I love that even with his decades of playing Justin can still relate to people like myself who started not too long ago. I'm glad that after watching this i can be at peace with continuing to play what i enjoy, instead of worrying about all this theory and scales that people with egos tell me i must learn. Exactly why i quit piano, i fell into the grading system and got pushed and pushed to learn bs scales and music that i wasn't interested in. Not this time! You're a top guy Justin, thank you so much!

"Struggle with playing good time but naturally be finding good melodies" seriously hit the nail on the head for me and my music! I really love the philosophical mindset Justin's been championing lately about independence with guitar. While we need discipline at times, it's so important to not be coerced into practices that don't inspire you. Having a goal even if small or tentative gives direction and making things more fulfilling. Applies to a lot in life I'd say. Keep up the awesome videos, it's inspirational fuel for me lately!

Just can’t say enough about JustinGuitar….his style, fun attitude and sense of humor, and ability to boil down both theory and practice into a productive learning experience has made this 6 month learning re-entry into guitar a fantastic experience. Not quite at the point of “true intermediate,” but I’m close. More importantly, I’ve had fun along the way and continue to find the passion to keep going. Many thanks!

I spent 7 months on Fender Play following their regimented curriculum. It wasn't a waste of time, but since switching to in person lessons in January, my playing abilities have really improved. My instructor gives me a new piece of music every week and tells me to work on everything. Having so much material to constantly practice keeps everything fresh. A much better learning experience for me.

That’s a interesting point Justin. I’m still halfway through Grade 1 and I sometimes get myself wondering when I will be able to learn the songs I like most. I already tried to learn guitar in the past and gave up exactly because of that. I wasn’t having fun. Now I’m not making the same mistake. What I’m doing is: I follow your course regular practice exercise and related songs every day but once and a while I give myself permission to learn something new that would be covered on grade 2 or 3 maybe because this is the missing piece for learning the song I love. I’m not sure if this is a good practice or not, but hopefully this will keep me motivated and keep going through grades 2,3,4 etc.
Thanks for the awesome content as always Justin

A good , and honest, chat Justin. I love Country rock and appparently i'm a good finger player. I never used a pick for more than 20 years. Right now I'm recovering from a broken wrist ( left) and it sometimes seems impossible as I know in my head what I can't get my wrist to do. I have been playing since 1969

Great advice. I started learning in high school almost two decades ago and stopped playing after about a year because I was discouraged with the lack of progress and hated playing Old MacDonald or things. Picked it up again last year and am loving it and progressing much faster than I did when I was young because I’m playing things I enjoy.

Was trying to learn Dorian and Mixolydian and it was work. For a couple of months, I didn't want to pick up a guitar. I learned that every once in a while you need some Cat Scratch Fever or Roadhouse Blues. Your video was a huge breath of fresh air, and made me realize it isn't just me. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this Justin. I am only three months in. I go to group classes and the instructor is pushing me with barre chords which I am struggling with. What works for me is small, gradual progress, baby steps. It's working for me playing the stuff I want to learn, not what I am being pushed to learn. Thanks again for your videos. It really helped me today 😊

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  Рік тому

Group classes must be great fun and mixing with other learners very beneficial. 3 months in is, imho, too soon for barre chords used in songs however. Check the full structure of the Beginner Course here. www.justinguitar.com/site-map-and-lesson-structure
Yes, F barre chord is introduced in Grade 2 followed immediately by F chord cheats. Because it is a very difficult chord to learn and incorporating into songs takes a long time. A series of lessons on barre chords using the E-shape are only introduced in grade 4.
      Cheers 😊

Everything you say in this video is so important. I used to feel a bit disappointed with my playing till I decided to work on my rhythm and focus mostly on rock. I decided to improve the things that I really need: major and minor open chords, 7th chords, power chords, major and minor pentatonic and major and minor scales, mainly for riffs. And that's mostly all the knowledge I've acquiered so far and now I'm just working out the rhythm part of songs that I like and composing my own tunes in a similar style. And I feel much more accomplished.

My inspiration to play guitar is to play rock lead guitar with a little bit of John Mayer style blues. Though I don't mind learning rhythm guitar as a beginner. Learning lead guitar especially the more advanced styles seems like an impossible task to do at this point.

    absolute truth.
Also, don't beat yourself up if you don't get in the chair everyday, although you really should try.
I used to get all pissed at myself for not practicing, but then I learned to tell my self: Just do ten minutes of finger stretching and then you can go do "X". and I'd wind up doing two hours and really enjoying it.
So, it has been really great learning from Justin (I'm 70 and I started about ten years or so ago with no experience at all.) and I still consider myself a beginner in many ways although my playing level is a really lazy Intermediate.
I have no goal but to play to enjoy making music for myself. I mostly do fingerstyle now, because that is what appeals to me.
If you follow Justin's course, you will suddenly find yourself playing music you only used to just sing along with the radio on.
Am I any good? Nah, I suck at it, but it is okay because I enjoy what I do.
As long as it's fun, you will keep doing it. The minute it becomes a chore or something you don't like doing, you are going to put your guitar down and never pick it up again.
So thank you Justin And all your crew for giving me the help I needed to get going and to learn to plonk out tunes that keep my mind sharp and makes me keep going everyday.
(Want to know which guitarist inspire me?
    Nick Drake
    Townes Van Zandt
    Gram Parsons
    Manitas del Plata
    Django Reinhardt
    and another dozen or so)
    so thanks again Justin.

Im still a beginner after playing every day for 15 years. Still trying to change between "easy" open chords fast enough. After 15 years, I don’t think I will ever be able to play a single song without messing things up. I guess some people just can’t learn...

I watch Justin videos while getting ads to not learn via UA-cam.

Thanks for the great advice. It seems that music is like math, there is no end, it is infinite.

I'm all over the place, not enjoying it much right now. I never had much instruction. I don't feel I have ever had a good practice routine, and I always resort back to trying to learn lots of songs I want to sing and then get frustrated with the lack of abilities to do anything well on the guitar.

I been playing for 5 months now , I really want to play the African style but to play it you have to learn arpeggios but I find it very hard what should I do?

Hey Joël, Justion doesn't have specific lessons on that but from what I'm fmailiar with, I'd say your chord work and scales as the base, just as in typical "western" music. But, you're right, often it is a mix of scales and arpeggio's There is a lot to explore about this on the website! | Check: www.justinguitar.com/advanced_search?q=arpeggio to get an idea! | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide, Approved Teacher & Community Moderator
