a remembrance bracelet, wrote by family to keep their loved one in mind. That would explain why it's made of silver. I hope you re-find the Royal Military School badge. It's really beautiful. Till next time.
Absolutely beautiful Nicola, so thoughtful, our Remembrance day is the 11th here, thank you for sharing. 🍁✨️🙏
The story of Fred and Sarah is very touching.
Ok I didn’t cry…beautiful episode Nicola! I pray that we will have no more wars…and yes we should never forget those that served ♥️
Really enjoyed watching the beautiful video.
Thank you very much for the lovely information ❤
With love from SAM
Guwahati, Assam, India 🇮🇳 ♥️
That was and is very sweet of Paddy to do all of that what a wonderful kibd heart he has. The world needs more people like Paddy in it. 😊😊❤❤
What a wonderfully thoughtful gift from Paul.
Beautiful treasures right at home Nicola .. love it !! PAOLO ... great find from a budding mudlarker xx
Nicola, you’re such a kind and caring human being. Thank you for these videos. Tomorrow is Veterans Day here in the USA. God bless ❤
Thank you for putting a rose on her grave. Very touching. Thanks to both of then for their sacrifice in the war. I hope they know we appreciate what they gave us.
Wonderful episode, very touching 🙏
I just wanted to mention something about the ring…
It looks very much like a ring that was given to me back in my teenage years.
That was so very kind of you to remember Mr. Jury and his wife. Thank you.
Suggest Sidi Omar, Alexandria, Dec. 1, 1941 indicates that Paolo was captured at Sidi Omar during the British confrontation with
Rommel’s German and Italian forces. His life after his presence in Britain remains a mystery. As another person mentioned,
perhaps the International Red Cross might have some helpful WWII Italian pow information. Your research on your finds opens
up a fascinating world of the past; thank you for sharing the information with us.
It crosses my mind that your squirrel will think you might be burying nuts to see you through the winter!
Too funny!❤😂
Thank you for this video. Thank Dave for us for caring for these graves.
You are so wonderful for your remembrance of all those lost in war. In our uncertain times, especially here in the US, we need to look to the past for lessons for the future.
I’ve always wondered if you and Simon have thoroughly detected your own gardens….. what fun!
Thank you for this awesome video. It was very interesting. Hopefully you can find Mr Paolos family. Have a great week, Nicola ❤
It’s nice to have a connection to the mapping of the grave
site, otherwise you would’ve never found any of the hidden information.

Thank you Nicola for a very interesting video trying to help paddy trace that tag
Thank you Dave. God bless you.
Thank you nicola. What a lovely touching episode. Tfs❤
