Read out, it sounds so much more consistent than the implementation was in the end.

    • @torreyrg42
      @torreyrg42 5 років тому +5

TL:DR everything looks more cohesive in hindsight.
This Depends on the definition of consistent, in terms of scheduling season 1 had some of the most consistent release schedules, but the community reception to the releases was very mixed for a number of reasons. Primarily different players experienced different levels of engagement since players were not forced to listen to, read, or pay attention to the main story and lore. (They still aren’t) and if the theme of a patch didn’t appeal to a player there wasn’t much incentive to experience the content.
From the return to south sun patch (May 2013 to the thaumanova fractal Dec 2013) the update schedule was incredibly consistent and predictable. Content and story being added every two weeks, as 4 week long mini-arcs. Compounding the fractured feeling of releases was that every 2 releases the previous content went away, so If a player missed it, they missed the progression of a number of character and story arcs.
Thinking back to my own experience, I knew what to expect, I knew when to expect content and more or less how it would be implemented (new events out in the open world, some dialogue, maybe an optional instance with more dialogue), and that it would be transient, but it felt like the story writers were just seeing what would stick to the dart board of current pop culture trends. They wanted to set up a mystery, but struggled hard to get community speculation rolling in a productive way, then answered every question the same way, with Mary-Scarlett-Sue

@@torreyrg42 Part of what I mean is, I played those patches but did not "get it". I did not realise which NPCs were important (also because I did not remember some from the Personal Story at all - or I never met them because of different branch choice) and sometimes I also missed the "point" of what was happening while mindless doing achievments.

    • @patrickk.6641
      @patrickk.6641 5 років тому

Well after all it is a game. There were many distractions from the main story during the patch periods due to daily work, achievements, dungeons, worldbosses etc. I formyself had a bunch of freetime during these period of gw2 so I was lucky to exessively sunk hours into the game but it was kinda odd for a game that was build around the idea of play as you like. To follow the story you had to be extremely active, speaking with every npc during the leveling process and of cause during the events. And even than some things - like ambient dialouges - were pretty easy to miss. So you are - or were given the time that has past since than - not alone. I bet a coin that there were many more players who got lost during the story of season 1 and that is most likely one of the reasons why there was a significant decline in player engagement during that time. It was an ambitous project but it doesn't quite fit into the gametype of an mmo. Till today in some regards.

    • @torreyrg42
      @torreyrg42 5 років тому +3

JorikPar I agree with such a limited window, lots of player focus became on finishing out achievements before they went away and the details were totally skipped over by the focus on rewards.
as Patrick said players with more play time were able to dig a bit deeper, but I always remember that the devs said in interviews that they wanted to do away with forcing big walls of text down the players throats, but that meant that players that wanted those walls of text and dialogue now had to go searching for it.

I'll admit while Job-o-Tron wasn't really as important as say Rox or Braham, he still had an arc through the season. Heck I'd argue he is "the asuran companion" in S1 rather than Taimi. Job-o-Tron is in Southsun cove being a jerk who loses his job because of us, Hobo-Tron was hilarious and got captured by Scarlet, raises money as Ho-ho-Tron to repar damages by Scarlet, helps the wounded citizens from LA and later helps you defeat Scarlet's armies and hologram as Heal-o-Tron during LA invasion, and when the city gets rebuilt he works for the Lionguard as Hero-Tron :P

I wasn't around when season 1 happened, I only saw bits after old LA was destroyed, but never really looked into what was going on back then. I watched a ton of videos on season 1, that 3hr something cutscene movie included and I always thought that was enough of a recap but........ !! This video now was so much more comprehensive and enjoyable, I feel like I understand everything that was going on so much better now! Your reading of this was amazing, listening to the story was so exciting and I love the visuals you put into the video, too! I'm sad I wasn't there to play the whole thing live as it happened but I'm also not sure if I would've understood everything as I do now, so I'd really really love to see this content implemented into the game again to experience as a whole bundle of content like the other living world seasons ; ;)) It's such a good story.
Also I think Anet did a great job with all the Dragon's Watch characters, they still became very dear to me despite not having met them during s1 first but I would for sure love to be properly introduced to them as it should have happened. I won't give up hope for that to happen at some point > _

I'd _love_ a video where you not only read from the wiki, but actually talk about it. What were the encounters like? What were some speculations? How did the player base react to certain things? How did ArenaNet communicate? What were your feelings about all of that? Basically, let's sit down by the fire place and let WP tell us a story how it's been back in his days.

