I think every time I see Jimmy in these more long form interviews, that he is a real student of his craft, he seems like he really studies historical comedians and works hard at his stuff. He's not just a "funny guy who tells jokes" he really has studied a lot of historical comedians, and has a process. Yet he makes it look super natural and off the cuff.
He always gives it up to the originals and his influences. Really awesome and cool to see. I recently became a big fan of his in the past couple of years
He definitely is a "real student of his craft". Check out his book, "The Naked Jape: Uncovering The Hidden World Of Jokes", it's a really fascinating and entertaining book about the history of jokes and how they work behind the scenes.
As a comedian Jimmy gets a lot of undeserved flack in the UK. Honestly, we don't always deserve him.
He's a very intelligent comedian, and he also knows what sells to which audiences.
i like comedians that give off a more “effortless” vibe instead of meticulous broken down to a science joke teller. like norm would bomb on purpose if he thought the joke was funny this guy couldn’t fathom doing that
9:52 “People don’t want more time, they want more memories.” WOW
Jimmy seems to be the real deal. Empathetic, itelligent, kind and funny.
Awesome.
You forgot one more word ..
Cynical..
Jimmy Carr is a treasure. And we still need full episodes with video, anywhere.
I always figured it would be on Sirius XM but haven’t paid for a subscription to test that theory
@pendragon6207 @dowhatiwantc7637 I just looked for it on Sirius. The full episode's there but it's audio only.
@@dowhatiwantc7637 I'd definitely pay for a subscription if it had video for entire episodes.
I love that Jimmy went to bat for Emo Phillips. Criminally underrated standup comic.
3:30 this part here, there is a play in Ex Yugoslavia, a comedy called "Radovan Treći" (Radovan The Third) which stars Zoran Radmilović, one of the greats of Yugoslavian theather and films. The play was acted 299 times and two times was it filmed, once on its 250 show which was televised and put on VHS tapes and another time amateur shot on its 281. They say that every time the brilliance of Zoran Radmilović was different and every show was different because of how he acted. It's a banger filled with humor and breaking the show to complete laughtee of the public watching it.
Anthony Jeselnik seems like he'd be right up Jimmy's comedy alley.
Connan on "8 out of 10 cats does countdown" when??
Great idea. I think it might happen. Conan is travelling more now, and he is more willing to come to the UK and Ireland. He will have to come to Manchester, where Cats Does Countdown is taped.
I dont think Conan is enough of a team player to make something like that work. He'd just take over and it'd be such a drag.
Would love that but I don’t know channel 4 can afford him. Maybe Graham Norton with his BBC money.
To be honest every year I’m worried that something bad will happen to channel 4 and it’s brilliant programming
@@mattnesspl6785 Like all channels it is going through a rough patch, but just look at BBC and ITV, both having problems. ITV losing £1 million on Mr Bates drama and ad revenue falling. BBC with their own massive issues including the royal charter ending by 2028 and the anti BBC attitude of a lot.
Not the biggest fan of Jimmy's stand up but could listen to these convos all day
The fact he really took the time to break down his method of composing his jokes and coming up with his routine I felt went under the radar of appreciation... those are great tips for upcoming comics... most artist don't give u those gems. Thankyou
I've been a fan of Jimmy Carr since the first time I saw him, because I love his comedy and his laugh brings me joy. Every time I see him do an interview, I become even more of a fan of him as a human being.
i was lucky enough to watch him perform his 90 minutes in jakarta back in january, and what he said at 0:51 is so true. he was so quick and smooth, and it does feel like you're getting your money's worth because you get to hear what seems like a gajillion jokes in less than 2 hours
Always great to hear people giving props to Bill Hicks and Emo Phillips. Saw him with Weird Al, still great!
can you guys just put the whole podcast on youtube?
My two favorite comedians talking about their craft. This was amazing
CONAN PLEASE CONSIDER BEING TASKMASTER USA PLEASE
Omg yes yes yes yes yes!!!!
with Jack MacBrayer as his assistant?? come ON
That's what I keep saying!!
Who'll assist though? Andy? Sona? Schlansky? I want them all!
That would be perfect casting!
Omg. It is so obvious!!!
It takes about 6 presses to skip the ad
Extremely insightful stuff!! As an aspiring comic it gives me appreciation of the knowledge and experience it takes to masters this craft
My favorite thing in joke humor are the callbacks. Especially the callbacks to previous shows.
One of my favorites from Steven Wright is, "The harmonica sounds amazing."
I saw a really great performance by Louis CK where he made the entire 45 minute set seem like it was just one long rambling joke by using a massive callback at the end. When he filmed it later as a special it didnt quite work. He really had written perfectly when I saw it. It was a triumph of writing.
@@patreekotime4578 That reminds me of something that James Acaster might do.
@@pleappleappleap Well thanks for the reminder.... now Ive just been down a 2 hour James Acaster rabbit hole.
