Have been riding the sport touring category for 43 years. Whether you’re riding locally or on a long trip, it’s so much better if you don’t have to be a maintenance / money slave to a drive chain. If this category is something you’re considering, do yourself a huge favour and start by narrowing it down to the shaft drive bike choices. Currently Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, BMW, and Moto Guzzi offer drive shaft choices.
I feel like the H2 SX should be talked about a bit more in sport touring. It's a 200 hp missile but it's comfortable, smooth, and has some of the best electronics packages available.
FJR for the win! Been riding sport tourers for yrs now…VFR, FZ1, Concourse 14, Ninja 1000, & my current bike a 2014 FJR 1300. You wanna keep riding, better make your s.o. comfortable…she’s tired of sittin on a 3” seat 😁
I'm absolutely settled in to the Sport Touring life with my Honda ST1300. I may go for a new Yamaha FJ1300 in a couple of years. Of course.... I'm a 47 year old Sport Touring Dad, so it all makes sense.
I bought an ST1300 a couple weeks ago and love it so far. I'm almost 51 but not a dad, my girlfriend wants a bike with a backrest but I'm a sportbike rider at heart.
Im 27 I ride a 2014 Z1000SX (Ninja 1000). I mostly drive it sporty. I've taken it on track. But I've also taken it on long trips. Really a great bike. Would recommend. I want a Tuono V4 next tho
Bikes like the Ninja 1000SX or VFR800 definitely are probably the style of bike I should look at. The CBR650R and the Supersport 950 are similar, but are more faired sport standards in all reality, more upright then a 600 or 1000 super sport with more streetable power curves and gearing…
I have a 2004 BMW R1150RT and love it. I bought it 10 yrs ago. It now has 46K miles, 19 yrs old it still looks new, rides great, very comfortable, handles great. It has been very reliable except for in tank fuel pump took a crap. Not fun to change out but doable. While in there you will replace all the hoses and filter.
The newest GSXS1000GT+ is a great bike too although it leans more towards the sport side but with solid touring capability still. Once I changed to a 190/55 rear tire and upgraded rear suspension and had front/rear adjusted for my weight, 2Wheel dynoworks ECU flash to unlock throttle restrictions, it became a really fun bike in the twisties now. It's light weight enough like the Ninja1000SX for people that still want to ride fast on weekends and do road trips every now and then.
The GSXS 1000GT is also more accessible due to its price. Although its 50hp less, Holy cow how would you ever need more than 100HP for touring? at 90hp, it's waay more than enough to pass most cars on the interstate. I'd always advocate for the GSXS 1000GT unless you have the cash to spare then definitely go for the H2 SX
After many hours of research and sleepless nights, I also decided to go with the 2024 GSX S1000GT+… It now has almost 3,000 miles and I have not regretted a single one of those miles. The longest ride a coworker and I took was 473 miles in a single day, she has the Kawasaki ninja 1000sx. About halfway through the ride we traded bikes. I rode her ninja, she rode my s1000gt+. Long story short, at the end of the “test ride” she did not want to give my bike back lol. I found the s1000gt+ to be a very comfortable bike, my last bike was a CBR1000RR super sport, so that might have something to do with it.😅
I love my 21' Versys 650LT. Not as fancy as the 22/23 model, but it's comfy for my hour long commute to work. It's nimble, quick, and I can still throw it around on the turns. Maybe I'll get a full size tourer later but mid size is a niche too.
i Had a FJR 1300, i like the shaftdrive and the possibility to cruise smoothly on country roads or more speedy on Highways with enough power to overtake very fast. It is a real mile muncher and pure fun to ride.
I have several bikes but ride my fjr1300 almost daily. Might eventually get a big adventure bike when my off road skills improve, but they are kinda ugly to me. The fjr is a sleek looking, comfortable, rocket ship loaded with all of the electronic amenities you could want.
I realize they’re not as popular on our side of the pond, but I absolutely love my GSX1250FA….comfy…GOBS of torque (admittedly the HP is not amazing), and handles well….it doesn’t necessarily excel at any one thing, but it’s inexpensive, indestructible, and (IMHO) sexy as hell. A little surprised it didn’t get a mention. But, to each their own.
