Amazing new HF Transceiver from China????
Hi Kevin, my interest in radio started at a young age in the early 60's in Uganda (East Africa) my parents used to play the "football pools" and would sit on a Saturday night tuned to BBC on their "radio gramme" which had a SW band and they would listen to the football results, the radio was a Phillips and it was a valve radio, after they had listened to the results I would twiddle the tuning knob and listen to many International radio broadcasts, I became fascinated by what this radio could do back then and so my radio "career" started and I'm still in it today 73's
My father had an ITT radio in the living room and i used to tune in to shortwave radio stations. This was early 1980s, I was around 7... I was so fascinated, world was "smaller" those days. In Norway we had one tv channel and one radio channel back then. My mother told me to lower the volume many times, for her it was just noise. I'm 50 now, still interested in radio and radio communication
I need this software in Android mobile version
When you buy one of these radios you are married to the internet app service provider....choose wisely. I have several Ocean Digital radios which use the "SkyTunes" app , and a Sangean internet radio which uses "IRadio" app. So far, so good....
Somewhere in Scotland
Hi Kevin, I had a similar experience to you re my fascination with radio, started to get interested in the early 70's used to sneak into my sister's bedroom and tune around on her clock radio 📻 and any other radio in the house, I think my dad got fed up with me always tuning his radio off the station he listened to that they got me my first radio which i think was a ITT LW/MW and FM set, like you I was fascinated by what you were able to listen to, as time moved on and after a variety of second-hand cheap short wave radios in the late 70's got my first general coverage receiver, it was a Panasonic receiver can't remember the model number that was great first time I could listen to SSB I was properly hooked on radio then this was also the time I got my first CB, I finally got amateur radio licence in 1988 and I'm still hooked on radio now.
where is from. i dont hear good
Qodosen super👍
Anyone know where to find the software?
They say it sounds much better as the R2000
Rare to find NXDN programming. Yet to see HAM (currently aware of) go full hog trunk to basic digital voting.
I was going to buy one of these radio's. But when I discovered they don't come with a battery I didn't get one. It would have been another 20 pounds for a battery and charger. Plus it doesn't receive ssb. Nice video, many thanks.
The 18650s are not that expensive and can be charged in the radio. I believe there is an issue with shipping them so they come without them. Its true the radio doesn't have SSB but its a superb receiver.
@@KevinOReillyswl Yes I do agree, the radio is superb. The radio is selling on Amazon for 84 UK pounds. So with batteries and charger plus p&p around 110 pounds. I mite buy one when they drop the price. I did hear they are bringing out a updated version. To address some of the issues people have commented on.
I have two of the DX-286s. They are fantastic. I love the FM profiles. The C.Crane Twin Coil antenna turns this little guy into a Medium Wave Champion :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this radio. The Browse feature of the DX-286 picks up faint stations incredibly well, it is great to use on Shortwave. The current draw of .190ma is well above average, but having a couple batteries with you is good, just have to store them correctly for travel. There is some new tech in 18650s, and they have realized capacity values up to 4,000mAh now. I tried one from a current flashlight that came with a 3,800mAh Protected Button Top, and it tested 3,800mAh using a discharge value of .500ma.
On a different UA-cam channel, the video claimed that protected 18650 cells don't fit into the DX-286. It sounds like your protected 18650 cells fit in. Is that correct? I am new to 18650's, and I think I'd prefer protected cells, if they fit of course. I couldn't find any indication in the manual for the DX-286. Thank you.
@@privatestuff4432Protected button top 18650s do indeed work in this radio, as long as the positive tip is the normal variety. I had a few orbtronics that didn't work because the button top was too shallow. Every other Orbtronic Protected button top I put in later, worked. Protected button tops from 18650batterystore will work as well. It is the wrap, or thickness of the battery that makes for a snug fit. Rotate the battery so that the protective strip that runs down the battery is towards the battery door.
@@todderbert Thank for the explanation!