Mine is "What do you add to instant water?"
@@pleappleappleapI was just about to say James Acaster. He did a bunch of call-back jokes in his Repertoire series. It's four connected stand-up specials on Netflix.
Wow, shout out to Rita Rudner, I loved her as a kid
The lighting is remarkably better on this episode than older ones that I have seen. Great improvement!
Nice hot cup of joe and Conan couldn’t ask for a better morning
love Jimmy so much. Classic stand up comic!!!
The mosquito joke is pure gold.
"it's easier to build from legos than marble"....
6:08 those one-liners kill me. Well done.
Jimmy obviously grew up on Bob Monkhouse (US viewers obviously likely won’t know who that is), the one liners, albeit darker of course, the sharp suit, moving into panel and game shows very swiftly.. his path has been trodden before but kudos to him for attempting to evolve at this late stage. Says a lot about his will to learn and revise and hone.
I literally thought to myself "Every new Mitch Hedberg joke I find is like a little gold nugget" and you've expressed that here too. You don't really get that with story comedy, you don't remember a whole story unless you aim to retell it. But, everytime I set my emergency brake when I park up a hill I hear Mitch saying "It's a make your car smell funny lever."
Not a big fan of Carr's stand-up, but he's always been a good host on the panel shows. Here, as a student/philosopher of the humor game, he really shines. I like this version of Jimmy Carr.
I saw Emo in the late 80s. He was amazing. Also he had the greatest religion joke ever.
Ohhhhh yeah... My mom's partner is a somewhat militant atheist and that's one of his favorite routines ever
The punch line was "BLASPHEMER!', right?
@@solitaryman777 Yep.
“Die you heretic” was the line I remember
@@gxv333 According to Emo himself this is the actual text of the joke:
Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
Conan looking absolutely dashing in that mustard shirt
I wanted to be a comedian growing up, but decided that I couldn't come up with enough consistently funny material.
But that hasn't stopped a lot of comedians.
❤ Love you so so much, Conan … been with you since many, many years. Please never leave us, you’re the beacon of hope to a LOT of people around the world, including myself. I don’t think you’ll ever come to know the positive impact you’ve had on your viewers, and carry on having.
I saw Emo in the late eighties in London and was (and remains) great.
I saw Elmo on sesame street in '95 and have been hooked ever since. At least that's my earliest memory of elmo. I was born '91.
@@jkap34 they're discussing emo phillips lol
“My girlfriend has a heart shaped face. Not the valentine kind”.
I think that this is my favourite episode so far. Would love to see more comedians. But most importantly more people that Conan is sort of friends with cause these two got along so well. Loved them both in this!!!
Two of my Favorites. You love to see it!! 😄
2:12 - 2:35 what is going on with Sona's laugh here? Hehehe-hohoho-hahaha-hehehe"
😂, but also, "?"
I can't get over how funny it is that nowadays the hosts themselves do the advertisements like they used to do on the old black and white TV shows and radio shows even before that XD
I learned more about the art, mystery and history of comedy from these Jimmy Carr vids than ever before. Brilliant. He needs his own big chat show or something. Or host the Oscar!!!
omg Croydon Fairfield Halls mentioned in a Conan podcast! Hometown representtttt!
He mentioned Morecambe and Wise too. And Conan knows who they were. I love that!
@@johnking5174 Conan is a real stand up, and a historian of the game. I suspect someone like Bill Burr would also know M&W. But Jimmy Kimmel? Guaranteed not.
WRT Fairfield Halls. Despite it always looking run down, its had some great, legendary names there over the decades!
Croydon is a shithole
This is the first time in the podcast i saw conan struggling to contribute to the conversation. Normally, conan is so good with american comedians and he is the one that drives the conversation and in this case jimmy was taking lead on the direction of the topics they were talking about, conan was pausing a lot and thinking what to say and looking around to sona and matt for some help. Neverthelsess, awesome episode.
I agree. Looks like he hasn’t slept well or something.
Was nice to see Jimmy on here...i hope you can get Greg Davies sometime... he is about the best UK comic going and has 3 of the best specials of the last 20 years plus, hosts a ton of shows and has great stories..
“We’ve got flying cars!”
“…do we?”
😂
conan has instantly become top 5 podcast all timers
Cool episode guys.
thanks
No problem
Sona just laughing like a dork 😂
She is the best 😂
Really glad to see Jimmy going on US stuff. Liked his material and him as a person for a long time, but it's usually in the British circuit of things. Really interesting to see in his conversations with US ppl how comedy really does cross all differences.
Very Nice 🖤
I could listen to them talk about jokes and comedy all day.
jimmy also uses a telly prompter to keep track where he is when doing the show
I love that Sona is still a part of Conan's show.