Watching this really made me remember just how confusing all the different storylines were at the time. I remember feeling assaulted by all the different aspects of the plot... toxic molten aetherblade steam creatures.... WTF!! And how hard it was to see the link between them. BUT then the glorious excitement of the live events... the magic of the festival of the four winds, the marionette and the wonderful battle on the breachmaker which remains one of my favourite gaming moments of all time. Such a strong feeling of being in it together with the other players who'd managed to get on that transporter up to the ship, and the mechanics of the hologram fight were quite original at the time. Even something small like swimming down into the bay in Lion's arch to see the light that had turned green and wondering what was going on felt exciting somehow. I think, by not making season 1 readily accessible, it's lives on forever in our nostalgic minds through very rose tinted glasses... I was so in love with the game at that point. Nice memories, thanks for the reminder WP!

I don't think I have ever had that many aha moments ever before, going "so that's why!" at every passing minute. I'm someone who enjoys map completion but even after completing it more than five times, I'm left wondering why the maps are the way they are. (I started playing in April 2018 I think)
When I had entered the visions at the eye of the north, I never really knew when those visions took place. Sure, I could explain what was going on in them but other than that, I was totally lost. That is just one of the many examples where the entire context was missing (to me at least), and now it just clicked.
Damn, WP, thank you for this mesmerizing summary with great visuals so that (for example) I could easily follow where the events take place. Just wow.

I’m here four years after release just to say, as someone who has never (and probably will never) play GW2, I would kill to see more summaries in this style. GW2 has an extensive and pretty original world and story, but very few people have ever bothered to talk about it at length, and even the people who did talk about it mostly just give high-level overviews.
This is a great resource for people who want to know more about the story and world of GW without necessarily diving into the game itself!

High quality production, as usual, WP! I am thankful I was there when Season 1 unrolled, and could experience it as it was meant to be...
Personally, I have only one very minor disappointment about the video: I was surprised you did not use the "Hard Boiled" animated cinematic that depicts Logan hiring Marjory to investigate on the murder of Theo Ashford and ultimately also meeting Kasmeer. Not only that cinematic has a delightful "noir" flavour, but when it came out it was perceived by the community as a distinct step up in quality when it comes to GW2 storytelling. Moreover, and this is probably the most interesting point, that cutscene is one of the few fragments of Season 1 that is still fully available in game by using the Marjory's Journal item. Given all the controversy over Season 1 not being available in game anymore, this relic is an interesting and functioning in-game vestige of it.

Hearing you read it like this it feels like a much better and not as random story as it felt at the time.
Now I wish so much that they would implement season 1 again. My version would be to add a change to the map system so that each map could have different versions set at different time in history that you could waypoint to like any other map but separate from the other time-versions. This would also make it possible for the devs to let us come back to places we already been in the world without robbing us of the the how it was before. That together with a story journal for the story steps of season 1 would in my mind in the best way re-create the events. But it would fracture the community over quite a few new maps so I can see why the devs wouldn't do it this way.

I started playing a month before the PoF launch, and around 5 months later I had gotten enough into the game and decided I wanted to _truly_ understand the story. Jumping right into the PoF storyline when it launched, you kinda felt like those characters from movies that get amnesia and don't remember anything or anyone, yet everyone treats you like a dear friend. I still remember when I saw the first walkie-talkie messages from Taimi and went "I don't know you but I'm sure you're nice."
What I greatly miss with the Dragon's Watch members (beside Rytlock) are the story instances where we meet them for the first time. Since you have a memory of the first meeting, the journey with the characters become so much more enjoyable and you notice more clearly the character development they go through. I've created relationships with them all with start from Living World Season 2 - which made me really feel like an amnestic character.
I've read through the entire wiki page about Season 1 two times, read forum posts about it - and now I've watched this video. It was a great summary and the visuals helped greatly with imagining how it was. Despite how Anet released Season 1, I _really, really_ hope they will be able to release it in the future and make it replayable.

