I think you are moving away from Advanced and into Master level. An advanced player, to me, would have instrument fluency and high strength in a style. Mastery delves into branching beyond into multiple style fluency. So, an ability to go from say, fingerstyle into a flat pick bluegrass. Fluency of all modes counts too. I think you are moving into that territory of skill.
Many of the most admired performers really only have mastery of one style, but there are those mutants out there like Billy Strings, Malmsteen and John 5, who might be famous for only one style, but who are surprisingly strong in multiple styles.
Your claim to fame may be as an instructor, but you are becoming a Master.

FEEDBACK: When showing your audience how to play a song, at least for ME, it would be a huge benefit if you could tell us what key it's in, what the progression is in both the verse and chorus, what scale is used in the solo, and MOST of all, WHY. I'm sure there are many that just want the meat and potatoes, but, for those that want to truly understand the guitar and how to be MUSICAL when playing, I think the above would be of great benefit. Thanks for everything you do and giving your audience the chance to give our opinions and feedback.

Interesting that Marty hasn't responded to this message as I would think that everything that you ask to be included, key, progression etc is exactly what the student guitar player needs to improve

Marty has a few theory videos He also offers more vids and even in depth lessons you can pay for on his website that are like 20+ hours long.
There’s other youtubers out there who have videos on it... People go to college for music theory. So it’s an in dept and way too crazy for Marty to explain in a 10minute video when he’s just trying to get people to get up, play and have fun.

I definitely agree with you, however especially with a channel like Marty Music, i dont think people are exactly coming to get a full analysis of the whole song, rather most people (I belive mostly "Begginers") come just to learn the tunes they love and not think about it too much, this might especially be overwhelming if your a begginer and you might belive that because you dont understand these concepts you cant play the song (WHICH IS NOT THE CASE). Also it would just make for a long video that could become boring to most people that just want to learn the song.

I think there's a category in between intermediate and advanced that I would call "accomplished" or perhaps "sessioned" where you have mastered all of the elements that you name as advanced but have not actually created that "nitch" of creativity that makes you recognizable whether you're playing the Star Spangled Banner or Mary Had a Little Lamb. The accomplished guitarist can get on a stage with almost anyone and blend in, accompany, play along side almost anyone at the drop of a hat but may not have taken any particular style to that level of "unmistakable ". I think you can be accomplished without being advanced but probably not the other way around. I mean the following statementwith the utmost respect. "Marty is accomplished. Hendrix was advanced." Thanks Marty for all you do. I have learned more from you in the past few years than at any similar time frame ever.
I hear you on this, but most skills of any sort are measured in ‘beginner’ ‘intermediate’ and ‘advanced’. I would say there are probably hundreds of thousands of advanced guitar players in the world, but only one Hendrix. In this case Hendrix and his ilk would easily carry a different level like ‘distinguished’ or ‘legend’.
@@saramulry I guess you can name it what you like but there's a difference between learning a skill and creating a palate that no one one else can even use, let alone, re-create. If you choose "advanced" then "master", that's fine by me but my point is that unlike learning a normal skillset, music, and all art for that matter have one more level that some can never get to no matter how long they try. There are exquisite paintings of flowers but Matisse "Poppies" and Van Gogh "Sunflowers" are different levels of expression that can't be taught or learned.
There are a whole lot of what you call "accomplished" players out there and a lot of them might be in your favorite bands. They may not know what a mode is, or when they're using an inversion. I know players who can't tell you want key they're playing in, but they're really good and really creative, and are accomplished in terms of writing and recording songs and have toured the planet a bunch of times. The can make the sounds they want to make, but would be lost if asked to sit in with a jazz combo, metal band, or anything different than what they do. Can't really call them "advanced" because their scope is too narrow and unique to themselves, but they're still good enough that people pay to hear them.
@@saddestchord7622 There are lots of musicians out there that have a following and fans that are not what I would consider advanced nor accomplished musicians. My view on this has nothing to do being a fan. One thing I have found over the years is a misconception that people seem to have. "I like it therefore it's quality". This opinion is not only incorrect and self serving but denigrates art as a whole. Best example off the top of my head were punk bands. I listened to many that I really enjoyed and loved partying to but I would never put them into any category anywhere near advanced. I can listen to a band and enjoy what they are doing while knowing that there is nothing particularly advanced musically about it. I like some bands that I know aren't technically good and contrarily, there are musicians that I know are technically proficient that I don't like. I think you are confusing opinion with genuine proficiency but many people, IMO, do that. "I like it so it's quality" or "I don't like it so it's not quality" is a prevalent opinion among many that I think is incorrect. Equally true I believe is that there are incredibly adept musicians who can play anything off of sheet music but couldn't create a child's limerick if their life depended on it. Different issue.😆
@@kevinshea3028 I know this was posted a year ago, but I have a response... in my very humble opinion I think there are many advanced guitarists out there that may have the skill level of a master... and who even have a unique masterful palate few can recreate... but are not famous, not considered a legend, never got recognition or money, and the only reason people don't acknowledge their talent is because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time for all of that. someone can be stand out more than Hendrix in the way they play but they'll never be seen the way Hendrix was because they didn't have the money or the culture or the socialites around them to get recognized like that. so I guess to round this post out I'll end it with: so it really is just beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
I think I was an intermediate player for years, until I went back to collage in 2015 and started studying jazz & classical guitar. I'm not a shredding or technical player, but my dynamics, my understanding of chord theory to create efficient complex & necessary chords, and my ability to transpose on the spot is where I excel are what push me to an advanced player. At this point though, I find myself humbled and always looking for new challenges.

