My friend just got in a wreck due to a drunk driver. She was coming home late after a night of work, and a drunk driver swerved into her lane, she swerved due to panic and flipped in her car and got stuck in a ditch. The drunk driver just drove off. She stayed there for over five hours, until the next morning when a school bus driver noticed the car and called the cops. She's on life support right now with a broken vertebrae and bleeding in her brain. She's got two young children and we don't know if she's gonna make it. I was a defense attorney for 20 years and represented hundreds of DWI clients. While the vast majority were just normal people who truly did not know they were impaired, did not do badly on field sobriety tests, and had relatively low (but still over the limit) B.A.C. They made a mistake and were generally very remorseful. If I managed to find a flaw in the breath test (and believe me those machines are NOT infallible) and got the charge reduced to reckless driving, I had no problem at all doing so. But there were a handful like this woman and representing them made me sick to my stomach. I've even had idiots show up to court drunk for their DWI case, having DRIVEN to court! (Two got arrested leaving the courtroom.) Eventually I decided I'd had enough and now I'm working on getting back to teaching math. Every defendant in this country is entitled to legal representation but it's women like this that made me quit.

I used to be a bartender. One day after a shift I had 4 drinks thinking I was fine to drive home (I'm 6'4 and 240 pounds). I was also on a weight cut for a tournament so the booze hit me harder than I expected. When I saw the DUI checkpoint, I didn't try to avoid it. I though "This is the same line I've been through a dozen times, I know I didn't drink too much". Turns out that due to my weight cut I blew a 0.09 and got a DUI. I didn't hurt anyone, nor was I breaking any laws driving. But I pushed my limit, played a stupid game and won a stupid prize. My situation was unlucky but still my fault. I never victimized myself and have found a better career since. I'll never understand how some people just blow it off like its nothing. I didn't even hurt anyone and I felt terrible.

FUN FACTS: for anyone who curious what ultimately happened, Maria Aguilera ended up accepting another plea deal: 5 years in prison, 3 years of probation, 200 hours community service, substance abuse counselling.
But wait, there's more! This report on the case was severely lacking. I don't criticize WPLG Local 10 for not saying what the defendant's ultimate sentence was, because they aren't time travellers, and had no way at the time of this reporting to know.
However, this report was weak. They didn't explain the details of the plea deal that got canceller, anything about the accident, and didn't show the defendant's odd or disrespectful behavior in court that lead to the judge bringing down the hammer of gavels onto the confused cranium of the criminal cr-something or other.
But wait - here's the more! The accident that cost Perez his legs wasn't just an accident: he was coaching his son's baseball team and got hit ON THE FIELD. Two other people were also injured, with Perez the worst.
The original plea deal was for 4 years of prison, 1 year house arrest, 2 years probation, 300 hours community service, substance abuse counselling.
So basically her house arrest was turned into prison time, she got an extra year of probation, but dropped 100 hours of community service hours.
That concludes this edition of FUN FACTS.

Thank you for filling in the blanks! There's absolutely NO excuse for anyone to get in a car and drive impaired - "buzzed driving" or solidly self-aware plastered... And the ridiculous thing is that those who do know that they are actually not in a state to drive , that they aren't "themselves",otherwise the issue of convincing themselves wouldn't enter their minds at all when they turn that key.. and every dui driver will tell that they had that conversation with themselves because they already knew it. My mother , years ago, had a drinking issue and I thank God she never tried to drive home. She had her "neighborhood" bar and that's where her friends all were. But I do give her credit because she would go to her car, get in and lock herself in and sleep it off. She never drove. I have a special interest here , I feel, since I graduated from South Dade High, but in 1978,years before this principal was there.. but it still pisses me off. I always say "if you can afford to go out to a bar, then you can afford an uber, lyft, taxi, etc" and its soooo much cheaper than a $10,000 fine too, but you avoid expensive bar tabs and uber fees all together if you just drink at home, and its cheaper too than going to a bar

The son is oozing the ‘entitlement’ he learned from his ignorant mother.
All pulled up to go to court. Probably trying to scam the system for some kind of disability.
So if the 4 yr deal got pulled, how much time is she facing? Nice the judge admonished her but since no verdict was passed down, and this further wastes time, why did the judge not slap her with a contempt charge?

Murder is when you plan someones death, what she did is manslaughter. You cant just make up any old charge, the Judge would have thrown a murder charge out and rightly so, it was no murder, attempter murder or any other kind of murder as it was no previously planned.

Right. Yank the plea deal cuz she shows up to court high, yet lets her walk out?? Wtf!! I went to high school with a guy who got 3 dui's in as many weeks, getting majorly injured (and injuring 2 old ladies) in the accident that got him his 3rd. Anyways, while he's going to court for these cases, he's super medicated and still using drugs, and the judge noticed and ordered a drug test. He popped for meth, being that he was prescribed everything else he was dirty for, and that judge locked him up til his sentencing, and gave him 8 yrs... This broad took a man's legs..
