Best explanation I ever received about how to steer a zero turn was that it's like handle bars on a bike. When yo wanna go right, push forward with your left. When you wanna go left, push forward with your right.
I inherited a near-new Ariens zero turn. Sometime in the next two weeks, I will have to come to terms with it. That's why I'm here. I like the bicycle analogy the other guy offered.
You won't believe how many times I have rewatched your video. It is very helpful. Expecially since my zero turn mower won't be delivered for a few days. I'm a first time user and a bit nervous. Thanks again. I'll try not to damage anything while I'm learning.
Just upgraded from an old Craftsman tractor to a used Exmark Lazer Z Hp Zero Turn with 1800 hrs. Pick it up tomorrow hoping it won't need much TLC or maintenance.
We mow cemeteries and other municipal properties. Toro is the brand of choice. 4000 & 5000 series z turn mowers. Can be a harsh environment, testing equipment and operators daily. FYI all two cycle equipment is ECHO
Cool video. I know how to use one but I was seeing if there were any valuable pointers so that I can answer more questions that my customers may have. We sell a few brands and Hustler’s my favorite.
The first thing you need to do is lower the tire pressure in the rear to 10 psi. These things will get stuck on wet pavement, this gives you more ground contact and improves the ride quality. I have a 920 John Deere with inflatable tires, I wanted the noninflatable tires till I priced them! Since that wasn't going to happen I inspected them and they were much softer with more ground contact. I have air valves so I can do that. I was telling a friend who owns a landscape company and he runs 9 psi in his mowers. I thought I was on to something and they were already doing it. lol
Just need to slow down when it's wet-what he really missed on is for beginners is don't take these on a hill until you learn the machine and even then be careful and know the limits
@@daveclark305 I live on Chickamauga Lake in the hills of Eastern Tennessee. After several years of using the Z920 on the farm I decided to use it at home. I wasn't opposed to standing one on the back tires but my goodness. My butt had never been that tight, I still haven't found the seat. I have a 4x4 Kubota with fluid in the rear tires and axle extensions now. After a certain tractor weight shifting your body weight makes little difference so the set up is everything. Mowers make bad dive partners but zero turns are less likely to let you go alone. The cut quality of both is very nice but that's where it ends. My neighbor has a zero turn Scag which is a nice mower but it's been in the river twice. From what I can tell apparently a durable mower but lacking flotation. I mow around his bank line so he doesn't go swimming again. I give him hell about mowing in his bathing suit, what are friends for. I should clarify that it is difficult to flip the wider zero turn mowers it is possible to go down hill faster than you intended. While I have carried the front tires going uphill the mower has never gotten enough traction to flip backwards. This is just me on a John Deere Z920, your results may vary. You just can't go back down the hill forward or you'll be doing 35ish with the back tires sliding and no steering. It's the little things that piss ya off.
I have a Simplicity Citation 21 with a 48 inch deck, and I LOVE that ❤ thing. It rides like a Peterbilt 379 with Peterbilt Air Leaf air ride. My chiropractor approved of it , because it’s easier on my back. The only downer was is that I had to put in a new PTO switch, and a new electric PTO clutch, but I did all of the work myself.
One of the main problems new riders have is trying to ride to fast once they get the hang of it. They try and go so fast once they get comfortable that they leave Mohawks or just dont cut the grass, because going way to fast makes it so the grass doesn't even get the full cut
@@TimManus-qm3db no I literally didn’t know. It’s my second season. I thought my blades were dull. I went and bought new blades so I could sharpen my extra at my own convenience
You dont really have to do 3 point turns unless the grass is moist like in the morning. Or wet at all. Otherwise its usually okay to do a small zero turn.
@@capealio dang it...and thanks...so its reverse ..I have not driven it yet...scared😜 But I will get one of my friends to patiently show me🙂 ......edit still haven't drove it yet but I will😉
Think of it like handle bars on a bike. I'm an older gal who just bought and mowed her 2 acres with a zero turn. If I can figure it out, you can too. It's really not that hard, go slow at first.
