Master of Puppets isn't real music. It's unreal music.
And MOP beat Black Sabbath’s Paranoid as the greatest metal album of all time.🤘
@@nickchang5293 Exactly. The MOP album is in the Library of Congress.
@@Fister_of_Muppets yes and Metallica is the only band of the Big 4 that has accomplished this so far…but I’d love to see Slayer’s Reign in Blood in there too.
@@nickchang5293 rust in peace
NO !!!! No! No. Metallica is just rock n roll baby. It's all just rock n roll baby!
people say James hetfields voice in the black album era was the best. i agree but the fact that he has always improved vocally is awesome. to sing the same songs for 30+ years and make it sound fresh every performance is top tier
I think the Puppets era had the right mix of youth and grawl mixed with unbridled anger.
I really love Jame's vocals on AJFA
I like his voice on Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning. So raw.
imo live vocal wise nothing beats Seattle 89. the thing that should not be , sanitarium even when they sang last caress by misfits his voice was awesome but record wise i have to say ajfa
his voice is defs not getting better over time.
I'm 16 now and I'm gonna try to learn this song in its entirety. This is my mountain i must conquer in my guitar journey
You can do it young man, I'm 50 and I started playing when I was your age. Good luck and have fun
Same as you. 15 now, 16 in a month. Started 2 months ago. Have the intro an the main riff at about 160 bpm
The best youtubers to learn this song from is Shred, Marty Schwarts, and Carl Brown (Guitarlessons365)
Also if you can’t read sheet music try TABS. I personally like TABS because it has numbers.
My best friend and I stayed up until 3 or 4 am and learned most of the Master Of Puppets album when we were 17 (minus the solos).
@@corneraction6765 Guitar Pro software is awesome also for learning. Depending on who wrote the tab.
Little sloppy overall, but Kirk pretty much nailed that solo. Can’t imagine playing an already difficult tune at a higher bpm constantly. I would honestly be okay with them only playing the most popular, say, 2 or 3 tracks from each album and slowing the bpm down to a playable level.
You the phrase "outside looking in?" I was outside of Louder Than Life and I'll say, when you are there, you don't care if Kirk is sloppy cause the energy just extends for a 3 mile radius. It's crazy. Now, looking back at the footage, Whiplash was first and RTL was second. RTL was somewhat sloppy but you can't really slow it down much.
@@wdgaminganddisneyhistory6024 I think it’s even more important to get the bpm right with the fastest songs. 5-10 bpm with a song that’s already fast makes it almost impossible to play cleanly.
I remember the first time they did “Spit Out the Bone” live in Europe during the 2017 WorldWired Tour and it sounded quite a bit off from the recorded track, but it was still a noble effort. Imagine their rehearsal and tuning to maintain such grueling bpm for that track on stage!
Saying "Prague, Czechoslovakia" is a bit like saying "Moscow, USSR."
Neither of them have existed for 30 years
Just to be clear Czechia and Slovakia are 2 different countries
And Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for almost 2 decades.
@@marshaltito7369 you mean almost 3
@@davidstupka2786 Yes, accidentally hit 2 instead of 3, my mistake.
Czechoslovakia June 2 2022? Shred lives in a parallel universe where Czechoslovakia hasn't split into Czechia and Slovakia. Interesting....
So do I. I hate when they change country and city names - to me it's still Bombay, not Mumbai.
@@hinjurock70 lmao It’s not really the country changing names it split into 2
Yes its definitely real music. It's not just a couple power chords put together, it goes way beyond that. It has become the anthem for Metal.
It’s the most compositionally interesting music besides classical lol, so people who don’t think metal is real music, also wouldn’t think classical is real music.
For them to still sound this good at 60 years old....showing the younger bands how to put on a show STILL
Because of Stranger Things "Master of Puppets" has likely become Metallica's anthem song by default, if it wasn't already. I think it's guaranteed to be played at all upcoming shows for the next year. I bet the Four Horsemen are glad they aren't feeling the pressure to play "Sandman" now to appease the non-metal masses that attend their shows.
Metallica not playing that song at any show since its release would likely have resulted in a riot.
