Blackpool North Station Tramway Extension Is Now Open

After a very long wait the Blackpool tramway extension along Talbot Road to the Blackpool North railway station has now opened.
This film starts with a quick look at the Blackpool - Fleetwood tramway before showing the new section of street tramway and the three artworks installed at Talbot Square as part of the tramway extension project.
Two of the artworks are stainless steel depictions (with wooden slatted seating) of some older types of Blackpool trams (OMO and Brush) and this film also includes a little historic footage showing these trams in action (filmed by me 'many years ago!)
Designed by artist Andy Hazel, the tram benches were inspired by Blackpool's tramway heritage. There will eventually be four benches with these two already installed in Talbot Square and two more yet to be installed at the North Station tramway terminus.
The life-size painted bronze mermaid statute was created by artist Laurence Payot following consultations with fashion students at The Fylde College, pupils from Blackpool Gateway Academy and the council's beach patrol team. Named 'Call of the Sea' this was modelled on a real person, 3D scanned.

the blackpool tramway is great because not only does it offer you a convenient route to leave fleetwood, it now also provides you a convenient way of leaving blackpool too. just a shame it's not one way

When the TV serial "Tramways of the world" was made, Blackpool was the only British tram network.

I would like to ride on the Blackpool Tramway and it’s nice to see the new Blackpool North tram stop now opened as it’s opposite to Blackpool North railway station.

I hope Blackpool Tramway has further extensions/reopening. While the Flexity 2s don't have the same charm of the old fleet, they have no doubt secured the future of the system and provide Blackpool with a modern, accessible service.

Assuming this was filmed a day before 04/08/24 looking at this nice footage you wouldn't think a massive far-right protest went down there, shame that but no surprise in a way.
