It gets very humid there and those pictures are prone to molding in the corners. State officials come into homes for random inspections regularly and if the portraits are not pristine you can be put in a prison labor camp (literally for any minor “offense”). Hence, the extreme caution with the fans blowing on them. They are lucky to even HAVE electric fans in that building (or electricity at all) but it IS on the curated tour for foreign journalists, so thats what they want you to see.
Apparently North Koreans do not want to look happy or sad because they might bring attention to themselves. Just keep a poker face and look stoic and that seems to be the ticket to surviving.
Sad fact: You really believe anyone believes that. Don’t let the media paint a picture you should be painting yourself. There is truth and then there The Truth
North Korean people live to serve their leader and their country. While the western society, the people elect the government officials so that they can serve the people. This is the main difference of the two ideologies.
They are very clearly healthy and decently fed. You can tell when people are malnourished - the whole face sinks in on itself and the eyes lose their sparkle. There may still be some malnutrition in NK, but everyone shown in this video has enough.
in the New York subway you might get an a beating for no reason other than looking at someone. find videos like that all over website like worldstar..........................America is so much better I guess

its against the law to disrespect a pic of the korean leaders but they cant do jack to us if we are not in north korea so ima post picks of kim but mess it up just for the sake of it
Not really a documentary, but more of a travel vlog...search up "SAO Documentary" channel on YT. They have videos on North Korea that are very insightful. They are chinese tourist and are able to show a different side to NK that westerners don't see.
Read the book “Nothing To Envy”. It has multiple life stories from various North Koreans of different walks of life (although there the differences are miniscule by western standards) and you will get a great idea of what its like to live there. And what the people really think.
@2:05 - 2:15. Reminds me of the days when I was working as a public servant (Government Employee) in Canada. Someone could give a big presentation with big fancy charts or graphs in big bold numbers and everyone in the audience would just nod there heads in agreement without asking any questions.
Maybe if you didn't try to provoke your guide all the time ("did you read Orwell???") they wouldn't be so rude to him. There are other videos from tours in North Korea out there where they are friendly to the guides and therefore they get friendlier reactions.
2:50 wow these are the children of Albert Einstein .. how ?? Because they have put two table fans in front of a picture so the person in the picture doesn't feels hot 😂😂
They allow you to come see their curated facade to give the impression that everything is hunky dory. That’s how. You can only go with your “guides” (minders) who only show you certain places. That’s why.
Hate the condescending attitude of the reporter, as if everything in the west is amazing? How many people are using foodbanks in the UK? How many people live in complete isolation? Maybe we should focus our criticism inwards before trying to solve everyone else's problems...especially while there is that condescending tone in the voice.
And yet this journalist in every sentence uses phrases that relishes western powers. The sentence that Britain is in Europe is correct regardless of the brexit and as a journalist he should know that.
Why are most of these mini documentaries not actually informative but instead mocking of the people and place being featured? It’s very unprofessional and revealing of the contempt the reporter feels so all objectivity is lost.
channel 4 News - Why have you posted the same images that many other news organisations have broadcast over the last few years? Everything you presented in this video. has been shown to us by many other people.
@@greglastin8469 You miss understand my statement. I have seen many documentaries about North Korea over the years. Most reporters are taken on similar tours of the approved sites. But, the good journalists give some new insight into this country. Curiously, and uncharacteristically, Channel 4's coverage appears lazy and complacent. This report served no purpose. The world already knows this presented image of North Korea.
@I STAN Kim Jong-Un but Can't stand Trump I expect more from Channel 4. They have produced some insightful political documentaries, and current affairs programmes over the years. But this piece of the north Korea leader was lazy. i am not disputing the content, but the same information have been available on UA-cam for many years. I want some more insight into the political system, and the social infrastructure in North Korea. Pointing the finger at the country enlightens no one.
The irony of Channel 4 quoting Orwell and in the same news segment making an offhand lying comment about Brexit. The UK and its constituent country England will remain in Europe regardless of Channel 4 lies and spin.
3:47 Does it really matter? England was in Europe 1000 years ago, no matter the EU exists or not. England will be in Europe until the continent drifts enough. That might take more than 1 billion years though.
