The Wizard Nebula in mono HSO

I photographed The Wizard Nebula in mono for two nights in late December and collected more than 14 hours' worth of data. During the first nights astrophotography of The Wizard Nebula in mono the temperature dropped to around -30°C. I then completed the image during New Years Eve.
This is probably the most adventurous astrophoto channel on UA-cam! Follow me out to wonderful remote dark locations near the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.
The polar winter is harsh and extremely cold, but the dark skies are among the best globally, and nature is spectacular. But most of all, this is my home, where I do this wonderful hobby!

Thanks, yes the aurora flared up for a while. I did not notice it myself though. A couple of nights ago we had marvellous auroras here!

Hello David, I thought the last vid was New Years eve, so happy new year again :) Great vid, a little warmer for you. Especially liked the time lapse of scope juxtaposed with aurora. And really nice image, i'm learning that integration time matters and can be difficult when temps are so cold. As always, looking forward to the next adventure...

Another great adventure! Nice to have a cabin to go to for a while when imaging. Saw you had an issue with the ASI Air when selecting a filter further down the list. I have an iPad mini and can swipe up to scroll down the list. Hope this works. I have to image the Wizard again now that I have a filter wheel with SHO. I imaged it before with a OSC and triad narrow band filters, but you don't get the separation or contrast you do with the Hubble Palette.

haha fuuny, I use a dumbell weight on one of my rigs also and it works fine. Fantastic image of the Wizard. Glad to see it was nice and warm at -10degrees 😱.

Great video as always. Went out as it was clear for a couple of hours last night, was frozen after a hour and it was only just about freezing here, still can't get used to the idea of your weather, but I suppose its a dry cold, here it's damp and gets into your bones, great video 👍
Thanks Bill! Yes it's very dry but when it's extremely cold (below -30°C) it's COLD. I prefer warmer temperatures, but when living here you can't let it inhibit you. And on the good side is that -10-15°C feels quite pleasant. :)

Great video David, glad it wasn’t so cold, only -10, not -34! But you still had the problem of your weights bar freezing up! Strange that didn’t happen at -34! Those silicone cables are great, I bought a couple after watching one of your other videos! My EAF has been off a little, last couple of nights, (not as cold as your place!) but it’s still pretty good. Beautiful image of the Wizard Nebula David 👍 Great work!

Thanks Simon, I think it was moisture from condensation that made the shaft to frozen. I brought it in the cabin, but then stored it in cold temperature! Yes, the silicon cables are great! Last session I had a lot of problems with the EAF, had to unmount it. It was below -30° then, and now I thinking to construct a heater for it!
@@NorthernPanorama A heater would be the answer! Don’t think I’ll need one for mine! I’m launching my first full video on YT tonight, the Jellyfish Nebula!

Late answer, but thanks a lot! Yes, during winter -10° is pretty warm actually. 😀 During midwinter the temperature could drop below -30 to -40°C. But when you get used, it's not that bad actually. :)
Very cool image David. It is amazing how much detail you can achieve in an image when you have enough integration time. Lots of late nights! It looked cold in your summer cabin. How long does it take to warm up to the point of being comfortable inside? It was -50oC with the windchill last night here in Manitoba. Looking forward to next week when this extreme cold finally breaks. Hopefully we get some clear skies. Brian (Dr B from Manitoba, Canada)
Thank you Dr B! I close the door to the living room and has the open fire, and a liquid-gas warmer, so in a half an hour it's pretty comfortable, although cold in the rest of the house! We had extreme cold a couple of days ago, but today it has only been around -3-4°C. Cloudy though.

I also wanted to ask if you change the Lithium Grease on the Mount or any other modification for the Extreme Cold ….. Counterweight / Mount Dew Heater??? …. Also PLEASE NO MORE Hammer and Torch!!!!!! I felt the pain of the mount all the way here in the Bronx NY !! Sending Cyber Love and Warmth …
Thank you! Feliz Ano Nuevo! I have not made any modifications of the mount! I think the reason the shaft frozen was because of moisture that frozen after the last session! No hammer and torch!? Then you can't watch the next video! 😅A wide field with the Evo Guide? You mean use the 120 mini guide cam? I can try some night!
@@NorthernPanorama Hi Dave …one of your cooled cameras. The Skywatcher Field Flattener is 17.5 mm back focus…. The StariZona is 55 mm backfocus …. I use the 183MC noncooled … as main Camera … guided by 120 mini in the ZWO 30mm guide scope …AstroKracken makes 3D printed Rings and guide scope slot…
Fint filmat som vanligt 👍, nu i helgen verkar det bli toppen väder. Lite kallt bara, jag skall dock försöka se på m3, hoppas det går för jag har rätt mycket ljus på Erikslund.

@@NorthernPanorama Jo det har varit stjärnklart men kallt, hade själv en liten stjärnsession med några fd arbetskamrater på lördag. Minus 28 c, dom tyckte det var kallt men som sagt var... detta är en hobby för oss som gillar astronomi och kyla. :-)
