  • If you’re looking for a delicious curry, this recipe is just the one for you!
    I used Sri Lankan roasted curry powder, but if you don’t have it, you can use any store bought curry powder.
    As you all know Sri Lankans like their spices especially chilli powder. So adjust the chilli as per your spice tolerance.
    Ingredients
    For the meatballs:
    500g minced meat (chicken, beef, pork or lamb)
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
    3 garlic cloves, chopped
    1 egg
    ½ cup breadcrumbs
    1 tablespoon lemon/lime juice
    For the curry:
    3 tablespoons oil
    4 cardamom pods
    4 cloves
    4cm piece cinnamon
    1 curry leaves sprig
    1 onion, chopped
    3cm piece ginger, chopped
    3 garlic cloves, chopped
    1 tomato, chopped
    2 teaspoons chilli powder
    ½ teaspoon pepper
    ½ teaspoon turmeric
    Salt to taste
    ¼ cup water
    2 cups coconut milk
    2 teaspoons roasted curry powder
    Method
    Place all the ingredients for the meatballs in a large bowl. Mix them well till they get well combined.
    Wet your hands with little bit of cold water. Roll into balls. Place them in a dish. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and place the dish in the refrigerator.
    Heat a large sauce pan over medium heat. Add oil.
    Once the oil is hot, add cardamom pods, cloves, cinnamon and curry leaves. Cook for about 1 minute till the spices flavour the oil.
    Add chopped onions and cook until onion is translucent.
    Add chopped ginger, garlic and tomato. Give it a good mix and cook for about 5 minutes.
    Add chilli powder, pepper, turmeric and salt. Mix well. Cook until the mixture thickens and lose the raw flavour. Mix constantly, this will prevent spices sticking to the bottom of the pan.
    Add water and cook for 2-3 minutes.
    Once the water starts to boil and thicken, add coconut milk. Mix well. Add salt if required. Allow it to cook and come to a simmer.
    Add roasted curry powder. Mix well and simmer for a minute or two.
    Place in the meatballs. Cover and cook on low heat for 5 minutes.
    Turn the meatballs to get them well coated with the curry.
    Cover once again and cook for 15 minutes or until the meatballs are fully cooked.
    Garnish with chopped coriander leaves/cilantro. Serve with rice.