England is in Europe regardless of Brexit we are leaving the EU we would need some sort of tectonic shift to leave Europe but I guess they don't teach you that in British schools lol 😂
Thanks for educating us all on this Not Fox because clearly the journalist didn't know! I have two questions:1. Do you know what sarcasm is? 2. Have you ever been tested for austism?
Having been to the DPRK, I felt this was a tendentious and unfair report. Not being either a journalist or a tourist (I am a scientist and held a workshop), my experience was quite different and very positive indeed. People I talked to were open and friendly, and I was not minded 24/7. I was able to walk outside by myself and one ma came up to me and said "Welcome to our country".
I think you're allowing your positive experience with the people of North Korea to influence your judgement of the country and regime. Of course average North Koreans are not evil demons and as an invited guest you will be welcomed. Also the people that you would have been surrounded by were most likely very carefully hand-picked individuals and your trip is designed to leave only the best and positive image. Also assuming that you visited the capital, the people you saw out on the streets would have been the elite of the elite North Koreans because only they get to live and work in the city - hardly a true reflection of the nation as a whole. This is how the propaganda is designed to work and if they can leave a positive image in the eyes of even 1% of visiting foreigners the regime would see this as a success, because this gives them a platform from which to work with and try to gain more international support through this small foothold.
This comment is so old but I agree. I don’t know how people cannot separate the experience of individuals living under a regime from the regime itself. Obviously the citizens are human beings who are just doing their best to survive their tragic circumstance. Of course the government of North Korea is diabolical but these are just normal people trying to keep their family safe. @@wsiak340

They are FORCED to “volunteer” if they don’t want to either A) end up in a prison labor camp or B) get the bare minimum food from the government.
an incredible social experiment that lasts more than 70 years now...
Sad fact: north Korea citizens believe their leader and past leaders are immortal gods
Sad fact: You really believe anyone believes that. Don’t let the media paint a picture you should be painting yourself. There is truth and then there The Truth
nah, at this point most of them are aware that they are being lied to, particularly the yonger generations
I'm sure not all of them believe that, considering the amount of people who try to escape
They don't notice that the leaders die like everyone else?
imagine having to wake up everyday to live a fake life and pretend your happy and perfect
Like working at Disneyland??
It isn't necessarily faking. For some the happiness is probably genuine.
North Korean people live to serve their leader and their country. While the western society, the people elect the government officials so that they can serve the people. This is the main difference of the two ideologies.
Do the government officials really serve the people? I don’t think so
6:13 they have to say they have plenty of food otherwise they gnna get killed
No, that you think. Not for them.
They are very clearly healthy and decently fed. You can tell when people are malnourished - the whole face sinks in on itself and the eyes lose their sparkle. There may still be some malnutrition in NK, but everyone shown in this video has enough.
Damn, this reporter hated North Korea before he even got there.
It might have something to do with the stories dissenters told, you effing plum.
Do you know anything about North Korea? Apparently not, if THAT is your takeaway.
lol at the subway scene, no one smiles in the metro, nowhere in the world
in the New York subway you might get an a beating for no reason other than looking at someone. find videos like that all over website like worldstar..........................America is so much better I guess
tHeWasTeDYouTh exactly
8:00 It's a good thing he didn't forget his lines otherwise it would've sounded awkward
He almost screwed it up, that would've been death penalty
Leaving the EU doesn't mean leaving Europe. Excellent video otherwise, love continuing to learning about North Korea, pity about the low grade and incorrect statement.
I think it was just a little joke.
He is the ignorant one
6:25 Just ask them if they know anyone other than Kim Jong Un whos fat
Is anything we’ve seen real? “We trust Kim Jung Un”
"Did you ever read any George Orwell?" "I don't remember" "He's Interesting"
its against the law to disrespect a pic of the korean leaders but they cant do jack to us if we are not in north korea so ima post picks of kim but mess it up just for the sake of it
I can never find a truly objective commentary on North Korea on YT
Me neither
Not really a documentary, but more of a travel vlog...search up "SAO Documentary" channel on YT. They have videos on North Korea that are very insightful. They are chinese tourist and are able to show a different side to NK that westerners don't see.
