For those who are picking up these thunderbolt 27" displays, most that I have seen have some splitting of the thunderbolt cable at the base of the end. I've used "Sugru" (All Purpose Super Glue, Moldable Craft Glue for Indoor & Outdoor - Adhesive Glue for Creative Fixing, Repairing, Bonding & Personalizing.), on dozens of Apple white power adapter cables, which also break down at the ends from being bent. The Sugru will form around the casing (it only works if there are no shorts in the actual electrical cables), and hardens over night into a semi-flexable protection of the cable. I've also seen it used on cables that cats love to scratch on! It's really a great way to rescue cables that are still working properly, but show signs of degradation of the outer casing. It's $15 for 3 packets.
...The usb connector lets you utilize the speakers, camera and extra usb ports with your host system ...I've been using two 24's for the last ten years
Here's my "funny" Apple display story (that fits nicely with this video) I bought the 24" (yes, I said 24" Apple Cinema Display in October 2009 for $999 (I almost choked it was so expensive...I paired it with my 2009 $1799 first generation Macbook Air laptop)......in summer of 2012 (almost 3 years later...but just three months before my AppleCare warrenty expired) the 24" Cinema Display "crapped out" on me. I took it into my local Apple Store in July 2012. I learned that day that the 24" Apple Cinema Display had been replaced by a 27" Apple Cinema Display in 2011.....in summer of 2012 apple just began selling the 27" Apple THUNDERBOLT display.....The apple store still had a brand new in the box 27" Cinema Display....so guess what they did....they swapped my "crapped out" almost 3-year old 24" Cinema and GAVE ME FOR NO COST the brand new 27" Apple Cinema Display. That was July 2012....it is now late August 2024 (12 years later) and my 27" Apple Cinema Display is STILL GOING STRONG connected to my 2011 Mac Mini. Yes, 2011 Mac Mini. Are apple products expensive? Hell YES !!!! But they last foreever and as you illustrated in this video the "old" 27" Cinema Display sure looks pretty damn good even today in 2024 compared to a "state-of-the-art" $1600 (2022) Apple Studio Display. YES... I'm a happy camper !!!!
Completely agree! Buying a 2013 Mac Pro tonight! With Cinema display too. Now that I have my other channel, I am so excited to get back to old apple gear!
If you are buying this second hand, check it working first. In particular, beware of the misty screen. What this means is that it looks like a bit like there is a damp patch on the screen. Only detectable in some lighting but annoying. Apparently, that is a common defect.
I have the 24 inch Cinema Display as well and I love it works good with my M1 MacBook Air just sucks that I only have 2 ports on it. and I bothers me that I have to use the USB to work the brightness and audio on the display.
great video I just got one for 75 and I am very happy as I looked for a long time and did not want thunderbolt so I could use it with many devices. Great video I'm very excited to use it for some years to come :)
I have one of these! I got it ages ago. Sometime in the mid-aughts, I think. It is a beast. Heavy! I recently updated my computer to a m2 MacBook Air and the damn thing still works! I had to get a dongle to connect the mini-display to USB c and another to connect the USB-A passthrough to USB C but it works great. The only thing that didn't work was the keyboard keys to control the screen brightness but a programs I found called Monitor Control that fixed that. It isn't the latest nor greatest but I don't care to drop a chunk of change. The res still looks good to me. I am hoping I can keep this thing going for many years. The speakers are decent, the camera is not great for today's zoom intensive culture but you can always use the feature to turn your iPhone into a webcam if you want better res for zoom. The USB-A ports on the back are also handy for older peripherals. This is the dongle I bought to connect the video. as i live in greece , i couldn't find it almost unused with its original box from a greek seller under 300 euros...i bought one from ebay also wit its original box for $250 and was faulty ... at least ebay gave me $80 back!!!wth???
Yes, using this also 'wakes up' the speakers so you also get sound out via the monitor on your PC. Mine is used in my home office with my Surface Pro and also my Chromebook
@@techno_eclipse what kind of " little issues"?... if it's about brightness control in win10 or win11, you need to use A small tool for controlling brightness of Apple Displays on a Windows, named Brightness Controller - developed by Jens Holst Schumacher
Very disappointed in this video. You just talked and talked about info that we already know or can find out. But you showed the 3 cables from the display. But said nothing about how it can be connected to a modern day laptop or Apple computer with those 3 cables! And reading some of the comments. Other people are asking the same questions. But you have never replied back to them!
I apologize. Let me link what I used to connect the display in the description. Could you explain what else you were expecting from this video for the future?
What Cables do I need for MacBook Pro M1 or M2. I picked one up today in the box with the clear stickers still on it, worked perfectly when I tested it with my retina 2013 MacBook Pro. $80
Thank you, for this excellent video concerning Apple's vintage 24-inch Cinema Display. In 2014, I decided to pick-up a used 2010, "mac mini" (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive). At this time Apple was still selling their 27-inch Cinema thunderbolt display at $990 (US). But, had stopped a few years earlier selling their older 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display. So, I was able to buy my used "mac mini" for about $500 and a used 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display for also around $500. Last year, I was planning to order a new "Mac Studio" and researched how to connect it to this vintage display and ordered an UpTab cable with a "mini display connector" on one end and a "USB C" port on the other end for video. For an audio connection for this monitor, you connect the display's "USB A" cable to an open "USB A" port on your M1 or M2 "Mac Studio" ... this also works for M1 or M2 "mac mini" models as well (smile...smile).
2024 - My 2020 M1 8/8 core MacBook Air's keyboard has started to fail, so I'm going to "Dock It" until I can afford to replace the keyboard or upgrade. Just bought a 27" Thunderbolt locally for $100 with Apple Thunderbolt to C adapter ($49.99) and Magsafe adapter ($9.99) included... so $40 .02 for the Thunderbolt Display! - Oh, plus a $10 Uber ride to get it home safe!
I am buying a 20 inch cinema display next week to go with my 2006 Mac Mini. Later I will be getting a 24 inch display to go with my other older Macs since I like to play old games. The 30 inch display will still work great and I also found a broken glass Thunderbolt display on the street which I hope to repair if it still works.
Would you say paying the 160 USD for one with 5y warranty would still be a good deal? Reputable physical store so even if it dies they will give me wither another monitor or the money back.