I can't believe you did not include the KTM 1290 super Adventure S. , The KTM, in my opinion, is the best of them all. I fitted my 2020 KTM SAS with a 17" front wheel and put Metzler Sportec M9 RR rubber on it. The bike is absolutely phenomenal and puts other sports touring bikes to shame. I put a Rottie stage 5 on it and it's has tons of power and most importantly torgue. It is comfortable as hell and fits my 6'5" frame.
No sport tourers nowadays, only awful adv, and some exceptions like the Hayabusa, but i miss the old great sport touring bikes, zzr1100, tomcat, the honda blackbird, vfr, bmw k1300s, zzr1400...
I’ve got what I consider in my biased opinion to be the best sport touring bike out there, the BMW K1600. 160hp fastest bagger on the planet, handles like it weighs 300 lbs less than it is, and comfortably eats up miles in luxury 👍🏻
The picture under the headline GO THE DISTANCE is a Honda NT1100. A very competent sport/touring machine that is not sold in USA. I have one and it fits the sport/touring mold nicely.
I've owned both the Tracer 9 (2015, back when it was the FJ-09), and the Ninja 1000SX (which I currently own). The difference between them is substantial--I'd say the FJ-09 was definitely a sports-tourer, while the 1000SX is literally a sports bike with added creature comfort and a sensible engine. My FJ-09 I could ride for 1-2 hours without much discomfort (although wind protection was not great, even with a touring windshield), while my current Ninja is not really that comfortable if going at +60 mph for a long time, as the riding position is more aggressive and the wind, while it's not buffeting, does strain your neck given that you're constantly against a stream of it. The clip ons are also quite low, even after adding ~4-5cm bar raisers. Overall, if you're getting into sports-touring, try to test ride before, as even within this same category, similar bikes will feel much different after 1-2 hours of continuous riding. I've also had an ADV (KTM 790 Adventure), and it was similar to the FJ-09, although I did feel I needed a larger engine to be comfortable in US freeways. I'll probably change my Ninja 1000SX soon, given that it's not very comfortable for longer rides, even though I love its engine (SO SMOOTH!)--this time I'll go with a bike that's more designed for touring and not just slightly modified for it. I'd love to own a Goldwing and go full dad but I kinda want to go for an in-between my mid-sized, ~200kg bikes before I go full 450kg behemoth lol.
I have commented about my ninja 300 before and I thought I wanted a zx6r but after my time in the military I have a herniated disk annnnnndndddddd the sport touring Versys is looking reeeaaaaalllll nice now. haha go dad bikes!
@@scottyang9016 I have owned one for almost 2 years and 15,000 miles. I can say confidently that it rides MUCH more like a big sport bike then anything else. It may LOOK like a tourer but it is ALL sportbike bones 🔥💯
No mention of the dark horse s1000xr And my poor K1300S that was murdered by a deer :( To answer your end question: settled into sport touring for sure! Better suited for the riding I’m *actually* doing on the road. All the rocket riders just don’t know what they’re missing! I didn’t, now I do.
The triumph sprint RS 955i and sprint ST 1050 are incredibly comfortable, fast and have alot of torque. I got one for $2000 a few months ago and i love it. Also i cant afford a h2 SX lol
Yammie not only missed the 'Busa {although the riding position is WAY too leaned over to really qualify) but he also miss the Ducati SuperSport 950s! The Tracer 9GT, which is a great bike, may bet lighter than my FJR1300 but I'd like to see you try to leave me in the twisties on it! Not. Happening. 😉
Technically Honda’s CBR650R could be deemed a lightweight sport tourer. The ergonomics are basically identical to a VFR800 Interceptor or a Supersport 950, it’s just smaller and quite a bit lighter then the VFR… although faired sport standard may be a better overall description of that bike
@@sleeper.simulant7327 I hear you. The 650 class is generally not considered in the Sport Touring class though although I agree that a bunch could qualify.
