I really appreciate you sharing a look at your creative process! This video and your one about the 10 things you wish you knew as a beginner were incredibly helpful as someone who’s finding the confidence to get into physical art 💚 Thanks, friend!
I also like to walk away and come back later to see if something needs tweaking. There's no rush and it's nice to have something to play with in my mind while I'm away from it. I also take a pic with my phone so I can see it with a different eye, and like you, I will also know how to put it back together in my preferred layout.
Yes!!! To your comment...It always helps me when I walk away from a piece of art. I always have a new and added perspective when I come back to the art piece. And yes to the phone comment. It’s like an objective view through the lens, another set of eyes! And I create better when not rushed. Sending you creative wishes!
What a helpful video! To learn that an experienced - and outstanding - collage artist such as you takes several days to put a piece together is so good to know! Thanks, Margarete.
I like to take a photo of my collage layout with my phone before committing to glueing everything down. It also helps me remember where things were so I know the order I should glue them down in. I also like taking the “in process” photo because sometimes I see things in the photo I didn’t see without the camera.
Having a new video to watch from you is a highlight in my day. It inspires me to go and create. Your thought process on how you pull a collage together is very enlightening. A very well done video. More please!!!
Thank you, I enjoy your clear videos. The Last rubberstamp you used , the round one , there was TURKU Åbo written. It feels funny because I happen To live In Turku, In Finland, Åbo is Turku In swedish language. Happy you used it, the little happy thing!
Margaret, what a really wonderful piece this is! I totally enjoyed listening to your thought process as you worked. It helps me, as the viewer a lot. Really LOVED that torn playing card!
I really love your collage process! It's really thoughtful. The stamp would have been 1970's or 1980's. The 1/2p on it went out of circulation in 1984 😊❤
I really enjoyed the video. You make everything look so easy and provided some really great tips. Just wondering if you can make a video that provides suggestions on how you organize your paper scraps and ephemera and how you go about selecting what you are going to use for a given collage. I think you mentioned in the video that it took several days to select the items you were going to use. I sometimes get overwhelmed completing that part of the process. Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thank you Margarete, so much enjoyed this video. Amazed at the # of pieces you used and displayed so perfectly !! You are a Master of this Art. This is a beautiful piece and I love the base you used, glad you had more than 1 !! I miss stamp shows. My sons and I always went when I lived in the city, but up North no such thing. I have so much enjoyed this group.
Thanks Margarete! Great video! I really struggle with background and how to create a background and overlapping images and fodder in the frame. It is something that causes me great anxiety. I actually often make a masterboard. But, often I feel like my images or my focal point is just floating in the frame. I am going to try make a small collage since I often work with 5x7" or 8x10" collages. I think I might play around with a 4x6" and I am going to use a stamp that I really like as a focal point. Thanks again for taking the time to show this. Have a great day!
4" x 6" is my absolute go-to, I'm not sure why. Do you have a size that you are most comfortable in? If you tend to go for larger sizes, then maybe a smaller size like a 4x6 will make a difference some how. Less space, so fewer opportunities to keep adding more things. Good luck! I hope you like a smaller size. 👍🏼🧡
I have been enjoying some of your videos having just discovered you. You are inspiring me to give collage a try with things I have in my craft room. Have you ever tried press n seal to put overtop of your collage once you have it the way you like it, and then glue it down? It will keep all the pieces together as you've laid them down. You can also reuse the press n seal many times.
Thanks for sharing your process. It’s always fun to see how artist work. I love starting with the stamp as the focal point, I have many that deserve to be focal points I just find it difficult to create a complete collage around them.
It's definitely a challenge to find the right papers that are going to compliment your postage stamp. Just be patient, I say. Keep some thing out on your desk and play with combinations until you find something that works. 👍
Thanks for sharing your process! I love your style. My question is how do you keep each collage different. I find that I fall into a pattern or formula so my collages begin to look similar after a few.
Good question! I find that my collages have a certain aesthetic that make them look similar, too. I'm ok with that, and each collage looks slightly different because of the different papers I use. When I'm tired of that style, I will make a deliberate choice to change it.
Beautiful card and explications. Thank-you.. It s possible to have measures of this card? I hope you are well after storm and haven t damages. Nice Sunday
Yes 100%. I've been watching my pieces over the years to make sure that there is no changes on the paper. So far it looks exactly the same, years later.
@@MargareteMiller she starts with the items that are on the top layer and begins gluing them to the next layer, but she mainly glues the middle area of the items and leaves the outer edges of each piece until she is satisfied that she knows where it belongs.😅(I’m sorry-I’m falling asleep 😴 whilst texting my reply here and have to keep erasing strange stuff that “just appears before my eyes!!”Lol so if something doesn’t make sense that’s why!! )

Thanks for the slow, thoughtful process… very helpful!
Thank you for showing & telling us the reasons why you put things where they are. I think I get it!!

I agree. This is a great tip 🙂❣️👏🏼
Great to watch other people's thoughts when creating collage. The British stamp is from Christmas 1983.
Oooh, good to know about the stamp. 1983! Wow!! 😮
A very nice partly British collage except the postcard and mainly about postage. Thanks for showing us this it was lovely and unusual.

Hmmm. Interesting questions, Dolores! I'll think about making another video to cover them 😉👍🏼. It's hard to explain in a sentence or two.
Thank you! Very helpful.

Wonderful!! So glad you are inspired to create! No, I haven’t tried press & seal. I need to look for that! Thanks. 💙

Beautiful collage...TYFS!! 💌
Thank you Margarete. This was a fantastic video! Very helpful!
Thanks, Pat! I'm so glad you liked it 👍💖
Good job! Really like the finished piece.☺️

Beautiful card! Do you seal your work when completed?
Thank you! No, I don't seal. I like the "naked" paper. I like the way it looks and the texture, without anything on top.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome! 🙂❣️👍
Beautiful card and explications. Thank-you.. It s possible to have measures of this card? I hope you are well after storm and haven t damages. Nice Sunday
The card is 4 inches tall x 6 inches wide.
💜💜💜
Thanks for a helpful lesson. Do you trust Skor tape to be permanent over the long term?
Yes 100%. I've been watching my pieces over the years to make sure that there is no changes on the paper. So far it looks exactly the same, years later.
What if you do something you don’t like, for example what if you didn’t like it after you used the stamp?
You can try to remove it (a stamp for example). If it doesn't come off, collage over it with other papers. 👍🏼
Do you never glue top down? Barbara from 49dragonflies does that with this kind of collages.
Hmmm. I don't know what is "top down" glueing.

I see... . That's an interesting idea, actually. I hope I can remember to try it so I can experiment with that technique! 💜