Very good 👍 👏👏👏
Maybe just me but I feel that a monumental opportunity was missed here. Sitting across from each other are two of the great comedic wits of all times and they are conversing. Not that that's bad but imagine the same ten minutes roasting each other and everyone else at the table as well... It would have been epic!
If you turn on some of the shows in the middle, it’s very close to sounding like Howard Stern’s old show.
Conan even makes the advertisements entertaining
he tries new jokes. they just vacuum up air.
Can’t wait to see the next game with the Milwaukee Walkie Talkies
Conan knowing who Morcambe and Wise are is weirdly shocking to me. I suppose it shouldn't be, but in that moment it felt like two completely different universes colliding.
Jimmy Carr is great.
Haha for the first 2 seconds I thought Conan seriously thought Jimmy was 25 years old today... He does seem to age like a well kept marionette
Jimmy has admitted he has had work done. He had his teeth restored and has had his hair restored, and botox in his face. He admitted to all of this.
@@johnking5174 yeesh, he's also joked about it. You his doctor? Sean Lock used to roast him about looking like a child all the time dude look into some other shows
1.75x for most shows
The thumbnail made me think that thats his shoulders
I am loving Conan doing more stuff with UK comedians. Really hoping we see Greg Davies and/or Alex Horne make an appearance soon. That would be so much fun.
gourley looks like leonard from big bang theory
What I love in the talk is that you see what an amazing pro Jimmy Carr is..his approach to his craft is insane...that guys is really REALLY a professional
Wow I didn’t know jimmy carr could be this insightful, all I know him from is his dirty humour on British tv.
Miller lite
Tastes like
hey as long as we're doing dark comics, let's get Anthony Jeselnik on this damn show, he'd be brilliant
I love Bill Hicks also
That was the other option for the name of the show: Conan Wastes People's Time, but they still went with Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, which is also true.
Emo Philips is an icon
I hope Conan is getting his blood pressure checked regularly.
Jimmy talking at 2.0x speed, Conan's at 0.5x lol
Note Jimmy is drinking coffee and Conan isn't
You all know Jim's laugh because he's the only one who likes his jokes
I can't believe Conan needs a friend this badly.
Their official camp does not start until Sunday
Nobody's listening go Jimmy Carr at double speed, he's already doing it.
Looks like Conan got some sun
Sona selling Miller Lite makes me so happy...
As a huge fan of Jimmy Carr and British Comedy; it is bizarre to se him with Conan, Matt, & Sona. It is two worlds that should not belong together colliding together. It is like seeing Greg Davies & Alex Horne on Seth Myers last month.
Would be funny if Conan asked for some accounting advice.
Carr is hilarious, but Lennny Bruce was wrong about audiences being a genius. Look at Dennis Miller audiences. They laugh at any obscure reference just because it's the punchline. Comedianes and any entertainers can also do very well if they are mediocre, but good looking, or if the audience is generally drunk or stoned. No accounting for taste.
@@Chigoca I very much doubt a substantial portion of his US audience knew who the obscure references were in his stand-up routines. Given the average literacy level of US comedy audiences, it would be more ridiculous to assume they did. Granted, he was very well-educated and pretty witty in his day, and I liked him on the SNL Weekend Update, but he eventually lost any edge he may have had and has become nothing more than a sell-out Fox news puppet.
I'm not a big fan of Carrot Top, but at least he wasn't a pretentious ass. For political humor, I think comedians like Bruce, Carlin, Pryer, Judah Friedlander, Seth Myers, Michelle Wolf or the late Michael Brooks have/had more going on than Miller ever did. You may be surprised to know I think Norm MacDonald was one of the GOATs.
@@Chigoca Enjoy using that ridiculous strawman argument i.e. "If you're not a DM fan, you must only enjoy silly prop comedy". It's much more ridiculous to assume US comedy audiences even know who most of his obscure references were/are, or how the similes relate, if they even do relate.
I miss Benny Hill, that show would make certain people go crazy today.
👍🏼
Jimmy is basically the same as Jordan but funny
Story
aw man i thought the first title was pretty funny
This is the guy Pee Wee Herman was trying to emulate
'People don't want more time, they want more memories'. Jimmy Carr is hilarious but I'm often surprised at how poignant he can be as well.
Jimmy is talking as if he's teaching Conan how to be funny. I'm British but I find Conan a lot funnier.
Conan is a naturally funny guy. Jimmy is funny but he's had to practice.
What is going on with Conan’s hair???
Emo Phillips is the worst. No apologies.
Time wasters 😂
No.
The crossover nobody asked for
I wonder if the Americans understand what fast ball means (it’s a cricket reference)
Can't believe I haven't heard Mitch Hedburg mentioned.
He's mentioning comics from a decade before Mitch. Also thier style generally tends to be more acerbic than his.
Jimmy looks like a ventriloquist dummy that came to life
Does his face look weird or is it just me?
nah, I agree with you. he looks like a fake person.