Depending on the condition of the roads where you live, adv bike wins if you have rough roads. As an added bonus the plush suspension stops you from banging your crotch into the tank on big pot holes. Comparing R1200RT to Super Tenere.
I'm curious about this papa Yam, how do you make a SPORT touring video without holding ANY of the kings of speed bikes in the last 20+ years. H2SX/SE, the BUSA, or the CBR1100xx Blackbird?
No mention of the BMW R90s (1975!) or the BMW R1250 RS and XR1000? And no I am not a BMW fan boy. (I did have a 1988 Suzuki GXF1000 Katana with hard bags). And no mention of the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello? Maybe you can get your buddies at Euro Cycle to hook you up. I'd like to see that test. Maybe not a H2 but your'e not younger either. (Gasp! He didn't go "there" did he?!!) The advantage of the ADV bikes are, it's a little easier to keep your license, you can carry all the junk, er, luggage you want and they have enough protective bars to keep your insurance rates and blood pressure from going up if it falls over in a parking lot. The sport tourers can't carry as much if you want to maintain a certain style ( especially demanded by euro bikes) and requirment of a longer inseam is less.
Excellent! That’s my truth as well! How come a guy from Ohio can be so european in its mindset? Supermoto rider, liking the Vrod and wearing proper equipment, preaching the right thing! I am getting an airbag vest, btw 😅
Still in-denial aging fastboy here, but starting to hope there's a Goldwing between me and the grave. I'd say RT1250R but every time I see one of those beige ones it reminds me of my grandma's Buick. Still, first manufacturer that comes out with a seat blowing cold air directly onto the back of my balls is likely to get my money, even if it looks like one of those fuglyass ADV battle droids.
I’ve had a Yamaha fjr and a Kawasaki concours but just recently bought a bmw r1250gsa and frankly it handles better and has better low end performance. Under 110mph in my personal opinion it’s a better sport touring bike then Atleast those 2.
Unfortunately it’s hard to find passenger reviews on bikes in this genre. If your gonna tour u might as well have the squaw on the back, or if your solo get a HD bagger and hit those biker bars for your warm overnight stops and a free breakfast
Well honestly if I did something besides my current cruiser a sport touring sounds pretty good. I may have bike being too tall problems though as I have a 28 inch inseam
1. I want a SPORT tourer, not a sport TOURER. 2. I don't need gps or apple car play on my bike. Use cardo or sena and keep your eyes on the road. 3. We need access to the ECU so we can tune our bikes ourselves. You don't need a dyno to do that. The bike already has an O2 sensor. 4. ABS is dangerous and should be outlawed. Save the money and put it on better MCs and calipers. 5. After ABS i don't want to play with electronic suspension. Save the money and put it on better suspension. 6. You don't need bags on a bike. WTF. I road the GSX-s1000 gt recently very nice. I wish it had a little more leg room and slightly higher bars. Looking for peg lowers and bar risers.
Absolutely! The GSX-S1000GT+ is a WHOLE LOTTA sport tourer for $14,100 + $590 destination & freight (2023 USD pricing), and sport touring is SPECIFICALLY what Suzuki designed the 1000GT+ to excel at.
Can you call the engine from the bmw k100rs a flat 4? I only know that a flat engine is a boxer engine but not a sideways mounted inline 4. But english isn't my mother tongue so clear me up 😅
I notice you're always calling out the DR650 Suzuki for just having a speedo and a carb. There's a reason for that, when you're out in the middle of nowhere the less computers and modern tech the better. There's a motorcycle story on the web somewhere about two guys riding across Africa. One on a BMW GS the other on a DR. Long story short the DR did the trip three times. The other two times he had to ride ahead and back to get parts for the BMW. Just saying.
I love my 2008 K1200s for sport touring and can also take it to the track a few times a year. I'm too old and tall to ride a sport bike for any length of time, but my k12s is a bit cramped for more than 5 hours of riding a day. 540lbs, 160+ hp, shaft drive. The only thing I'd replace it with is a Busa but apparently I need to check out the new Ninja100sx or just buy a track bike to satisfy that itch. Streetfighter V4s or MT10?