I missed out playing back then so I appreciate the retelling of the story. It was referenced a lot during Living story S.2 and HoT so its probably very confusing for a lot of newer players when they reference something that happened during Season 1 without a detailed retelling or way to experience it in game.

WP, thank you so much for this beautiful recap of season 1. I started playing shortly before HoT and I've always felt lost since I could not play season 1. But now I feel like I was right there during all the action. Thank you again, great video.

Best hour, 6 minutes and 35 seconds of this week. Truly amazing narration and explanation of season one, which to this day remains my favourite part of Gw2. Even though I was young and I didn't understand everything back in the day these missions and epic cinematic moments shaped my late childhood, my friendships and improved my social and English skills. Sadly I no longer appreciate the game as I did when I was younger, but this video brought back so many memories. I shed a tear and gave you a big thumbs up WP, thank you for this video!

Thanks to all the people putting effort to keep the lore out there written properly. And thank you WP for making this video and reading for us. I enjoyed it a lot! I've missed everything during lw s1...not knowing English and going through my first mmo afraid of every step. I regret I didn't push myself more to understand the game. It made me miss the most interesting times in the Tyria's history. All I've seen was old LA, dragon hologram and LA rebuilt...all that very briefly. It hurts since I'm deeply into this game.

I think one of (many) reasons WHY this never remade is because GW2 doesn't posses any sharding technology.
This technology while present in (many) other MMOS in fact not present in gw2. It allows different instances of the same map for a player depending on the player's progress, like if you haven't met this NPC before you won't see them on Open World Map.
This is a reason why while the Scarlet invasion was UP people who did their personal story (up to 30 or after) saw the Lion's Arch burning or covered in toxin clouds making everything in their personal story in Lion's Arch a fucking joke.

Season 1 being unavailable content is like driving a massive massive continent between the story and your player base's experience of that content.
It's kind of like trying to enjoy the Star wars saga while being forbidden from watching Empire strikes back. wtf.
I've been playing this game a long time but I still feel completely un-invested in the story, character relationships and my character's place in it all.
Important NPCs talk to me and I'm like "who the f are you?"
That's what GW2 story should be called "Who the F are you? The game." ...all because that Scarlett's war experience abyss.
...hopefully this video will help mitigate against that feeling, but this video should not be necessary. GG anet.

TYSVM for this video. I loved season 1 of the living world (yes, the Scarlett Briar story got poo-poo'd as bad writing and lazy, but the events were HUGE! Truly felt like the world was evolving). It was so great to see it recapped in this manner. I left gw2 during the break after season 1 and have re-downloaded it, bought the expansions and the episodes I missed, and am truly enjoying it. Unfortunately I am so far behind that I feel I will never catch back up.

50:00 i forget how canon Edge of the Mists was for season 1 yet at the time all seemed a bit of a mish mash of different stories. It was actually pretty coheisve once seeing a video like this. Braham and Taimis relationship is great. You definitly notice it in season 3. Braham springs to action on a number of occasions when he finds Taimi is the one in trouble

I actually like season 1 the best out of any of the Living World seasons. I don't know, it just felt like this big mystery.
I admit it was too far between updates etc, but I honestly loved that feeling that there's something going on, but we don't know what.
And my second favourite season is... season 2. I feel like I'm somehow enjoying these seasons in the reverse order compared to most people.
I also enjoyed Heart of Thorns much, much more than PoF, but not for the story, but for the Jungle.
That damn frustratingly confusing and beautiful mess of a jungle. The sense of adventure and danger I felt when first exploring HoT was something I had not experienced in an MMO in many, many years. I adored it. PoF felt flat and boring in comparison, although I did enjoy the expansion, just not nearly as much as I enjoyed HoT.

Recently came back to the game in 2018 after a long break (I quit during chapter 1 season 2), Season 1 was great playing though it suffered from long breaks of nothing happening, taking 14 months to tell. It sounds similar to season 4's long one and half year telling. I do count myself lucky having played though and really wish I could go back and play it all again, this time without the long waits for content and the polish of GW2 today.

