  • The Lopez family made history at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, becoming the first three siblings since 1904 to make the same Olympic team, and the first three siblings in history to win medals at the same Olympics. Mark took the silver medal and Steven and Diana both brought home the bronze, with older brother Jean bursting with pride for the siblings he coached to victory. Now they are currently in training for the 2012 London Olympics. They'll all be heading to London, but this time around Mark will serve as a training partner, having narrowly lost out on qualification on the U.S. team alongside Steven and Diana. Oldest brother, Jean, will once again be their coach.
The Lopezes are an inspiring story of a family united by a dream. They run a taekwondo academy near their home in Houston, Texas and their incredible success has been credited with putting the sport of taekwondo on the map in the United States.
STEVEN LOPEZ, aged 33, was the first official Olympic gold medallist in Taekwondo in Sydney 2000. He followed up with a second Olympic gold medal in Athens in 2004, and won Bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He also became the first athlete to win five back-to-back World Championships in the sport -- winning gold in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. He was named on People's 50 Most Beautiful People list and on the list of 100 Influentials of 2008 by HispanicBusiness.com.
DIANA LOPEZ, aged 28, was named USA Taekwondo Female Athlete of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008. She won gold at the 2005 World Championships and bronze in the 2007 World Championships. At the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, she won bronze.
MARK LOPEZ, aged 29, won bronze at the 1999 World Championships, silver at the 2003 World Championships, gold at the 2005 World Championships and bronze at the 2009 World Championships. In 2008, he won silver at the Beijing Olympic Games and was named USA Taekwondo Male Athlete of the Year.
JEAN LOPEZ, aged 38, was the U.S. Head Coach in 2004 and 2008 for the Summer Olympics. He was U.S. Head Coach for the World Championships in 2001, 2005 and 2007.

I love what Mark says about being able to kick/punch but not get in trouble! I've had the same feeling. Diana's statement saying her brother Jean was a World Champion, is false. Steven Lopez was the first American to win a World Championship - in 2001 + four more times over the decade. Regardless, they are very close and supportive family. One part of their story is a lie that has become 'legend'; they didn't "learn in their garage." They learned from a Korean Master like most of us did.

Why dont they wear their dobaks? Ever since MMA got popular you see more and more WTF sport taekwondo guys not wearing their dobaks when they train. I dont get this trend.
