I just did a diagnostic on my girls Heritage with a 103 engine. I found the stator was good. Before I removed the voltage regulator I checked it to see if it had a good ground to the bike and it did not. Her regulator is mounted on a stamped bracket bolted to the frame. I removed the regulator from the bracket and the bracket from the bike. Everything behind the regulator was caked with road crap and what looked like old engine oil...possibly from a messy oil filter change or 2. I cleaned everything with brake clean and cleaned the 2 plugs going in and out of the regulator, roughed up the back of the regulator and the bracket and frame mounts with emery cloth and put it all back together. The ground between the regulator and frame was now good. The charging system went from 12.6 volts running at the battery to 12.9 at idle and 13.8 reving the engine. Once the battery returns to full charge all should be fine.

I've done this twice on my own Fatboy, learned that running that primary wire back to the connection was easier by cutting the old one at the regulator & connecting the new one to it to 'fish' it back thru the frame to the actual connection.👍

sound like a great hack for running the wire with ease thanks

My 2010 fat boy lo started with the engine light coming on and after 60mph my speedometer light would go out! Pain in the arse!! I ended up taking it claiming it was the stator however it was in fact the voltage regulator that was going out. I had them replace both to be safe. Mind you my bike has 57k miles on it. I appreciate this video as a woman who rides as it helps me to know what it is getting done to my bike!

Hey man, thanks. You described exactly what just happened to me this afternoon. Except I didn’t make it home. Got bike towed to home. Found your video. Followed your lead, (no pun intended) found it was the regulator and now I’m shopping for a new one. Bravo! You just saved me hundreds of $$$ !!! Just one thing. On your stator test, you could have informed us that you are testing each plug against the other all the way around the three way phase connector. That was the only thing I did not hear or see you do or talk about. I guessed that was what you did and I duplicated your meter readings. Thanks for the great video. 👍

I might have to do this same thing. after a few days of not riding or starting the bike, it won't start. Hopefully mine is this simple. I just have to get back to my tools so I can get my multimeter to test. Thanks for putting this info out there though.

Very useful information. I ended up on the side of the road today. Called the bike dealer cause its under warrAnty but it turns out it was the regulator... nice to know it’s a simple fix it it happens again in the future.

I had a bad battery, jumped my bike, hopped on and rode off. A few minutes later the radio quit, followed by the gauge pegged out past 16V. Kept riding to find a place to pull over and smoke came out from under the seat. Found the stator shorted, and the artery cooked, seems like the voltage regulator is bad also. Used a meter to test the diodes, reads “OL” across all the terminals, but this method is surefire. Great opportunity to check those grounds as well. I would also not recommend jump starting a bike with a running vehicle.

YUP ur stator is good, thumbs up. Just went through this on my 91 Sporty1200, that was weird, I really thought my stator was toasted as the connector between it and RR was so hot is was
smoking. But knowing how to test the stator was good as it would have been a lot of trouble to
get a trailor and get the bike to a dealer, and of course what the would cost.

hi nice video, I had the same with my heritage M8 114, the regulator is'nt in the best of ideal places especially if it's raining a lot of spray comes off the front wheel, when mine broke it over charged the battery at 17.2 volts and distroyed that as well ,Hmmm

The first test to get the ac volts reading. Was nt he connected to stator and not the voltage regulator? The stator makes ac . The reg makes dc .it converts it to dc .
