You're not going to be groomed into an ABG/ABB if you grew up with PhD first-gen immigrant parents and your only social life involves piano lessons and competing in the math Olympics. If most people that you grew up around works at the nail salon or at a pho restaurant, that's a different story.

This, this and this. The ABG thing tends to always be popular with Southeast Asians by large. For whatever reason, they immediately lean towards hood culture...maybe it's because of where their parents often have their shops/restaurants or where they go to school. Koreans do to the ABG thing a little bit, but they're sort of like Suburban White kids with it--they go just deep enough to not alienate themselves from their parents, and bet your ass they aren't MARRYING that way. Chinese and Japanese girls don't do the ABG thing almost at all from what I see. They usually stay how they are. Not sure why that it is, but it's super-interesting to see and it's something I prefer. They got the right idea--don't be a follower. Be YOU.
I always come off as lame when I say this, but I hate seeing people want to latch on to the WORST side of Black culture---the part that does the most damage to it. I swear people get mad turned off if have a good vocabulary, you're not into getting high every day and you don't like getting yourself into unnecessary bullshit that can cripple their chances at a good life....not to mention ruining the image of your race as a whole. See, everybody else can walk away clean and free. They hit 25, and can go work at their parents' business, get a loan to start their own and live a nice life, like nothing happened. Black people have to actually suffer the societal and economic consequences when they choose that part of their culture. There's no respite. Personally, I don't like watching people suffer, so I'm not going to promote something that aids that.

I grew up in a small, white majority town so when I joined Univ I tried the ABB look for the first two years and hanged out with fellow asians/Korean Americans to fit in since I wanted to make asian friends but most of the people in these groups were already friends since Highschool and was rather exclusive to not just gyopos like me but Korean international students which I didn't ride with at all so I just decided to abandon all that and make friends with people I met through clubs and took classes with. And the ABG style was just so different to the type of make up/look that I was into that I didn't really put much of an effort trying to fit in with that crowd (I indeed don't have many asian friends as a result of it and dated many mediocre white girls as a result lol)

    • @user-tp7ne1du1n

Omg that's so true. A lot of immigrant asians only stick to people who speak the same language as them, and don't hang out with asian americans due to that cultural disconnection.

I’m glad I missed out on this trend. I began to be very individualistic & anti-trend as a teenager, so I never followed Asian fashion trends. I was sort of an outsider. I did have some racer friends in the late 90’s & I almost souped up my Acura Legend, but that’s about it.

It comes from the roots where asians are competitive so they do whatever they can to be at the top. They know the blueprint and what works so because of this they don’t have their own style. Because winning over everything. So yes they may seem lacking and unoriginal but it will have more impact than negative in their lives.

      Sometimes a society that prohibits.
Individual expression to a degree Create a form of repression that ends up giving the world interesting content.

As a Chinese live in America and witness all these thing, I really enjoyed the topic of this video. I went to collage here and I have some America born Chinese/Vietnam friends, many of them went through this style back then. But most of them would change back after they kinda settled in. I mean when they started to have regular small circles of friends they would just be themselves. And Some of them changed maybe after they found a gf. Its like many of them were putting on this cool guy persona when they go to collage. Like you guys said, people want to join the cool kids club. I think collage and highschool are the place that people trying to find their real identity. Some of them got lost tho.

I recently moved into an city with more asian americans really brought up a brief identity crisis for me when j started hanging out with more asian americans. Im involved in the alternative scene so thats usually the niche i stick with and it reflects in my style and music(i usually rock all black, vans, band shirts, tattoos and piercings, metal/hardcore, etc) But this experience really honestly just cemented in me that i just have to be true to myself and knowing who i am as an individual. Its tempting to change my style to hang out with people who are culturally more similar to me but at the end of the day its not sustainable when you have to force yourself to do activities and dress up in styles youre not comfortable in and dont enjoy.
If that means i cut myself off from the ABG’s in the dating pool then its not a big deal for me. Ive met alot of asians in the alt scene here in town and i really have a racial preference when it comes to dating anyways. But this is just my input from my experience.

Was a dork in high school and past that. Though it was a major source of self-esteem issues to fit in and to be accepted and validated (and still dealing with it everyday), I've always been just doing my own thing and not trying to fit in if it makes me uncomfortable, hence the self-esteem issues.