Luis R. Thanks!
Read the book “Nothing To Envy”. It has multiple life stories from various North Koreans of different walks of life (although there the differences are miniscule by western standards) and you will get a great idea of what its like to live there. And what the people really think.
Wow, they really think they live in the greatest country on the earth...
Oh, wait
😳
It is the greatest country in the whole entire world! You get to learn all about your great leader gods of North Korea!
Isn't the US the greatest country in the world, they go around handing out democracy.
England is in fact in Europe, it's just the discussion of them leaving the European Union. Which is something totally different from Europe itself.
@2:05 - 2:15. Reminds me of the days when I was working as a public servant (Government Employee) in Canada. Someone could give a big presentation with big fancy charts or graphs in big bold numbers and everyone in the audience would just nod there heads in agreement without asking any questions.
SirXavior korth korea is heaven for minorities in India
Lol
Yes, let's bring democracy to N Korea to be just as wonderful as Iraq, Libya, Syria.
Maybe if you didn't try to provoke your guide all the time ("did you read Orwell???") they wouldn't be so rude to him. There are other videos from tours in North Korea out there where they are friendly to the guides and therefore they get friendlier reactions.
You missed the entire point. North Koreans are cold and hungry living under a God Emperor.
That's not the point of his report, he's not trying to get fake reactions he's trying to capture the REAL.
2:51 ok this is crazy. Pause your screen and look carefully...............
The fan on the right and on the left.......OwO
what? I don't see anything
Nogueira Malakian the fan on the right and also at the left.........
@@joaonogueira6247 the fan are working directed to the photo man 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@Pieterpc😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Probably to keep dust off the painting via their logic.
2:50 wow these are the children of Albert Einstein .. how ?? Because they have put two table fans in front of a picture so the person in the picture doesn't feels hot 😂😂
How were these guys allowed to do a documentary in North Korea
They allow you to come see their curated facade to give the impression that everything is hunky dory. That’s how. You can only go with your “guides” (minders) who only show you certain places. That’s why.
Hate the condescending attitude of the reporter, as if everything in the west is amazing? How many people are using foodbanks in the UK? How many people live in complete isolation?
Maybe we should focus our criticism inwards before trying to solve everyone else's problems...especially while there is that condescending tone in the voice.
Koodz At least you still have the freedom to criticise your government...
@@qwertyuiop6792 lol like that guy who lost his job for asking Boris Johnson a question the other day.
Yeah it was pretty cringy
Absolutely. The aim of this film isn't to give one insightful vision
Absolutely. The aim of this film isn't to give one insightful vision
2.50 Are they giving fan air to the great leader in picture ?
I thought I'm the only one who noticed it🤣
Hhhh yeah i saw it
They're fucked
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😆😅😂😂😂
It makes them *COOL*
Imagine having to read 1984 as a north Korean 😅
Those farmers wouldnt say they dont have enough. They would of had some problems
They would be sent to concentration camps or have themselves and their family assassinated
yet if this is all you know, you make the best of the situation
remember knowledge is power, the more you know, the better off you are
This documentary is overlandish in his comments about north korea
And yet this journalist in every sentence uses phrases that relishes western powers. The sentence that Britain is in Europe is correct regardless of the brexit and as a journalist he should know that.
Why are most of these mini documentaries not actually informative but instead mocking of the people and place being featured? It’s very unprofessional and revealing of the contempt the reporter feels so all objectivity is lost.
channel 4 News - Why have you posted the same images that many other news organisations have broadcast over the last few years? Everything you presented in this video. has been shown to us by many other people.
Because that's all he's allowed to show
@@greglastin8469 You miss understand my statement.
@I STAN Kim Jong-Un but Can't stand Trump
I expect more from Channel 4.
Have you even been to my room?
They have to say Yes for everything because Kim JongUn will get angry if they say no enough food or how much they hate dictatorship.
The irony of Channel 4 quoting Orwell and in the same news segment making an offhand lying comment about Brexit. The UK and its constituent country England will remain in Europe regardless of Channel 4 lies and spin.