Anyways I just got my Dx 286 yesterday I have 909x2. 990x DH 808 this little 286 is the best radio I have it out performs every single radio I have I'm in central Alabama USA I FM scanned last night counted 86 different FM stations some I've never heard of. On am was getting cuba on 530 mw stations I've never heard no other radio I own does better I use a Sirio boomerang on my back deck and yes FM works with the antenna jack. Most radios won't work on mw or FM this one does id recommend this DX 286 to anyone for the price. And for it's size it's sounds decently pleasant. I love this radio $79 Amazon worth every cent!!
All i heard is goodbye in russian and 23 23 23 and something about weather
Your BGM is too loud compared to your voice recording.
😂😂😂 seriously must be a slow day in your area nothing better to complain about 😂😂😂
А где SSB, на задней крышке вроде написано или она от атс-20.
Thanks Kevin! Nice first impressions. Was close to getting the FT-710, but decided to get the FT-DX10 instead. Much prefer the way Icom does it's UI and menu system, but the Yaesu's really have a brilliant receiver in the current line of radios.
Hope you enjoy the FT-DX 10. I think the FT710 is an excellent little radio so far.
The Tecsun PL330 has ETM+ with the ability to scan and store the shortwave bands for each hour of day and more importantly VF/VM tuning which allows to scroll through presets in VM mode with the tuning wheel. These 2 are very big usability improvements over the D808 where you need to go through pages and keypad entries for preset number - good luck doing that in darkness!! Next the volume control on the PL330 is digital encoder and on headphones it will always be either louder or quieter than needed as that encoder has 30 steps. D808 has analog volume control which can be precisely set to preferred volume. This will only be an issue with headphone listening though.
The Tecsun has some excellent features. I actually bought an XHData D-109 instead, but only after giving it considerable thought. The PL-330 has a lot going for it.
Interesting comparison, thanks for sharing. Well, it's clear that the mighty "Q" wins hands down once again. It clearly does in FM too compared to my ATS 120 AMP, but on short wave they come up pretty close to each other, the "Q" having a small advantage. BTW it could be deliberate, but you do realize that you haven't taken the factory installed protection film out from the display of your SR-286, do you? 😁It's pretty scratched already.
Hi Kevin, I have similar issues re 4 meters and 60 meters with my ic-7300 to get to these band's I have both stored in memory for ease of access and 60 meters is for me always on vfo B, it'll be nice if ICOM did a firmware update so we could edit the band stack so you could add any band to the band stack including shortwave broadcast bands for short wave listening.
Does it offer the same compatible encryption? I know how people feel about encryption, but I just like it as an option.
Not sure on encryption as its illegal to use encryption on amateur bands in the UK and in any case I can't really see the point of encrypting an amateur transmission.
Plus unlike many other rigs, it can provide full (right & left button) mouse control. My Icom & Kenwood can't do that.

Apparemment, c’est Radio Mike, une radio des Pays Bas sur ondes courtes
Hi Kevin, do you have a 7300 would like to see a comparison to the FT-710 i do like some of the features on the 710 but don't know if it's worth replacing my 7300 for one.
Adam, I don't have a 7300. I went for the FT710 as it was significantly cheaper new than the Icom. A local amateur that has owned both told me that receive on the 710 is better.
@@KevinOReillyswl I think the FT-750 is amazing for it's price, I'm currently considering the HF signals sBitx V3 that's for me a very interesting radio.
same version here
''ma come...hai speso 4000€ per un trasmettitore ed invece di parlare sui 40 metri... ci ascolti la AWR...''
4000 Euros!! I don't think so 😅. And anyway how do you know that I haven't been speaking on 40 metres?
The FT-710 is a transceiver new in the UK for under a £1000.