In the 90 they didn't play this song often
I wanted to riot when I went to a Metallica show in 2017 that didn’t start the setlist with Creeping Death😤
@@drfaustus2964 and fans did indeed riot :)
I’m a huge fan of Stranger Things and to have Metallica in the final episode made me proud to of been a Metallica fan since my teens (I’m now in my very late 40’s) I’m so happy that a newer generation are being exposed to this music, to me metal is the highest level of skill to play so fast and in sync with such power and sheer dedication.. how many other bands are still going decades later that can still play like this! It is music at its best (I thought Creeping Death would of been a good choice for Eddie, hope he’s resurrected in season 5)
0:35 you wanted to say Czech Republic because Czechoslovakia is splited into 2 single countries already 29 years my friend
The lyrics to this song, one of James' greatest masterpieces, can be applied to so many addictions and vices
Glad another generation is discovering Metallica, long live Papa Het
Muahahahaha
In general I’ve always felt that the album was about external control. Ride the Lighting about negative predicaments/fear, and justice about betrayal between adults/authority and youth, with parental failure being the root. MoP =drug, Disposable Heroes = the government, Sanitarium = doctors, Leper Messiah = religious leader.
@@mrlt1151 sanitarium is basically about Depression imprisoning you into thinking that you are Crazy, Hallucinating, Stuck in time and imprisoned like In a Sanitarium.
@@8troll9 I can see schizophrenia, as he could be using 2 voices and the sane part of the subject is the one imprisoning the voices. The restless natives are part of him and violence that builds at the end being self harm. It still fits the overall “who’s pulling your strings” puppet master theme of the album.
People who say Metal isn’t Music: *Exist*
Everyone since the 70’s: *how often do we have to teach you this old man?*
Of course Metallica is real music. Metal is much more akin to classical than snobs will ever admit. I wonder what specific aspects of metal would make it “not music”. 🤔 I bet metal haters couldn’t even articulate this idea.
It's the heavy distortion - to people who aren't used to it, it sounds too noisy. I remember playing Metallica for an older jazz musician when I was 16 and he said "That's terrible - the guitars sound like machine guns". I said "Hell yeah! That's why it's so awesome!".
@@hinjurock70 lol
I know a guy who says the distortion in hard rock/metal gives him an "instant headache" and I've also heard him say that it's not "real music". He's actually a hobby guitarist. (primarily acoustic and clean non-distorted electric tones are his style) His own teenage son started turning him on to trying alternate tunings, i.e. drop D style and lower tunings, while using distortion...which was hilarious because then he was like "these metal guys think their so good and this is all it is". And I was like, yeah, well there's a HELL of a lot more to metal than just simple downtuned drop D style riffs. It's a simple fact that lots of metal styles require more skill than many other guitar-based genres.
After all these years, I still think Puppets is one the the overall best albums from the thrash scene, or just in metal period. I'll never forget the first time hearing it on cassette at 11 years old back in the 90's, I was completely blown away by Battery and of course the whole album.
@@yearginclarke
Master Of Puppets is the greatest metal album of all time - absolute perfection.
@@hinjurock70 I definitely agree!
MASTER..MAster…Maaster…maastrr…then to Kirk’s divine solo…the most profound musical poetry to my ears. Btw, I’ve heard people complain about Kirk overdoing the WAH pedal but I say it’s one of those things that you can’t get too much of if its done right like he does.
Plus he isnt using wah on Master of puppets..
@@oldfart6938 you’re referring to him not using it on this live performance, right?
Master Of Puppets the song and album is as iconic as it gets! 🤘🏼
Back in high school and throughout my 20s I played a ton of Metallica on guitar then stopped playing them for years, well it's funny because out all the ones I played the only one i remember how to play all the way through today is Master of Puppets.
0:35 Small correction: Czechoslovakia isnt a thing anymore, Prague is in the Czech Republic ^^
Love Hetfields solo's. has so much heart. like to live is to die. amazing solo
Whoever said this isn't real music isn't a real person..lol
We are Czechia, not Czechoslovakia anymore
I remember hearing Master of Puppets for the first time. Wow, what a feeling. I was totally blown away. It was akin to listening to a symphony!
