Dave, you’re the internet’s premier advocate for Holmboe’s music. Why he’s not spoken about in the same breath as Shostakovich is a puzzle I can’t assemble. 100%, I’ll be seeking out this disc. Look forward to your future discussions on his music. The quartets are chamber concerti deserve their day in the sun as well. ✌️

Thank you for this great talk about Vagn Holmboe. I think his string quartets deserve a special talk, they are important quartets of the 20 century. Happy New Year !

Wonderful! The Ensemble Midtvest recorded two discs with his chamber music. It is definitely worth a try. Thanks for highlighting the work of composers like Holmboe. They deserve much more attention.

I love Holmboe-he’s one I really owe to you and this channel. I’d love to see more about him here! I also wanted to put in a plug for a composer I only recently stumbled on, and one I believe you also like: more people like me need to hear Hendrik Andriessen! I can’t believe that I’ve only discovered his work recently. Guess that’s what happens when one keeps on listening.
Also: I got my mitts on the second Thomas de Hartmann disc in that series with the Lviv forces and think it’s terrific. It contains a double bass concerto that actually works, in my humble opinion-and that’s just the side dish. I’m sure you’ve heard it-you’ve heard everything, it often seems-but I wouldn’t have known about Hartmann if not for you either. So thanks for that too, Dave! Would love to hear what you make of that record.

Oh. John Storgårds again. He has recorded all kinds of underrated stuff. I'll listen a lot of this composer now!

Thank you for another composer to explore. Ever since the Vasks revelation (overflow room, I think?) I haven't hesitated to take you up on your recommendations for more recent composers. I may skip the "Requiem for Nietzsche" but otherwise I'm in.

Always a fan of Holmboe clear eyed sane composer modern day equivalent of Haydn in temperament perhaps😀
Greatest work 8th Symphony has that true drive and sense of inevitability.

I'm so happy to see you further the reputation of the late Vagn Holmboe - not primarily because he is my compatriote (woe on us "stupid European nationalists" as someone once named us), but because his very characteristic style and distinctive voice result in such interesting music.
And by the way, in your (and your esteemed colleagues on Classicstoday, Jed Distler's and Victor Carr Jr.'s) appreciation of Holmboe, you for once seem to be in complete agreement with your colleagues on The Gramophone (ten times woe! 😁) - at least with David J. Fanning ( together with Rob Cowan, one of the sane voices in said publication). Mr. Fanning considered Holmboe no less than the foremost composer of symphonies in the second half of the 20th century!

Love your channel Dave. First time caller, long time listener here & I am curious what books about Composers & Music you would recommend to someone wanting to learn more?

Mine, of course! But seriously, that's far to big a question for me to answer here.

Thank you for the review. This is off topic, but can you please consider reviewing (via UA-cam or your own website) two reasonably recent releases of less well known repertoire: Hugo Kaun's Symphony no 3 plus two symphonic poems (CPO) and Melcher Melchers' Symphony plus two symphonic poems (Ondine).