That’s sick. Definitely need to understand chord theory more because it will allow me to play the notes that belong in chords for soloing. I’ve been practicing modes and legato technique for almost a year now so I can be a master player in my room.

I think what your talking about is the "flow state" or "being in the zone." When you are immersed to the point of almost automatic thinking. All of your actions become natural and unforced.

I agree with everything you said. In my playing I always try to strive for learning new concepts and I like how you touched on that. There are so many “advanced” ways of playing that I think people overlook, (for example Wes Montgomery , Segovia, Django etc.) All different, yet many people don’t know because they box themselves in with rock. Love your channel and what you do. If someone ever asks about where to learn guitar I always recommend checking out your videos. My sincere best!
I have been playing guitar for 14 years or so now, and I have to say the thing that helped me the most in my playing abilities was teaching others what I was doing and WHY I was doing it. Being a guitar instructor really opens your eyes to the world of music!

Great talk Marty, stimulating and also a great place to gather my thoughts and goals for what I want to accomplish with my current guitar path.
This is one thing that really helped me advance after learning some basic scales and barre chords. Every time I would learn a solo, I would simultaneously review/practice the scale and barre chords that fit that solo. After doing this a few times something really clicked for me and I was able to see how everything I had learned fit together.

Hey Marty! Haven’t been to the channel in a while but about a decade ago I had basically given up on guitar until I found your channel. I’m really glad to see you’re still doing so well and the channel is only growing bigger. Thanks for everything you do, man.
This is an awesome topic, because I think a person can become super advanced in a couple of those areas that are really interesting to them, and still be a little deficient in others. Take me for instance. I always wanted to play lead. I jumped right in learning blues, and made a ton of progress. Within 2 years I could play steppin out, and hideaway note for note from the Clapton/blues breakers album. I kept on from there learning all the scales I could, and how they relate as modes, etc. Have a pretty good theory grasp, and good enough feel/rhythm that I can play well with others. I’ve realized though, that from not learning all that many riffs/songs, I kinda suck at recognizing how to jump in on the right beat. Also, ear training never was really a priority, other that what I picked up just from playing. So, now I feel a little like a beginner again working on those two things that I overlooked for years. Each path is a little different I guess.?
Great stuff Marty! As Miles Davis said "Master the instrument, master the music, then forget all about that and just play!"
A couple of additional things that might help folks in their journey... record yourself! Whether you're in a band or playing alone, record your playing so you can critique it from a different perspective. You'll be surprised.... "Wow that sounded really good right there!" along with "Ouch I butchered that transition and didn't even realize it!"
Playing with others (especially musicians better than you) can be huge.
As Marty said, always be learning. You might be able to rip through a harmonic minor scale at warp speed but can you do vibrato on one note that will make everyone stand up and notice (a'la Buddy Guy or BB King)? Always be listening and don't let yourself be jaded by styles of music. Yeah you may be totally into metal but you can learn a lot from the country players too for example.
Finally be a musician not just a guitar player. Feel and touch is where it's at. Use technique to augment your music, not be the focus of it.
I’m self-and-UA-cam taught & honestly have no idea how to “rate” myself, so this video helped. Mostly when things are brought up that I’m lost on-I realize what I need to start learning next 😅