Keep it up shreeeed 🤘🏼
i saw them 3 times LIVE in late 80's. Twice in a sports arena and once at the foot ball stadium..i was in the PIT..when I look up ...The entire arena from front to back..EVERYBODY
was JUMPing up and down BANGING their heads....
At the football stadium..we were around 30 yard line to the side on the second floor.
The ENTIRE STADIUM was BANGING their Heads from front to back..
I thought the damn stadium was going to collapse because it was shaking so hard.
So we went to the PIT..becuase it was SAFER. lmao
Ive been to many. many concerts....NOBODY brings the house down metallica.
I turn all my friends onto Metallica..They had a song on a multi UNKNOWN metal bands.
Then Kill Em ALL came out. I was the only kid that HAD the Album for a long time.
People was wondering what kind of Crazy....THRASH/PUNK/Speed METAL I was listening to. They were still into typical hair bands...VH and stuff like that.
I noticed Riff Lord Hetfield pauses his down picking at times during the verses. Never noticed this before.
He plays the riff quite differently live nowadays, using single notes played with pull-offs and hammer-ons instead of sliding power chords. Thats where the pauses come from. And does some up strokes for chords here and there. The palm muted chuggy bits are still all downpicks though
I think he was holding
An iron maiden cassette
Please do leper messiah next
Love ur vids xx
I honestly used to think that. I was into Judas Priest, Zeppelin, Sabbath; older hard rock. Them my little brother (who had just bought a copy of Justice) gave me his old MOP tape. Turns out the boy knows his shit! Now I’m a metal head, got into Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax…
Hey Shred I enjoy listening to your takes on different metal songs and from Metal bands. I love Metallica and growing up my Dad always played the classic rock radio station in his truck and in the car “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing else Matters” played all the time and I loved those songs with out realizing it was Metallica. I have explored there past albums and love under rated songs like Ride the Lighting, phantom lord, trapped under ice, escape, creeping death, blackened, disposable heroes and the shortest straw. There is so many other songs I can mention from them but those songs I mentioned stood out to me. Which is another under rated song that should get some attention?
the bad thing is that i was 16,a hardoce metalhead and a massive metallica fan, they had put me into metal a few years ago,when...the load came out....
Well considering the era,
Most would of thought it devil music.
Which is funny because the premise of the song is kinda straight edge.
Most of what I listen to has heavy distortion,
As I’ve gotten older,
I’ve noticed
That with that type of music,
it takes a few listens to key into the groove.
Even with my favorite bands.
With something more melodic and clean I know I like it or not,
almost right
away.
I can see why some wouldn’t take the time to sus it out.
Distorted tones are like wine or liquor,
Pop is like candy.
In the 80s thrash was new and scary.
Music is music,
Whether you like it or not.
I read this article about how there is less drug and alcohol use in music these days.. My first response was.. well duh.. we all grew up listening to our favorite artists agonize over their problems.. and even watched a few of them die. The rest of the time they were teaching us about ear protection.
Love your channel, btw Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for 30 years, Prague is in Czech Republic. iirc Cliff Burton's family was from Czechoslovakia though
Hell yeah it’s music. A lot of people think metal is all screaming and anger but then they hear masterpiece like puppets and go oh it’s more than that. The Charismatic voice on UA-cam said in a video she though metal was all about anger until hearing one and fade to black she had no idea Metal could express so many different emotions.
I remember when they only used to play the first two verses and then move on to another song. I'm glad they got back to playing the whole thing.
shred do a video on the new megadeth song. it has the same melody as black Friday from peace sells.
If u really want to see papa het soloing, watch the live version of "The ecstacy of gold" you won't regret it
Fr, Papa Het is a fucking legend
The same people who say that master of puppets or metal in general isn't real music are the same people who listen to modern rap and pop
First song I learned on tabs many years ago, way before it was cool lol
It was always cool! Just fewer people knew it was cool back then🤘🏻
8:00 PANCAKES, GO! (and if you still don't know why he says that, look up "Cliff Burton and the pancakes story" on UA-cam.