I’m pretty sure it was a joke
WHY DO THE PEOPLE WANT TO DEFECT IF ITS SUCH A GREAT COUNTRY AND HAVE SUCH A GREAT LEADER. 😔
your not that smart, its well documented its a depraived country with not enough food and no freedom
I am 100% sure there are millions right now who want to leave America. There are many reasons for wanting to defect. Just a stupid argument.
Very clean city!
It's a prison
“Tried to show good things”
Even though there’s a law where only certain haircuts are allowed
Yes, hahaha. There is many stupid persons
Come on, stop with those provocative questions. “George Orwell”... How original, it’s the 1,000th time I hear this comparison
3:47 Does it really matter? England was in Europe 1000 years ago, no matter the EU exists or not. England will be in Europe until the continent drifts enough. That might take more than 1 billion years though.
They said the most secretive state💀
"we feel so proud....." he struggled to say that, this is so sad, they're petrified. I pray for theses people.
England is in Europe regardless of Brexit we are leaving the EU we would need some sort of tectonic shift to leave Europe but I guess they don't teach you that in British schools lol 😂
It was a nice little joke, anyway, even if it was obviously wrong.
Thanks for educating us all on this Not Fox because clearly the journalist didn't know! I have two questions:1. Do you know what sarcasm is? 2. Have you ever been tested for austism?
Why is there no google stories
The journalist comes off a bit arrogant
1990 subway cars from Germany. 1990 normal planting of rice -> in the orient. A touch of culture personality, and a huge heaping of propaganda.
Call me crazy, but it sounded like the woman farmer responded back with "I don't know" and then shook her head.
Having been to the DPRK, I felt this was a tendentious and unfair report. Not being either a journalist or a tourist (I am a scientist and held a workshop), my experience was quite different and very positive indeed. People I talked to were open and friendly, and I was not minded 24/7. I was able to walk outside by myself and one ma came up to me and said "Welcome to our country".
and then a flying horse came with kim jong un giving you a beer. it happened me too a few times.
@@wsiak340
We’re you able to take a picture of the leader off the wall and take it home with you?? Try it next time and see what happens
Your really a nk spy
Is north korea a country or a studio? Every thing seems to be cinematic. Nothing natural is allowed to be shown.
2:51 Are they serious with this??!
For everyone asking about the fans facing the portrait of the Kims: It is illegal to decorate your walls with ANYTHING other than their portraits (including your own family pictures). The state hands them out along with a white cloth that goes beneath them to clean them every day with and that cloth is illegal to use for anything else as well.
What am I watching in midnight...
Oww yeah, lets not talk about our starving 11 million kids in the UK and worry about outside world. Man, the western hypocracy and superiority complex is immeasurable in any shape or form!!!
Hey dipshit, it's actually 2 milion. And the level of starvation in the UK isn't even close to North Korea where people eat cold noodles with 2 vegetables 24/7 Go live in North Korea then if living in the UK is so bad for you. Let's see how fun it's going to be not seeing any meat for a month or ending up in jail for not bowing to a dictator's statue :) Fucking moron.
They eat dragon flies not to starve to death
Reporter doing his bit of negative propaganda. Well done mate.
1984 In Reality.
So which Shakespeare did you re...
“A L L O F T H EM”
They don't even smile or talk to others
It breaks my heart 💔
Should they?
I would be affraid to breathe there.
But what truly disgusts me is the fact that they waste money trying to make themselves look good while their people are starving
They are living 1984!
Why no subtitles on what the North Korean interpreter said? Or would this be dangerous?
I have never seen anything that said Made in North Korea. South Korea yes, but never the North. So what are all the factory's for? We all know the people can't afford to buy anything.
The farmers literally just said “thank you” lol
So city people gladly volunteer to work at a rice farm? 🤔 no food shortage...no! Plenty of food! Sounds like a perfect place to live.
"Plenty of food"? Almost the entire population is living in abject poverty with very little resources. It is only those in Pyongyang, the privileged few, who and entitled to food,
@@merlinmediagroup there's plenty of food.... you can tell who's eating!!😂🤣