Hi Marty ..your lessons improved my playing ..why! Because it's easy to follow your explanations during the lessons. Especially when you use the looper. Inspiration with a "basic" lesson inspired me to make the song a part of myself and easy to memorize. Blues/funk/rock / electric/arcoustic is in scope during my journey....your visualization is perfect..please continue!! Good job.
One thing that I missed in my journey causing me to get stuck at one "level" for some time is ear training. There's probably also several aspects of being an advanced player - theory, technique, speed, chords etc., Few of those I think I am pretty good at, but one thing I missed and would like to learn is being able to listen to a song, and then pick up a guitar and play along with it instantly. That's the dream!!

First off, I would like to thank you for all of your help over the past year or 2 since I originally found your channel. I was never interested in being a great guitarist. I learned guitar because I enjoy writing music, but over the years as happens I accidentally got pretty good. I never thought of myself as good though I was just a writer who learned out of necessity. I would learn a cover song or 2 here and there as I think most do. My point to this long comment is that watching this video just reaffirmed what others have said about me being an advanced player yet I never saw until this video. By giving me a break down of what makes a player a certain level. I also fell in love with playing and find a way to play everyday, and when possible for hours a day. I again just appreciate the help and guidance I have gotten from your channel in fine tuning or figuring out different songs, and now for the ability to know where I stand as a player.
I picked up a guitar 45 years ago, still consider myself an intermediate player but my goal when I pick it up was just to be able to play some Beatles songs... I reached my goal and then some.

I like to think I'm intermediate. I only do downstrokes when I play lead and sometimes bang into other strings while soloing. I'm getting better at barre chords, though to change from a F#m to a B is a bit of a challenge. I can just about play Purple Haze. I need to learn to mute better...especially playing loud, and wish that my hand positioning was better. Other than that, I'm not too bad! 😀
It's cool to hear you talking about this. I really feel I'm pushing into the upper levels of intermediate playing based on your idea of what means.

There are 3 stages of Motor Skill Acquisition: Cognitive, Associative, Autonomous. Unfortunately the 2nd stage takes forever and most of us never get to 3 in most disciplines.
Thanks you @Compass2101 for jogging my memory on where I had seen this. A summary of this is discussed on one page of the book "Moonwalking with Einstein". Cognitive is like the first couple days learning how to drive a car (you have to think of everything, even how to put the key in the ignition, where to position your feet to operate the pedals, etc, etc.). Associative is after you have learned how to drive the car but surprises still "surprise" you. And, Autonomous is when the brain appears to respond without conscious thought (Ie.. a race car driver is about to be in an accident, he just figures out what his/her next actions will be without really "thinking" about it. Apologies I do not know what exact page this was on in the book. @Marty Music
When I was younger the last word in guitar was Slayer, Pantera, EVH etc. Now as I’m older I think that Dave Gilmour is one of the most incredible guitarists ever. He can play quite basic pieces and often quite clean, but his tone and bends just make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. When I look back at all the guitarists that inspired me early on, it just sounds like guitar olympics now. Look at all the timeless and emotive songs that John Fogerty wrote. That’s playing to me. That’s a good guitarist. Not just being able to throw a million notes per second in to everything

