  • Thanks to Tony Bagadonuts for sharing his Whiskey Acres Blue Popcorn Bourbon with us. It has a mash bill of 75% blue popcorn, 15% soft red winter wheat, and 10% malted barley. It's four years old, 97 proof and a 750ml bottle sells for around $65. Whiskey Acres is located in Dekalb, IL.
Welcome back to "Short and Sweet", where the reviews are (usually) short, and it's very sweet of those who have shared their whiskey with us.

Whiskey Acres gets all of their grains from their own farm, and they experiment with a lot of heirloom corn varieties with their limited/artisan releases. The blue popcorn isn't my favorite either, but I do really like their Bloody Butcher Corn and Glass Gem Corn bourbons. They also released their first age stated bourbon recently at 7 years old, and that was pretty solid too. Ironically, I think my favorite of theirs is still a Master Distiller's pick of their rye. Make sure to visit the distillery in DeKalb, IL if you ever get a chance.

I saw you both at the Bardstown Collection party at Scout & Scholar in January 2022. I am one of the brand ambassadors for Whiskey Acres. I brought a bottle of Blue Popcorn and was pouring that night.

Whiskey Acres is a great place to visit. Been going their since they have opened. The barn door cocktail is my favorite. I do have a bottle of the blue popcorn.

Great review. I live 30 miles north of the Whiskey Acres Distillery. I love the Blue Popcorn Bourbon and their Bloody Butcher Corn Bourbon. I also have a Whiskey Acres Single Barrel store pick that is fantastic and just picked up a Whiskey Acres 7 Year Wheated Bourbon today. 🥃

Big popcorn fans in our house. So this one could be a fun pour. Thanks to Tony and y’all for this intro to a new whiskey!

Here in the Chicago area, Whiskey Acres has done radio ads for that last couple of years, which is how I am familiar with them. They are from Dekalb, IL. I have seen some of their products in stores, but have not tried any.

Nice review! I haven’t heard much about this one! I haven’t seen it where I’m at in California. I really like the short videos on occasion! Cheers!

It's a smaller Illinois distillery, but they put out some unique stuff. They're a farm to glass distillery, and they experiment a lot with different heirloom corn that they grow themselves. They're still a fairly young distillery and just released their first age stated bourbon last year at 7 years.

Their artisan series can definitely be more individually liked but their regular bourbon is delicious and all their own grain. Maybe a future pick? 🤔

I've heard of that rare "Jimmy Red" corn used for special whiskey recipes, but blue corn is a new one. Very curious to try this (and some made with the Jimmy Red) but doubtful I'll get my hands on either (darn Michigan!!!!)

If you can find Texas Pot Still Bourbon, or Baby Blue or True Blue corn whisky, all from Balcones Distilling, they all use roasted Texas blue corn.

Blue popcorn, red wheat, and (white) barley? Seems like a missed marketing opportunity.

do you get a tequila note? i have an unaged "white dog" whiskey from a local mid-Missouri distillery that was made with a significant amount of blue corn (mashbill unknown) and everyone that tries it swears it's tequila. this flavor was even a surprise to the distiller.

    • @WhiskyForBeginners

That's weird, since Mexican law mandates that tequila be made with blue agave, which is not related to corn.

Nick and the guys at Whiskey Acres are incredibly nice and I love their true grain to glass approach. We've tasted a few samples and will be posting them soon. Interesting take on the Blue Popcorn Bourbon! Thanks for sharing. You two are great, as always!

sadly, i feel this is the best they have to offer. the core products are not so great. really fun place and ok mixer bourbon, but not a sipper bourbon i think

A Texas based blue corn whiskey has been to date the ONLY whiskey I’ve had in the past three years that I actively disliked so this one is probably a hard pass for me. Well at least as a bottle buy but maybe not as a pour.

Blue corn isn't the problem. I like Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon, which uses roasted Texas blue corn, but couldn't stand New Mexico Blue corn whisky, which also uses blue corn. You can make either junk or art from the same paint. 🙂

I really like Balcones True Blue, but it doesn’t taste like bourbon.