Thank you for this video. As someone who only started playing Guild Wars 2 recently, it's nice now getting context for various events and monuments scattered around the map. It's a shame Season 1 isn't playable, but I imagine some locations looked vastly different back then as this seemed to have had a somewhat, if lesser, similarity to how WoW's Cataclysm changed the map.

As someone who joined the game years after Season One, this entire video was an absolute eye-opening godsend - especially as I really adore the story. There's so many things which I knew nothing to little about, such as the Tower of Nightmares and the toxic stuff, the Aetherblade, and the Molten Alliance - and the fact ALL of these things were tied together in so many ways? That's both mind-blowing and super interesting!
It truly is a huge shame we haven't got anything playable for season one, given just how much stuff happened, and how much of it was grand, super fascinating events which also introduce us to the cast we still run with nowadays! The in-game recap being so incredibly vauge really doesn't help matters at all either, but that's all been complained about before.
Anyway, this big rambling comment is essentially a way of saying thank you for this video, and for clearing up such a big story blindspot, and reavealing that said blindspot was even larger than I even realised! I can't wait to see what more Vids you do in the future WP!

I played guild wars 2 from launch up until the chapter of season 1 where you fought the massive marionette.
I absolutely loved the personal story and the invasion of Orr. I was looking forward to the next story and the long, drag of a story that was season one drove me to quit. Scarlet was so unbelievable as a villain. Why bother waking up mordremoth at all? She clearly could have just destroyed the world herself, so silly. Wrecking lions arch was terrible. I miss the original so much.
And that ending... scarlet literally had the world of tyria on the brink of destruction and the Pact is like.. nah we're cool. I'm sure.

I’m genuinely glad you took your time to put this together. I just picked up the game for the first time in so many years, but listening to you tell this story gave me so many memories. I remember when Lions Arch was suddenly lain to waste. The immersion of the story into the game at that time was immense and so dramatic. So fun.
And here I am now starting to replay Season One again, before finally experiencing the expansion packs.
Well done, fantastic narration, great production. Sincerely, thank you for this.

The Great Destroyer was the first champion of Primordus, which the dwarven race sacrificed themselves to defeat. Just like the Great Destroyer was for Primordus, Scarlett Briar was for Mordremoth. She was his very first champion. She peered into his mind and he called her as his champion, corrupting her mind to his will. Everything she did after that was to serve Mordremoth.

Holy crap, I just started season 2 today after 7 years off the game and I stumble on this by chance. Didn't realise how important it would be to have something like this seen prior to starting season 2.
It's ridiculous, I genuinely would not recommend GW2 to anyone who has not played season one when it came out because the implementation of the system is hot garbage. Don't get me wrong I love the story, now that I know it, but if I hadn't gone through this video and checked the wiki about some characters I would have been completely lost.
To top it off I received a mail in game telling me to go to the eye of the north, mind you I hadn't even finished my personal story yet which further added to the confusion as you cannot do anything before you finish a mission half way through season 4. It's baffling how something so good can be so utterly ruined just because they didn't bother actually creating a meaningful coverage to the story.

back then i said that i didnt mind that all of s1 was live content that would never come back, because i was an active player that participated in all of it. the argument, that new and coming players cant play it, wasnt one for me, as i saw it like : tough luck, your fault for not playing a game when its new and beeing a latecomer that arrives 3 years later after most people are already done.. its 8 years later now and i start to realise that my memory of s1 starts to fade, because i heard so much details in this video about it, that i totaly forgot and that wouldnt be the case, if i had replayed s1 like 8 time, as i did it with my other chars.

@woodenpotatoes for some reason your videos (for me) always stop and the page has to be refreshed to continue, whilst this may occasionally happen on other channels generally when it is struggling to load an ad, with yours though it happens close to once a minute, some videos every 10-20 seconds and there is always an advert on the refresh (again seemingly unique to your channel). Any idea why? it has made it rather difficult to watch :( excellent video though, wish it had been there when i went from Personal to Season 2.
