How a blind astronomer found a way to hear the stars | Wanda Diaz Merced

  • Wanda Diaz Merced studies the light emitted by gamma-ray bursts, the most energetic events in the universe. When she lost her sight and was left without a way to do her science, she had a revelatory insight: the light curves she could no longer see could be translated into sound. Through sonification, she regained mastery over her work, and now she's advocating for a more inclusive scientific community. "Science is for everyone," she says. "It has to be available to everyone, because we are all natural explorers."

First the deaf Annie Jump Cannon and now the blind Dr. Wanda Diaz Merced- the women of astronomy are by far some of the most amazing scientists ever. You're amazing Wanda! You may not be able to read this, but you're an inspiration.

As a blind person I thought this talk was pretty cool. I honestly thought she was going to use tactile mapping of some sort. Especially when she was describing the side bye side pictures of stars But I suppose sound provides better detail for something that's changing like the shape of a sta Still cool stuff

+Nathan Djohan lol most people do. I laughed when I read the comment about "maybe someone typed it for him". And another that called the blind woman in this video amazing even though she couldn't see his comment. Seriously. A blind physicist is able to hear and analyze a sta exploding but she can't read UA-cam comments. Good stuff lol.

Well, joke aside : by reading the electromagnetic spectrum of light that went through a dust cloud, you can guess the composition of it (if there is light missing at certain known frequencies, it means there is a know molecule in it). As they often are atoms or simple molecules, we have them on earth. So, I'm handed the money, I have one thing to say : challenge accepted !

    Dear TED,
She is infinitely more emancipated than your feminist "comedian", who just accused and mocked those not agreeing with her, because Wanda here overcomes her obstacles on her own instead of whining and demanding.
She is a role-model for every human being.
