How to Make a Perfect Sign Everytime (CNC)

  • I've been trying to think of a way to do this without the use of a CNC if you have any ideas shoot your thoughts in the comments below.
    A technique that I thought of from back in my college days, in printmaking we would use registration marks for lining our prints up. I figured taking the same concept using a CNC to register each letter with two or more pins would be very helpful in keeping things straight and in place.
    This Sign is headed to Salon Noir in Reno Nevada, I am hoping it can hold up to that desert sun but time will tell, something not shown in the video in the many many layers of UV resistant spar varnish. Time will tell though, I told my client if it does not make it to call me up and I would take care of it.
    If I was to make it again the cutouts would have been made from Cast PVC, a tight deadline did not make that possible for this particular sign.
    CNC used @inventables
    Salon @salonnoirreno

      @@ChadsCustomCreations so I just tried it on a door hanging round. With a ton of individual letter. And it worked amazingly! I would never have been able to line up and space that many letters by eye. Thats why most of my name rounds use a font I can combine letters, lol. I found skewers at Walmart for like 1.50 for a pack. One skewer did a whole sign. And they are just a hair under 1/8th inch so a 1/8th bit cuts perfect holes for them.

    Great job on that sign. I use the same technique with dowels and it works great BUT if you glue them....you cant change your mind on the coloring that easily...lol i also use a 26 gauge pin nailer and that is also fast but alignment becomes a problem if you dont allow for registration marks. By the way...how do you go about pricing your work? Thanks and keep doing great videos

    • @ChadsCustomCreations

      As for pricing my work it has evolved over time. And I recently had a friend of mine's wife create me an excel spread sheets that allows me to input material cost, labor time, and it spits out a price that includes other things like an overhead cost percentage, taxes, and things like that. I in the passed always over look all those things and this now keeps me at my happy price as we would say on the Working Hands Podcast.

      Thank you Edgar, I do use the same technique, though instead of using MDF for outdoor signs I have found a source for MDO and Acrylic. I have not heard of any issues with this sign but using the MDF was definitely a gamble.

  • @woody350ep1
    @woody350ep1 3 роки тому

    I have questions.
    Was this a sign for outside?
    Are those MDF letters? I've always avoided MDF lettering for outside stuff just because it loves to swell up. I use MDO or PVC instead.
    Have you had issues with MDF doing that outside?
    It looks like you painted the back side of the letters as well. Have you had issues with lettering delaminating since the glue is bonding to the paint instead of to the material itself?
    Looks great though and I like the idea of the dowels. Definitely stealing that!

    • @ChadsCustomCreations
      @ChadsCustomCreations  3 роки тому +1

      I was really nervous about the mdf also, I drenched them in shellac countless times before painting them with what seemed like 20 coats of paint. I am hoping those layers have held up to the AIRIZONA weather which already had me nervous. I have not heard any bad news since it has been installed ill have to check how long ago that was. Knock on wood.
      I have recently found a supplier for MDO and have switched to that.
