Can’t wait to play with my peonies tomorrow. They are my absolute favorite but I’ve never planted bare root prior to the last frost indoors. I appreciate your tutorial, Steph!!!🌸🌼🪴
Wow thank you just in time! I haven't been to Walmart in forever, and I plan to go this weekend specifically to look at bulbs. This is the first year I ever really appreciated bulbs. 💐💜💐💚💐💕
These are gorgeous Steph! I’m soooo tempted to drive to Walmart but I’m holding myself back! I’ve already bought so many! Last year I had a hard time cutting the blooms off my dahlias too! OMG what a fantastic tip about the weight of the package! You are so smart! 💗
Hi Steph, I have the Sorbet peony growing in my backyard and it is gorgeous! It's been there for more than 10 years and I love it. This coming fall, I need to divide and transplant some of those peony roots to other areas of my landscape. Today 3-2-2022 I recognized your beautiful property on Garden Answer's front yard videos. Congratulations on being chosen!
Hi there!! Thanks for stopping by. I'm so excited about the Sorbet Peony. Is it the one pictured on your profile photo 📸? Yes I was featured today, thank you so much!! I was so excited 😊 💚
@@HookedandRooted Yes, that is a picture of it growing in my backyard. I don't know if you can zoom in on that photo or not, but there is a tiny ant on that bloom.
Awesome Steph !! Tons of color you have there !! Your garden is going to look amazing soon !! Hope you guys are having a great weekend!! Cheers Jason and Colleen 🌱🌷🏵
Priced very reasonably at Walmart. I agree with u on making sure that u r getting a viable root, tuber, etc. That is why u should get them early and potting them up will also give u an early start.
Wow. Nice selection. I got the caladium multi pack of 5. I also just got that same Peony as well. It will be my 1st time groing peony. I hope it does well.
Walmart for the win! I picked up a few bags of dahlias last year, in addition to dahlias from online sellers and far and away my favorite was Zingaro from Walmart. I failed to overwinter them, but was able to pick up a few bags yesterday. I'm pre-sprouting them and hope to take some cuttings as I have grand plants to create a hedge in my raised bed garden. Great tips on looking for sprouts. I'd also add when looking at the bags of dahlias, loose, wiggly tubers is not a great sign as they've broken off of the stem.
I agree! The price is perfect for trying out dahlias. And even for more experienced growers. We could all use more budget friendly options these days. I've grown zingaro from Walmart also! In 2019, its in my other Walmart dahlia vid that I lined above. It was a beauty! Cuttings sound fun! I'm hoping to try from cuttings and from seed at some point also. I'll check out your channel! I agree about the loose wiggly bits, avoid those.
Thanks for the tips! I bought some dahlia tubers at Lowe's and Walmart last weekend using your selection method. I had been hesitant to grow dahlias but this will be a budget-friendly way to experiment.
Thank you so much!! 💓 glad your learning from them. That's my intention to teach some things I've learned, and to have a way of documenting my gardens changes 💚
Wow, love the Dahlias you have bought, and they will make a lovely display in your garden. As you probably know, we bought a lot of Dahlias recently for our new Summer Bulbs Flower Bed. As you say, the more you cut them the more they grow. We also have a lot of Peony plants in our garden - they look good in late Spring & early Summer here in The UK. Very Best wishes, Paul.
The creme de cassis is beautiful! I love how there is 2 tone coloring to the petals, dark on one side, and light on the other. I also enjoy the smaller size which makes it easier to use in floral arrangements.
Nice selections - one of my best dahlias was from home depot last year. I generally buy online, from costco, and walmart, HD, Lowes. One tip for growers is to buy as soon as they start selling them at the store and opening plastic and storing in a cool, dark location in your house. At the big box stores they can start to grow in the bags or start to mold. I pre-start my dahlias in pots and transplant out when it warms up. I think this gives me earlier blooms. They can get leggy but can be pinched. In zone 7 I start indoors and move to plastic greenhouse. I took a lot of potted dahlias to my son in zone 5 last summer and they did really well. Just found your channel so will go back and look at last year's dahlias. Thank you.
