Big fan of the Podcast, trying to figure out which paddle to upgrade to.. Ive been playing for about a year now, on a 13mm $99 paddle.. feeling a little overwhelmed on what to go for since there's so many options, so many variations, and options around the corner as well.. I tried playing a CRBN 3x, but didn't seem to like it? Maybe I need to give the carbon fiber face another chance.. Wanted to get the luxx because I played with it and it really felt good, but really concerned about wearing out the grit. don't want to pay twice if I don't have to. No way for me to try the different kinds before I buy so idk how to know what's right for me.. really wanting to improve my control game cause I'm really struggling to drop consistently still. Maybe you have some advice?
Thank you for your support! Regardless of what you choose, I would go with a thicker paddle, preferably 16 mm. Gearbox has one that’s affordable. You could go with the GBX or the G16. Selkirk also has a new one. It’s called the Vanguard control. All of these options are $200 or less.
My first paddle I got was the vatic pro prism flash which is a control paddle. I've since moved on to a 6.0 Ruby but I'm really glad I started with the vatic. I would highly recommend it to any beginner.
Your observation at 27:40 about seeing rec players using power paddles is spot on. But then, most rec players, especially 3.0-4.0s are "banger" wannabes. I'm trying to make the transition from 4.0 to 4.5, at the age of 70, and what I'm finding is that against the better players I face (say 4.3 to 5.0) my dink and drop game extends points, but doesn't win any points, and the better players have just as much or more control as I have, but a lot more power. So I'm moving to a more power paddle, but my poor partner is paying a price in plastic tattoos as I pop up more dinks. The price of progress.
Good for you👍 Keep moving forward. Video coming soon explaining when to attack based on vertical and horizontal zones. This should help your progress so make sure you’re subscribed.
Great podcast! currently a 4.5 player and bought the gearbox pro power about a month ago. Thought I would be able to handle the extra power but it’s just too much. Going to buy the luxx control now based on your recommendation.
Great video. Thanks for the comments. I was a great tennis player 40 years ago. I started playing pickleball 3 months ago and been playing 16mm paddles. I have great top spin and slice shots. So far dinks and control is great. Question should I go thinner paddles? I feel I can turn it on and kill shots with all my top spin and it stays in but want to see more speed. With paddles changing been waiting also been reading a lot of Kevlar paddles so longer I wait it looks like the paddles are getting better. Would like to hear your thoughts...Thank You!
It probably won’t hurt, if you’re looking for some more pop! Sounds like your racket experience put you a few steps ahead in pickleball.👍 If you try a thinner paddle, we would suggest using that paddle at least the next two times you play. Don’t give up on it right away and think that it’s not for you. Different thicknesses require time to get used to them. Happy pickling!
It said Y Hello 😂

@@picklebrainpod Thanks so much for the suggestions! I will keep looking for something in that range :)

That’s good advice to start with control and gradually work your way to power. Thanks for your input.👍
Same. Started with the flash but I moved into a DBD

Power Air core thickness is 13mm
Thank you!
Sock went back to the control air in the next tournament. Haha
Ha ha Yeah he switched back to the Luxx in men’s dubs. Who knows which paddle he’ll use next tourney??? Fun to watch though.
Ya, who knows what paddle he will pull out next?
He actually used the power air in mixed as well and then lost like first or second round and said, yep I need that control baby!
Keyboard Commandos!
😂