Easy : it’s basically a Suzuki. Proof : not so well finished, cheap in the category, basic. But… does anyone need more ? The real question is why chose it over any used FJR, better in every way ?

The sport-touring category was created by a single motorcycle and it was not a Yamaha. It was the BMW R100RS, all the way back in 1976.

But my K1200R Sport cost $4500. Dyno 154 HP at rear wheel, shaft drive, water cooled does 171mph never breaks.
(Gasp! He didn't go "there" did he?!!)
The advantage of the ADV bikes are, it's a little easier to keep your license, you can carry all the junk, er, luggage you want and they have enough protective bars to keep your insurance rates and blood pressure from going up if it falls over in a parking lot. The sport tourers can't carry as much if you want to maintain a certain style ( especially demanded by euro bikes) and requirment of a longer inseam is less.
Tracer 9 is a very good bike 🚲
Excellent! That’s my truth as well! How come a guy from Ohio can be so european in its mindset? Supermoto rider, liking the Vrod and wearing proper equipment, preaching the right thing! I am getting an airbag vest, btw 😅
I ride a triumph sprint 1050 GT, and i'm absolutely gutted that they dont make these bikes anymore.
2017 TTSE here and the only other bike I could imagine owning would be a triumph track bike
I can’t tell what hurts my back more, the gym stuff, the horrible posture at my computer or sport touring.
I would love a rockform mount, too bad they don't make cases for the a53.
I tour on a Triumph Street Scrambler 900. Gonna ride that babe across the U.S. one day.
Indian has a cooled seat
No love for the Honda? What are your thoughts about the Honda version?
I’ve had a Yamaha fjr and a Kawasaki concours but just recently bought a bmw r1250gsa and frankly it handles better and has better low end performance. Under 110mph in my personal opinion it’s a better sport touring bike then Atleast those 2.
If I spent 95% of my time on paved roads however, I want that remaining 5% to be pleasant. Is an adventure bike worth the trade-off?
I’m such a dad. I ride a Super Tenere and a VFR.
You totally forgot the bike that started sport touring the BMW R90s In 1974 and the BMW R100rs 1977. Get it together! 🤔
Yammie do u have any idea if the Tracer 7 and 7GT will come to the US?
Ninja 1000sx mentioned!
I actually had an fj1100 sold it and got a Ducati Monster and Diavel 😂
Hey Yam, what about the Ducati Supersport!
I'm preparing for my A2 licence. I've got my eye on Tracer 7 GT and Triumph 660 sport. Pros and cons please. Discuss...
Tracer
@@Synthetic-lt4edTraining is next week. Looking at the tiger 850 now.
Haggard Hillary ❤️
Is the GSX-S1000GT considered a sport tourer? Gotta give Suzuki some love
It is sport touring and a great bike aswell. I have gsxs 1000f i just love it
Absolutely! The GSX-S1000GT+ is a WHOLE LOTTA sport tourer for $14,100 + $590 destination & freight (2023 USD pricing), and sport touring is SPECIFICALLY what Suzuki designed the 1000GT+ to excel at.
I've been eyeing up one as I own a gsxs 750 and looking to get something for the wife & I, they seem like great bikes.
Yammie please try the apache
Can you call the engine from the bmw k100rs a flat 4? I only know that a flat engine is a boxer engine but not a sideways mounted inline 4. But english isn't my mother tongue so clear me up 😅
Yea FJR1300 Wooo!!
the main complaint with the K100 bikes was the bad vibration felt through the handlebars at 4K - 4.5K.
My memory is that the K75 series was ultimately more popular.
Fah Que Yams I like Tea!!
And you know Hil Dog!!
PAPA YAMS
Plz do a garage tour
versys 650 for the win!!!!
BEEN asking for yrs to hear what you gotta say about Honda cb1100! It's a sport touring that I of road a LOT lol
Easy : it’s basically a Suzuki. Proof : not so well finished, cheap in the category, basic. But… does anyone need more ?
The real question is why chose it over any used FJR, better in every way ?