The biggest problem with the old style riding mowers is loss of traction in a slippery spot, where one wheel will spin, and the other doesn't move. So with two transmissions, one powering each wheel, that problem is gone now? Both wheels will turn, or spin?
Great video brother. Question? I have a bad boy revolt 54in kawasaki evo standon mower. Do I need to run it at full throttle? I may be wrong. It seems excess or regularly mowed lawns. Thanks for your answer.
Yes. Full throttle. That is the blade speed. It also cools the engine. Remember they are air cooled via the fan on top. That needs to run at full throttle. Running less may also put more stress on engine, causing it to run... hot.
Okay...I can't afford one types of mowers right NOW but I am looking into maybe buying one in the future and I have a VERY important question that will decide if I ever buy one or not. I live on a hill with a steepish incline and the ground can be rather soft and uneven...especially if moles and groundhogs have been digging around the property during spring and summer. How good are these types of mowers for such terrain? The top of the hill where my home and more of my yard is, is decently flat but the hill is the scariest part to mow, always has been even for my grandfather back when he was alive to do it since if you go sideways on the hill at certain points it could flip the mower. My grandpa had an old fashioned front heavy mower..like the classic John Deer you see with the seat in the back and deck sticking out from under it. If I'm gonna sink $1000+ on a mower I need it to be able to handle the terrain of my property.
Way too quick, not comprehensive enough and too specific to ICE mowers. While you touched on the issues of "zero turn" with an extremely vague example, you need to demonstrate it more graphically; a beginner would be confused by such a short demonstration.
I am a beginner, and I understood completely. There is no issue with this demonstration, and of course he will be teaching toward a specific brand or model, he owns that one. I personally am not going to rent or purchase 10 mowers to show you how they all work similarly
Thanks for the tips I am from the City so it’s been challenging living in the Country and mowing with this zero turn machine 😟 my biggest problem is mowing a ditch do you have a video about this?
@BudMan420 Don't mow a slope greater than 15° either vertically or horizontally. You can slide and lose control, especially if you're inexperienced. Weed eaters are best for ditches.
Its super bad for the engine to be turned off and on at full throttle like you were doing in the video. It has to be at idle so excess gas doesnt get into the engine.
Um... nope. My Kohler has a carb but no choke cable. Smart choke. Next, if someone doesn't know a what a 3 point turn is they shouldn't be driving on the road. The damage to the turf mainly depends on the type of grass it is along with the moisture in it.
Information for beginners given in a COMPLETELY RANDOM order. If you're looking for step by step instructions on how to start up, and then drive a zero turn mower look elsewhere.
Sorry, but why would I buy a ZTM if I'm going to be making 3 point turns.. Beyond pointless to buy a ZTM if you're not using it as intended. The issue is you have no idea what you're doing
My wife likes to pump the choke button like 5 or 6 times when she starts the mower. I do it the way you are in this video. Yesterday, my wife and I could not start the mower so we left it overnight and were able to restart it in the morning. Do you know if pumping the choke can flood the engine?
Pumping the choke will not cause flooding and is pointless to do it. Turn your engine over a few times without the choke. And if it doesn’t start, pull the choke out and try it again, and as soon as it starts, turn the choke off immediately.
Best explanation I ever received about how to steer a zero turn was that it's like handle bars on a bike. When yo wanna go right, push forward with your left. When you wanna go left, push forward with your right.
I may start using that analogy. Haven’t heard that, thanks.
Another analogy I heard before was to operate your hands like you would when pushing/steering a shopping cart.
That's confusing because it's the opposite for a motorcycle lol
That might even be too easy of an explanation....lol
@ChrisJones-yt8zp On a motorcycle, if you push forward with your left hand, your bike doesn't turn right?
I am not understanding your comment.