I ran in to a brick wall when I started learning modes. Was able to memorize shapes. But I have no idea how to use them. I can’t get them to sound right. So I just stay with the ol’ reliable minor pentatonic. Just living here on my plateau.
You’re not alone there
Some pro guitar players have made a great living just using the minor/major pentatonic scales. Also, James Taylor never learned how to read music, or learned modes, and he did alright. :)
It’s not the scale or the shape that makes a mode sound like a mode, it’s the chord progression that you play underneath the scale. Try playing a simple Am to D loop (or find one here on UA-cam) and play G major or Am pentatonic over it. You will sound like A Dorian. Then play a D to C progression and do the same. You’ll sound like D mixolydian. There’s a great Signals Music studio video where he plays the same C major scale over different progressions so you can hear modes.
I find that modes sort of a 'feel' or 'mood' to them. Phrygian with the flat-2nd always sounds kind of exotic. Dorian sounds modal, a little medieval to my ears. Lydian with sharp-4th bright happy major. And what might be helpful is looking for the "key" notes that help define mode. Like a mixolydian is just major with flat-7th, so kind of 'focus' on the 7th to bring out the sound...?

I feel comfortable with a lot of theory after a year of grinding at it. I understand the modes and inversions and triad voicings, but I need to move them from “knowing” to applying them very casually. Learning a huge set list of songs note for note and thinking about the choices critically has really helped solidify the concepts. It’s coming along slowly, but I am noticing the difference!
Marty is the only UA-cam guitar player that I have ever actually learnt things from. Now I’m at least intermediate. THANK YOU MARTY

Great points Marty. It comes down to musicality, adaptability, and being able to learn new styles, riffs, chords etc... I am at the point where I can either figure out songs by ear or watch a quick UA-cam video and be ready to go. I think the best learning experience is playing with a band and doing live performance. For example, I spent almost 3 years with a Beatles cover band and was able to build up my chops and chord repertoire rapidly.
Wow very in depth explanation; I appreciate this thank you. I am 100% self taught, and I have been watching various videos like this to help understand what i should be learning next, and I am happy to say everything you have mentioned I understand/already do. I definitely agree with the logic that you’re always learning, and you’re lifelong student of guitar, whether that’s a beginning advanced player or beginning master player, there is always more to learn. I got to the point in my playing where I decided to take on Jazz, and that just unlocked a WHOLE OTHER world that I didn’t even know existed on the guitar, that really goes past the pentatonic and modes, but explores melodic and harmonic minor and diminished scales and shows how phrasing can be built with various degrees of a key and relative and parallel keys as well as arpeggios. The different cadences in various progressions and progressions outside major minor. When I got to this point it unlocked an infinite amount of creativity and a way of understanding I never thought possible. I thought after I learned a little more than what you covered here I thought I was done, but no when I got into jazz I realized I only had scratched the surface and all the Knowledge I had learned was all prerequisites to be able to study beginner jazz theory. The guitar playing journey - I feel never really ends; and it is 100% about the journey and not the destination.

Yes - you can be a technical player who can play anything and obviously you’d be considered advanced. In my opinion that’s not as impressive as someone who is using the guitar as their voice. Originality is what draws me to music but that’s just 1 perspective. Create new music people! Please.