Hi Kevin, thanks for making this video. I have a couple of TM-G707 that I am still using today after over 20 years. I had recently bought a programming cable but could not get any software programs to connect to the radio to work (CHIRP and Kenwood`s own MCP-2a). After a quick search I was able to find the software you used in your video, unzip it and rename a com port. It worked straight away (using Windows 11). When I write back to the radio and the transfer is complete my radio re boots its self. 73`s
I am about to do this (just waiting on the radio arriving). I assume you can use the same cable as a Baofeng FM handheld? I happen to have one of those with an FTDI chip in it so its really easy to use. GM4SVM
Hello. DM-1701 cables don’t use and FTDI so you’ll probably need a different cable but most orders will include one. :)
@@CC-ty6hn Thanks. There was a correct cable in the box when it arrived.
Nothing strange about it, it's Russian Volmet from St. Petersburg or Rostov. I pick it up all the time.
Good radio.... .
Great informative review. Can you single step tune on all bands? Best Wishes
Works fine with any external antenna: loops amplified or not, longwire, end fed, and supports very well the higher ganancy, with a good kit of 6 attenuation levels
Hey are also on 80 m as well…. Those idiots
Picking it up now....Thanks
CB'er with a ham radio. What's this world coming to?
Hello from New Zealand. I have the icom IC-F6023 i cant find the programming software for it anywhere. Any clue ?
Best Ham radio value today.
Interestingly, in my opinion, the main difference here is the sound, and it's not merely due to the difference in speaker size. While the DX-286 sounds like it has a 4k bandwidth maximum, the Belka-DX sounds more like it has an 8k bandwidth. Thanks for the comparison.👍🏻
That's true, the Belka's little speaker has very little response in the fundamental voice range and tilts the balance to the top end with its inherently worse SNR. It's really only some fallback option if you forgot to bring your headphones and does not reflect the excellent signal quality of the Belka. Also both radios should've been set to a comparable bandwidth in first place, the Belka's filter settings are "per sideband" = audio bandwidth in AM, so the 4kHz setting (the recording sounds like that) would be equivalent to an 8kHz conventional IF filter, which can be a bit much for a 5kHz SW broadcast band channel. For assessment of actual sensitivity, weak stations are more meaningful too.
@@gerdpfeil That's interesting info I wasn't aware of; thanks for that. I could only add that both AM and SW should have variable BW because many stations don't adhere to that 9k/AM (5k/SW) channel width. Say CRI on SW would blast in full 15 kHz BW providing richer sound, one wouldn't be able to enjoy with a SI4732x-based DSP radio allowing for 6k BW max. on AM. Similarly, there are 20k BW stations on AM. For me it's quite obvious if a receiver has narrow BW, no speaker specs would change that impression much. The worst case is when a capacitor is added to sound apm. in parallel to "filter" hissing - the result is muffed sound.
I'm looking forward to your review on this radio Kevin.
I love it. Unfortunable actual situation, LW in South America doesn't exist but some NDB beacons in procces of extintcion make me a little idiot 😅😅😅
Just posted on your other video with BBC Cornwall on 95.2. Looks like you are in the exact same place and you get the option to listen to either BBC Devon or Cornwall.
Such a happy fond memory of what was once a good radio station that has now been ruined by the entire BBC. 95.2 FM you was somewhere in the East part of Cornwall with the signal transmitting from Caradon Hill near Liskeard? FM signal is nowhere near strong as BBC Devon on 103.4. Half of East Cornwall in places like Hannafore of West Looe gets better signal from Devon than they do of Liskeard.
I was in North Devon near Croyde Bay
@@KevinOReillyswl Radio Cornwall was pretty strong for Croyde bay. You wouldn't be too far away from location to lose radio Cornwall signal altogether if you went further into Devon
Thank You very good advice 🤗🤗🤗 well done my 1701
Glad it was helpful!
Nowhere on the Internet can I find a guide on how to open the 1750Hz tone repeater. Could you please help me with this? Best regards
Got my for 24£ amzon
I just received my ATS 20+ today and the USB Download is not recognized by my computers com ports. The driver is installed and the computer does see my ATS 25 but not the 20+. 😢. So I can not update the firmware. 😢 I tried 10 different cables. My nano board has no pins at the front of the board. So I wonder whats up with that.
