  • Installing a dual isolated battery system using a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/24-15 charge controller. The second battery is a 24V LiFePO4 with 75Ah to run my Engle compressor fridge.

    So what is the spare battery charging off of? There is no alternator on the hybrid Tundra's.

      It is charging of the 13.5V provided to run all 12V systems plus charging the starter battery. Traditional alternator or not, that power is provided.

    Wouldn't lithium-phosphate be a little dangerous to run in a truck, especially exposed like? Phosphate is dangerous when it burns

      It is Lithium Iron Phosphate. It’s one of the safest Lithium batteries. Anything Cobalt oxide or Manganese Cobalt oxide would be the dangerous kind with high thermal runaway behavior.

    Thank you for this video. Have been planning the same thing for some time.
    Since there is no alternator and the 12v is charged via the dc converter from hybrid system can you verify if the smart alternator detection keeps the victron charging when the engine shuts off when going into ev mode? Or will this even happen if it needs to provide consistent power to 12v at this point?

      The voltage stays steady at 13.5V on the Victron App even in EV mode. It really works perfectly in my case. I upgraded the wire to 8AWG and better fuse rated 50A. My previous setup got too hot drawing 30A constant.

      Thank you for that confirmation! 2 last questions. Did you have to run a 3rd wire for the smart alternator detection or does it get its voltage readout with just your pos and neg connections to the 12v truck battery?
      Last, do you know at what amperage the truck dc converter can supply to the 12v truck battery? Trying to determine at what point is to much amp load pulling from the 12v for dc dc and other connections such as lights winch etc.?

      @@VI510N You don't need a third wire, the smart battery detection runs off of the input voltage. It is also adjustable in the menu just in case. Mine works perfectly with the default settings.
      I do not know the maximum amperage of the 12V system, but I am sure it is ample.
