  • Oliver Edwards needs no introduction, his flies are known the world over. It’s his Rhyacophila larva which is my favourite. I have known about this pattern for some years but only tied and fished it recently.
Oliver Edwards rhyacophila larva firmly cemented its place in my fly box last summer when I used it to amazing effect on the freestone rivers of northern England. Fishing a double nymph setup with a heavier jig fly on the point and the Rhyacophila larva on the dropper. Targeting the faster riffles at the heads of the pools, I was able to land many trout and grayling with the majority coming to the rhyacophila larva.
The tying process is pretty straight forward, although Oliver’s original rhyacophila sparkle yarn is hard to come by. Fortunately there are many good substitutes. For the rib I like to use Kreinik blending filament 053F, this highlights the segmented body nicely, however play around with different materials to suit your own taste.
