  • The perfect stylus for your tablet really depends on what you're using. Capacitive styluses generally work the same across different tablets or touchscreen devices. Digital styluses usually support only the OS and products they are made for.

Thank you. My HP x360 15T does indeed have an active display. The pen requires a AAAA battery, and digitizes with about 1/4" air gap. However, the default operation requires quite a bit of pressure to actually draw, which makes it really inconsistent, even completely unusable in any application that doesn't have pressure sensitivity. Even if I can solve this, it only has 255 pressure levels, so I suspect it will never truly deliver an intuitive tactile experience. I'm not certain if I can use other pens with this display though. Wish me luck.

I sold my MacBook for an iPad. I needed a tablet for study and portability. I was confused after my decision. I used my iPad for a week or so but still I was double minded. But after buying a rubber tipped stylus the other day, I am quite hooked to my iPad now. I am not confused anymore about selling my MacBook. I mean to say is it is so convenient to use iPad with a stylus than using your fingers all the time. The typing feels so easy. It’s just a different and exciting experience altogether. I have Joyroom DR01 (rubber tipped) Passive Capacitive Stylus. The only gripe I have with it is the grip, it’s not that comfortable to hold. I am now looking for a rubber tipped stylus which is comfortable to hold. Can you please tell me what’s the name of the last one to the right most side in the start of the video? And can you or anyone please recommend any good brand rubber tipped stylus? I don’t use it for drawing at all. Just for touch, typing and occasional notes.

    .
The right-click could almost sell me on an active stylus (which I didn't know existed), let alone 'eraser mode'. The preview-cursor is both awesome and kinda annoying looking, I can't decide.
    .
I was just trying to find a fine-tip stylus because as you note @ 4:40 the stylus tip often blocks my vision of the area I'm trying to work on, and got overwhelmed with the sheer variety of options when I found your video.
    .
As I finished typing ^ the above, you got to the pdonut part, and the disc-tip stylus = YES! I *knew* someone had to be the same kind of nerd as me (but more educated and experienced) and would want to solve this problem so other frustrated nerds could benefit from their troubleshooting!
    .
Thank you for this clear and detailed but also well-paced (not slow!) video! I sure hope you didn't spend too much on these products, but that you got to borrow them or they were sent to you for review. But if you took the hit to your wallet, I am even more awed and grateful for your sacrifice!

I use the free small StraightTalk rubber stylus’s
Here are the problems with this product (as you would expect since they’re free)
They are so small that you can’t exactly get a grip.
The rubber tip is so thin that it makes a hole after 3 hours of use
There’s a pen on the other end and if you accidentally take the pens cap off, it won’t be put back on right and will move profusely as you draw, eventually you have moved it so much that the whole stylus body is taken off. Of course all you have to do to get it back on is to twist it on again.
The rubber tip seems to be painted black because the paint comes off from the friction and will cover your tablets screen with it. I’ve tested this with my finger and it rubs off with just a tap! Even new stylus’s that are warmed by only one degree for 3 minutes have the same paint problem.

I know that the "capacitive" stylus of Samsung, it's not capacitive, but it's a wacom compatible pen and it has a "passive" technology, used in most of the wacom tablets ;)
So I think it's not an active neither capacitive stylus

  • @T1k3mys0n

    To my understanding
    - Active Stylus will have a cursor when in close proximity to supported screen. Like that 3:05
    - Capacitive Stylus is rubber tipped but there is also capacitive stylus with pointy ballpoint like tip and usually has disc, like in 5:41
    - Now this 3rd type is what confused me , an ACTIVE CAPACITIVE STYLUS, it has rechargeable battery too. Is it more sensitive and easier to register on the screen ? or what ? I don't understand this one, I found quite a lot of this in online stores and it's quite expensive.
I am currently using capacitive stylus with pointy tip with disc like in 5:41 for playing Nintendo DS emulator (Drastic), but it's not very sensitive sometimes it doesn't register the tap, but it is not that bad I can even use it for playing Trauma Center, the surgeon game on DS and do surgery using this stylus, it's just sometimes it won't register so I can't aim for better rank when racing against time doing the surgery. I hope it's usable for later chapter with harder and time critical missions
Funny thing when I was playing the real DS back in the days, I often used my finger nail to tap, but now that I use emulator+android where finger is the main supported touch input , I miss the use of stylus. Using stylus is much more accurate than finger. and it can pinpoint tap to a very small area on the screen like maybe 3mm x 3mm maybe even less. Both stylus and finger supported should be made more common and cheap, it's the best of both world.

i may be a little late but the 3rd type of capacitive stylus the one with the battery uses the battery power to generate an electric field in the tip to fool the device into thinking a finger is on the screen which allows it to have a fine tip and no disk

I am looking for a precise and cheap stylus. I saw this one 5:00 a lot but I thought it would be uncomfortable and wouldn't work well. Your video helped me choose it. I'll edit this comment once I get it and tell if it feels nice not to draw with a finger. Xd
Edit: Just got it tomorrow. Overall it's smooth, the screen reads it well. You can hold it up to around 45° to your screen. Its accurate. Overall i really enjoy using it. Its a bit smaller than i thought - around 15cm. Its comfortable to hold but its. Slippery(?) Not in the sense that you can easily drop it but its between mat and smooth, and it feels kind of weird when i slide a finger across it. Nothing negative, just something i would think I'll mention. You don't notice it as much after some time of drawing.

    • @teohyc

+Bob Whiteside Touch screen laptops (not those foldable 2-in-1) may not work well with stylus. There might be broken lines when drawing with stylus. That's because they are design for touch and tap. I've used a stylus on XPS and had that broken line issue.
