- Transform your Baofeng DM5R Tier 2 with the Open Firmware upgrade. In this video I am using a DM5R but the RD5R is identical.
This is an easy and reversible process so why not give it a go?

Hi Kevin ,That was a very interesting video .I was watching a couple of other videos regarding this open firmware and it is getting very popular as a game changer to the radio/s in question.

@@KevinOReillyswl I forgot to say that was an excellent tutorial .It was not rushed like some other videos .Your video allowed for the viewer to absorb the info at a nice pace, while following it for their own installation with ease. Thank you for posting a very useful tutorial.

I loaded the firmware to the RD-5R. Towards the tail end I there was a message on the screen saying success (or words to that effect) but the the firmware update complete message box did not show up. My heart sank!! However when I booted up the radio, it seemed that the firmware had been successfully uploaded (i hope). Eventually I wrote a small code plug for TG91 and had successful QSO through the hotspot. THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH for this video.
Look forward to more videos on the OPENGD77 and Baofeng radios.

I run the opengd77 firmware on the gd77. I love it with only ONE exception... the loss of the text messaging capability. I love the hotspot function! I would consider putting it on the rd5r but do not want to lose the text msg.
I have never used text messaging on DMR so don't miss it. If you have a GD77 you will be able to share the codeplug with your DM5R.
@@KevinOReillyswl Understood. That's how I feel about whether or not a radio has GPS. I have found the SMS useful for leaving off-line notes for people (so long as their radio is on to receive it). It is a feature I have become accustomed to.

Is it possible to rewrite the memory of a first DM-5R version - tier 1 -or I will need to buy another radio ?
Is it possible to roll this back if I don't like it?
Yes you can te flash back to the original firmware
I'd recommend you try the Beta versions, they are normally pretty stable despite being a Beta.
The Beta released yesterday (2020/01/19) , has a load of bug fixes, and has had 53 downloads in the last 12 hours, for the RD-5R and no reports of any new bugs.
The GD77 has 210 downloads in the last 12 hours, with no bug reports.
So its definitely worth at least trying the latest Beta, and if there are any problems you can always reload with an older version.
BTW.
Although the firmware does support Hotspot Mode on this radio, the radio hardware really isn't up to the job, as the internal voltage regulation can't take the stress of running the USB to a RPi and also transmitting at the same time.

OK. I am not sure what a DM-5RA is. If it is a Tier 2 DM5R then yes it will work,

My RD-5R is working great on the CPS. I'm not sure its worth the switch, but I'm going to give it a try. Is it possible to read the current CP and then Write it into the GD77 CPS? Great video, BTW.
No unfortunately you will need to either download a new codeplug or write one as the standard codeplug won't work

Sadly the OpenGD77 has ceased due to software licensing issues I believe.

@@digamcrown as I say the project has closed due to licensing issues. I think the software authors had to take all the links to the software down. As far as I know the software/firmware is no longer available.