Good to hear! I agree with keeping them in a cold dark spot. I have mine in paper grocery bags in the garage by the door where it stays around 50 degrees. I had tried presprouting them by potting them up first week of April in the past, but I decided it was extra work and now I just plant them around mothers day directly outdoor. I may get blooms a couple weeks later, but it's ok. Thanks for watching and for your comment
Im subscribed but I haven’t been getting notifications for your videos. I stopped by Walmart the other day and saw bulbs too. They appeared in better condition and lower prices than I expected. Lidl had dahlia tubers last season.
Hi there! You'll have to hit the "bell" icon to get notifications. I don't have a lidl in my area but some of my Instagram gardening friends have gotten some there. Walmart definitely has affordable decent quality summer bulbs. Thanks for watching! 🌱
I grew most of thos! I thought they were gonna not grow as to how dry they were but they all grew so healthy and so many!! Can't judge a book by its cover lol. The huge yellow ones were bigger than my hand and almost bigger than my dinner plate!! There was one that did not bloom like the picture and it was actually prettier than the picture on the package!!
Great reminder that Walmart has really reasonable and beautiful options. I have bought gladiolus at Walmart and run into more thrips infestations. From here on out, I’ll be dipping everything into a bit of bleach or whatever other disinfectants I can find that are safe for that bulb/corm type.
Hello! They really do. Its great to have options for lower priced plants. Especially when many families have limited budgets for extras like gardening. Thanks for watching.
It looks like you made some great purchases love the colors. I have been looking everywhere for cream the casse. What area are you located in. Thank you for sharing!
Hi there! Oh I hope you find them. They are so pretty. I'm in Massachusetts. But other friends in other parts if the US have been finding them at their Walmart also. So it may be a variety that the all are carrying. Good luck!
OMG, Steph!!!! First, awesome video! Second, my poor wallet! Lol! It’s a good thing I budgeted for garden projects this year! Mercy, I am about to run to see my they have in my area! Thank you for the heads up….I think! Lol. I’ll report later via IG on what I got! I’m in trouble! 😂😂🤣

I know exactly what you mean about cutting them. I feel better about it when I have plenty but if theirs only one flower on a plant I won’t want to cut it. That’s a good idea about the weight of the package, I never thought about that. I always look in the bag as best I can an I try to go with the ones I can see live roots an shoots on them. Becareful with the crown gall. I found the tubers I got from Walmart last year had about 35% crown gall problem. I have the lavender perfection that I got last year from walmart. It was the last dahlia plant of mine to bloom which was pretty lately.. like a good 2 months after the rest started. It was the healthiest looking plant though. The blooms got huge like a true dinner plate. Most of my other Walmart dahlias didn’t end up being dinner plates but I still love them!
I was at Walmart this morning and I grabbed some of the sea hollys, echinacea and a clematis ! So excited for the snow to disappear so I can plant all these wonderful things.
Hi there! Oh the sea holly I started from Walmart bare roots a couple years ago. They are great! Such an interesting plant with a beautiful color. And such a pllinator magnet! Clamatis from bare root take a while for me to get going. But hopefully worth the wait! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🌱
It's worth a try. You could try soaking the dried ones over night to see of they rehydrate and to improve chances that you'll get eyes to form (dahlias)
@@HookedandRooted Awesome thanks so much for your fast response! Peonies/black eyed susan/purple coneflower/red hot poker/Hollyhocks and some others I think
That must be why my dahlias never bloomed that much. I am not one to cut my flowers. I prefer to enjoy them out in my garden. Thank you so much for this hint. I will cut my dahlias this year.
Hi! Right?!! I never used tp cut them before. Seemed counterintuitive. But the opposite happened. The more I cut, the more blooms I got. Give it a try!