using the two of the 30" Aluminum ones :)
I have two of these connected to my 2013 Mac Pro. Thinking of getting a third one using my 32” for something else
I brought a 30 inch for $50….OMGOODNESS I LOVE IT!!!!!
I got mine for $60 in my local goodwill in San Fran

Yeah I agree, 2018 macbook pro doesn't even have 1 usb a port.....
when you sleep your macbook and press any buttion, that monitor instantly wakes up??
Yes, with an Apple desktop or laptop system the monitor will, just wake right-up.
Can you daisy chain this one with a thunderbolt version?

Is there a way for me to connect my IPad Air 5th gen to it? Trying to get around the “does not support” pop-up.
I need this cinema you buy?
I want a pink iMac… maybe you should review one of those?!
You just want a pink iMac haha
If you review it, maybe it will find its way upstairs into my possession lol
Hi, the monitor have heating problems?
I use it often to this day, and I have never had an overheating issue. It does get a little warm, but nothing to be concerned with
app called brightness control for pc.
I will look into that. So far without the brightness control it is still such a killer panel, solid colors that really hold up
Yes, using this also 'wakes up' the speakers so you also get sound out via the monitor on your PC. Mine is used in my home office with my Surface Pro and also my Chromebook
Don't buy it, becose it has a lot of problem with a backlight. I bought one half year ago and it has vertical moving lines on gray background.
Can I play gta if I connect pc to it
Does it work badly with Windows?
It’s okay. I’ve been using it on windows for 2 months with little issues
@@techno_eclipse thanks for your answer

No😢
Hi Can you explain how did you connect it to your “new” MacBook I have the same monitor and just bought Mac Studio I couldn’t find the right adapter
u just need 2 adapters the first is a mini display port to usb-c and second a USB to usb-c and your good to go
was there are 1440p version ?
27 inch version
Yes, I own the 2010 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display and it still works great.
Will it work with the iMac m2 chip
It should, you just need the proper adapters
You should have showed the display doing something rather than just showing a background picture.
Disliked.