My teenager, who took 95% Asian features except for those cheeks and solid snow-white skin, also dresses up all ABG now. However, we are located in Asia where it's a thing for all college girls, 'working' girls, and going out to the bar. Showing up with your "nerd-look" is considered inappropriate and is seen as laziness. There is a dress for everything. Like Sundresses to the grocery store on Sunday. Sorry, I'm surrounded by Asian women, which is why my cookies brought me here. My filipino brothers just slay that jean and t-shirt look.

I never wanted to be an ABG mainly bcuz I already dig different aesthetics specifically kawaii, punk, and East Asian street fashion like K-pop and harajuku (which looks noticeably different yet somewhat similar from the ABG/ABB look) which I’ve been wanting to wear since middle school. But no don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate ABGs and ABBs at all, hell, I’ve been getting along with them in college and they’ve changed my life forever cuz I’ve always wanted to socialize and been sheltered as a kid. I rather hang out with ABG and ABBs than ppl who want to sit on their butts all day and do whatever at home all the time. ABGs and ABBs have a good balance of social life and home life which is what I’ve been striving for.
I like that they also indulge in stereotypical geek things like game and anime just like me. I love games and anime but I don’t want to only bond via these 2 things alone. I want complexity and variety like discussing life, art, food, nature, etc.

So, to comment on Asian male masculinity, I feel we are more subtle about it.
Using the gym for example: white dudes can come in all tatted up with "alpha" t-shirts but can barely deadloft 225 pounds.
Then you have Asian guys come in with anime t-shirts and pull 600 pounds.
Maybe its because they're pulling sumo? 🤔 😂

Honestly if I went to the same school as you guys I would never hang out with people like that. Don’t worry y’all will eventually answer to GOD. 🙏♥️✝️

I went to high school / college between 1989 and 1996, so the style was more preppy, rugby shirts and button down shirts with a tie and jeans, but nobody every attributed a fashion look to a person... Kevin Nyugen or Steven Wynn? Sorry, I guess I'm too old to understand this stuff. I haven't been on the dating scene for 25 years. Staying trim, going to the gym 5 times per week and playing aports should be what people do to stay active and healthy, with cholesterol at 100 when you're 49.

To BE FAIR if you are born in a family of doctors, lawyers, judges you are not going to be an ABG. Now if you were born in a family doing like nail salons, hair shop, restaurants than yeah you are going to be an ABG.

I grew up with a single Father who’s a construction worker. He was an immigrant. He never finished high school. My family is mostly BLUE COLLAR workers. But I’m not a ABG. Stop making excuses. I want to finish college, and have a family so I can make my parents proud. You guys just want to justify the way you act by making excuses how your parents never worked hard. It’s sad to see fellow Asians act this way and end up living a SINFUL LIFESTYLE. despite your parents doing everything they can for your wellbeing. But hey it’s your all free will to act the way you do. Sooner or later you’ll have to answer to GOD. 🙏♥️✝️ Repent and accept god as your savior.

When I was in Tokyo earlier this month, the girls all have the same look : some shirt, a black skirt (or school style skirt) , some black boots , hell yeah it was attractive but almost 80% of the young generation was pulling the same look. I don’t know about the guys but they weren’t impressive unless they were host club boys which I saw like one time at night. It be different in other countries

I am currently living in Tokyo 🗼. You are absolutely right about the female fashion choices here. From what I've noticed, the girls follow major fashion magazine trends, besides UA-cam fashion influencers. So basically, the majority of Japanese girls, with lower educational degrees ( high school grads which are 78%of it's population) wear the same clothes and they think it's very cool. Now the University grads who end up getting a good job and have a career tend to wear suit skirts or pants, usually black, navy or beije and minimum make up and accessories. Which is quite boring but it's a must from Monday to Friday commute time. My 2 cents.

@@meggtokyodelicious I see kpop idols dress the same too when they are performing, I wonder if it’s an asia thing as a whole? At first I assume they copy kpop since it is a big thing right now. I seen example Blackpink Jisoo wearing same style a few times, it’s just a common blueprint nowadays. I notice too the workers are dressed in those office skirts. As a guy I cannot complain because I have seen too many beautiful office ladies when I was around the subway during their morning rush hours. I have always been into asian women and Japan was like paradise (compared to the states)

I don't care for high end brands or my damn hair cut style, just cut my hair if it grows too long. I'm married and have a job, don't need the attention. If you want to attract girls, lift weights, play sports, and study martial arts, and make sure your Honda or Toyota or Nissan vehicle is clean and running well. If you want to make quality friends learn how to play FGC games like Street Fighter, racing games, like Gran Turismo, and listen to Heavy Metal Music. Clothing brands are meaningless.
