Only information i could find online (including outside youtube) which shows the internals of a bendix. This is a smaller variant of what i have on a kawasaki jet ski, but i bet the design is the same. Those 3 keyed weights you show probably increase clamping force. As the starter spins up you don't want the full force (torque) until the teeth are fully engaged. Any spring holding them back is "tuned" to a certain rpm. Pretty sure this is what failed on my jet ski, just not sure it's worth pulling the engine out to get to the thing. 18 year old ski. Had engine out once before. Salt water is not kind to these things.

Yes - totally agree. Kawasaki jet skis are some of the best. I have 2 of them, but on a lake. Salt water is a losing battle. I wish you the best.
