After 3.0, the USB crowd started sniffing glue. Then they peer pressured the HDMI guys into trying it. Only a matter of time before the monitor naming cartel introduces them to the real hard stuff.

Thanks for these! Project mini micro inspired me to search away from nucs. Now for the price of probably 2 similar nucs I've got 2 dell 5080 micros and 2 hp elitedesk g4 minis running 2 vsphere clusters. Ridiculously cost effective, fairly configurable, and really quiet! Only thing I wish was some sort of pcie access. Sadly about the best I can do for network speed is 2.5gb usb adapters.

Hey man, love the coverage you’ve been giving on these mini-yet-mighty machines!
I might be a dissenter on this one, but I am not a fan of the editing on this video. I don’t think this kind of video really needs any interlude music or title cards that show the viewer which section of the video they’re on. Time stamps in the description do an excellent, efficient job of that already. I love your videos where there’s not a ton of interruption, just you spitting facts for x-amount of minutes straight.
In any case, keep up the awesome work!

Right. So since I narrowed my selection down to two Lenovos, another two HPs joined the fray and now the Dell, thank you very much for making my decision more difficult! :D
As I understand, the differences are mostly subjective or pertain to details, which do not really matter too much (how often will one realistically need to access RAMs). Sadly, in what matters, that is the CPUs, I guess, and the bang for the buck, I am kinda lost.

It was a way to make consumers think the manufactures - which are also members of the USB consortium - always had something new to sell, when they were in fact selling the same products.
      Anyone with a bit of logic would have used USB 3 Type A 5 Gbps / 10 Gbps and USB 3 Type C 5 Gbps / 10 Gbps / 20 Gbps / whatever Gbps.
Now that smartphones switched to USB-C it's even worse as charging cables are USB 2.0.

I know I am two years late to this review but I purchased a 7090 micro the other day to start homelabbing and I want to upgrade the storage. I read somewhere that you can run all three ssd's together (one 2.5 and 2 m.2's) without any problems. But, I was wondering if I could use a low storage (128g) 2.5 ssd for the OS and then run two m.2 (either 500gb each for a total of 1tb/ or two 1tb which seems overkill) in raid for VM storage. Thanks and cheers!

    Hey Patrick,
    Great Video!
I just got 20 of these Optiplex 7090 UFF (i5 10500T) and after I had unpacked and fired up five of them I noticed that the fans are very much audible. They sound like their bearings are defective. It's ok when the case is open, it gets worse when it's closed. They're not crazy loud but I wouldn't want one of these on my table because it's a noise that makes you crazy.

I think part of the reason Lenovo and HP dont use the solid mount SATA port any more is because of flexibility, Lenovo and HP both offer models with PCIe cards and you wouldnt be able to use a PCIE network card/graphics card with these rigid SATA ports on the motherboard.
Personally i'd rather them use the rigid connector, and then just omit the connector for models destined for a GPU, because it seems that if you dont order a machine with a card, they omit the PCIe connector(leaving the bare through PCB holes in the motherboard for a 16x slot)

Maybe you’ve already done this, but if you could do short primers on the various types of devices, so people like me without a deep background in tech can understand better. The people who are your normal audience probably understand way more than me, and would not be interested in primers. But I could really use them, if there is time. It would also be neat to see these mini machines hooked up to various peripherals to see how they fit into the normal office set up, for us visual learner types. Thank you,

But if you want a server with 64go ram for me the HP and the Dell are exactly the same in performance.
Just take a look in price, refurbished Dell can cost less than HP, at least in my country you can find a refurbshed dell optiplex 7090 with 16go around 300$ and a hp more like 400$ so I just take the cheaper if both of them have the same CPU and 2xM2.

Optiplex 7090 has 20Gb USB! Plus there is barely a difference b/w Gen3 and Gen4 NVMes. I last time I bought one I just went for Gen4 so I don't have to bother later on with an upgrade. That Gen4 NVMe would do great on 7090. Though I am kinda waiting for Gen12 or maybe Gen13 Optiplexes, that would be a game changer.

I just got a 7090 SFF and it came with a Gen 3 NVME drive and I want to drop in a Gen 4, but none of the support articles from their website, manuals and any information online points to it supporting Gen 4, with or without an 11th gen cpu. My cpu is currently the i5-10500 65w version and I want to upgrade to the 11th gen so I can use 3200mhz ram as it's cheaper, but I might have to stick with what I got and just swap out the stock 8gb of ram with 2666mhz since there is no point upgrading my cpu if I can't ever get a Gen 4 NVME drive to work only Gen 3. Unfortunate. I have 2 NVME drives in my Lenovo P350 SFF, 1 is Gen 4 and other Gen 3, they get 6800/3600 reads respectively.

Does HP vendor lock their AMD CPUs like Lenovo does or no?
(P.S. I love these videos. It is certainly giving me a lot of food for thought, especially as the Mac MIni that's running my TV is aging and the Intel NUC's thermal management system sucks, so I am looking that when I upgrade and/or replace those systems, that I am going to looking for something with a little bit of a bigger chassis, and thus, a bigger CPU HSF solution so that the system would be more performant.
P.S. #2 - Not crazy about this editing either, especially the background music that was chosen for this. I thought the audio from one of my other tabs was going (could've been the kind of music that ads might have picked).)
Thank you for doing this project.
Also, if you would be nice if you were start compiling a database so that I can search/filter the types of units that for example, offer an AMD CPU because I tried going to the manufacturer's website and that was a complete mess.

Good feedback points. On the HP vendor lock, we have the 405 G4 coming (I think that is 2nd in Alex's editing queue) that was older, so it is not being tested. We have a 805 G6 that is newer and now have three test platforms to check if the CPU works.

  • @fabiangomez357
    @fabiangomez357 4 місяці тому

Hi and thanks for a great series. Considering the price on these things the I5-10500T units is a terrible deal unless you plan on using them for micro virtualization since they have 12 threads. You will however still get 3 units equipped with i5-6500T CPU:s for the same price. And then you will have more ram and more disk, greater redundancy AND 50-100% additional computing power depending on what you plan to do. Sure they will consume a bit more power but that is still only a problem if you use all the power.
So, great units but way to pricey for now.

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo

It would be REALLY nice if, your project tiny mini micro page, had a better overview of all the USFF devices you have tested.
Comprare them all in a spreadsheet type of diagram or at least a spreadsheet comparison of each brand.
I se very little to no technical comparison on the website.
And that is a huge letdown, when you are promoting your project each time you review a USFF system.
Otherwise your videos are ok with information.

1/12/23 I bought a 7090 new in March of 22. It is the worst POS I have ever bought from Dell. The 2nd video driver didn't work so they replaced the motherboard. The HD loses data such as the server settings at random times. The new motherboard is jacked up too. So they are replacing that and the HD again. The Firewall settings keep getting dropped too. The 7090 is a LEMON !!
And I love the other 19 Dell computers I have bought over the last 15 years. Don't buy this POS!