I've been playing for just over 2 years now and love all these tutorials.. I like all kinds of different music so choose to play all sorts so that's quite difficult.. From country and western to rock to fingerstyle pop.. For me, just being able to pick up a guitar and actually sound pretty good does for me.. I've been playing for 8 years but I still feel like a beginner.
I learned so much watching Marty on UA-cam, but during a lockdown I purchased Marty's overdrive pedal (which has the sweetest sound), and got all his courses on Marty Music included. I have learned so much more in the last 9 months with those courses than in the last 10 years. If you want to get better, trust in Marty, those courses are amazing. Love ya Marty, keep rocking dude!!
Great video, Marty. I think conceptually, I fit the advanced category but there is a gap between what I understand and what I can actually play. You talked about it briefly with playing favorite songs and some solos. I can play rhythm accompaniment and lead though not well enough. If I’m going to learn a solo, I usually need a guy like you to teach it to me. To be advanced, I think you should ask yourself these and other questions...
Can you count? Triplets, 16ths, odd time signatures?
Can you take a lead sheet like from Ultimate Guitar, make corrections and learn the song?
Are you able to work out simple songs and melodies by ear and take a chord progression and figure out where the changes are?
Can you smoothly add lead fills to your rhythm to play? -Not necessarily improvised
Can you play a song in a different position?
Can you recognize and add dynamics?
Can you effectively use a capo?
Are you able to play in different styles whether it be genre or something like fingerstyle, hybrid or flatpicking?
The answer for me is “so-so”. I would like to shorten the learning curve when playing new pieces, feel like I can play more than just what I’m currently working on, hit those damned chord tones in an improvised solo and expand my vocabulary of melodic ideas.
I would describe my skill level as “ not good.”

Thanks Marty for a very in depth opinion and explanation. Im now convincedI’m still a beginner, 6 month into my journey. I however am not discouraged by that. Check it out! I was 14 when first I began to learn guitar playing. For one reason or another I put it down and never touched it again. I’m 73 now and have been enjoying my new adventure the past 6 months, thanks to your generosity in part. I am a big fan and hope you continue with this forum. Thanks and God bless!

I've been playing on and off since I was 14. Now I've decided to get the most out my guitar, instead of just playing the same 10 songs I've played for years. I'd probably class myself as a low intermediate. Open chords, bar chords I can play all day... but thats about it. I want to get face to face lessons but with COVID thats just not possible right now. I'll try (as you said) to learn a few new things (possibly triads and scales) but I really think I need someone to evaluate my ability and tell me where to focus.
Ok, gonna try some courses now... Your classes are great and I am gonna buy a mug!
Great info. I tend to agree with the list but would throw in Dominant 7 and 9 shapes, including m7b5 to round out the blues aspect.

Like the point you made about the drive to get better and not being contempt with where you're currently at. Just got back into guitar a few months back and have drastically improved from where I was before. Funny part is I've realized I'm not all that good, when before I thought I was decent because I could play a couple cool licks. Gonna start diving into theory and continue to practice daily, time will always yield results! Love your channel brother you've been a great teacher to me and countless others, you're much appreciated my man

I guess my answer is a common one which is advanced at times and down right beginner at others. You get out of it what you put in. And I think that notion holds truest when it comes to learning the guitar. I have picked quite a bit from your tutorials Marty. Thanks man 🎸

I'm a ln intermediate with 35yrs experience. I learn something everytime I lift the guitar. That's why I love it, it never gets old, never boring.
I likely wouldn't be any kind of guitar player without my son cheering and playing along and Marty's super fun lessons. Wish I could do more to support you bud. Thanks a bunch. After 2 years I fall into a top intermediate fase.

I like what you said about learning a chord a week. I know all the major, minor and a lot of 7ths in the open position, bar chords and quite e few power chords. But 9ths and other coloured chords? - one a week and you do get there.

Nice Can of Worms ya opened up there. Rythm seems to be the key for me then everything else. With my teacher doing alot of Jimmy Reed and Otis Rush rythms has opened my eyes. Tapping my foot keeping good time. Thats made me a better guitar player.. Well right along with watching Tons of Marty. Thanks..