Battery is a "Middle 16th" right? Isn't that what the masters did? Please correct me if I am wrong....
Can you breakdown
Am i evill-Diamond head
Being able to aggressively deliver meaningful lyrics, and dynamic melodic music with balls and attitude with a killer vocal is not to be taken lightly.
..Well said..
If someone says metal isn't real music just play them Orion or Call of Ktulu. Obviously there are many other songs that could be played, but those popped into my head.
did you say czechoslovakia?
James can solo his ass off! He does the solo on Orion and Whiskey in a Jar 🏺 if I’m not mistaken?
Metallica's technical af
If you take their chord progs/sequences, percussion and time sigs - it's like epic Medieval Disco.
James started playing single notes in the verse riff instead of chords... still sounds cool.
master of puppets is literally the only song I actually like from metallica, and just because I don't particularly have any fondness for their music, I'd be a complete fucking idiot to ignore their massive and profound influence on the genre of music I most enjoy. for me, just like my disdain for the beatles, not liking their artwork isn't the same as not respecting it.
the hilarity of youtube autoflagging the above comment as harassment but completely silent when I typed out that I am going to kill myself. priorities dammit! it's ok to kill myself but I better not be mean to myself while I slit my wrists
Disdain - the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect; contempt.
What youre saying is an oxymoron and something an angsty teen would come up with.
4:18 “robert IS my master” 😏 hahahaha
I wonder how many times Shred will do a master of puppets video
Excellent drumming from mr Ulrich
lol you must be deft or ignorant
I laughed when you said kirk needs wah as I was thinking how nice it was that he wasn't using one.
In that scene he’s not holding Master of puppets. He is holding iron maiden piece of mind
can you do Muse - Citizen erased (live 2015)
a song I never get tired of one of my favorite Metallica songs
the worst thing is that he said czechoslovakia :(
You can go all the way back to "The Call of Ktulu" and hear their musical genius \m/
Interest level in checking out Stranger Things reduced to absolute zero.
Oh boy would you be surprised as to what you miss as a Metalfan :)
Worth checking it out
Metal is the only true foam of music. Metal Unites, it inspires and empowers it also consuls and medicates. No other form of music invokes as much emotion as metal.
"Sit down Lars" one of the greatest quotes ever 🤣
omfg i was there in prague
If I would have never heard/seen "Master Of Puppets" on the 'Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge' VHS, during the '89 Seattle show (Damn that was a mouthful lol) I may have never picked up the guitar. Facts. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, "Not real music".
Isn’t MOP critically considered a Revolutionary Metal “Paradigm Shift”??
Kirk's got no time for wah in this song. It's too fast! They have sped up all of their songs when played live since The Black Album came out.
Also, to speak to people not accepting metal as real music just comes down to a dislike of noise and protest. Especially combined. If they can't understand it, they discount it. If it speaks against their comfortability they also don't want to hear it. Especially looking back at that time in history when metal and punk came about as a protest by the late boomers and Gen X-ers against their parents moral superiority after winning ww2 but then still not fixing the inequalities in society. And nothing has yet been fixed and it keeps getting worse but people don't want to hear it and do anything about it.
Are they tuned down half a step? (edit) Ah you said they were, I didn't notice.
haha i was there. My very insane 3rd metallica show.
What a night, what a setlist
that was my first Metallica show and it was fricking amazing \m/
It’s the 4th of METALLICA …fn best line ever.
Hey Shred I’m thinking about getting your music lessons. I just don’t want to sell my soul to you. I know it’s probably a joke but I take that type of stuff seriously.
I’m a drummer and I have an acoustic guitar. Do you think you can teach me and perhaps I can keep my soul? Lol
Good lecture
This is the best live performance of this song in a long while.
How about The Day That Never Come?
"good songwriting, you cant get away with that anymore" xDD
The pauses are definitely a blues influence.
Everyone: This song is about the struggle from drug addiction
Papa Het: Pancakes GO
there skeptical because they don't have enough knowledge of it, but i think internet,(especially youtube) is very slowly, but surely changing that
Almost 60 they still play good live, n its metal music, even rock band at this age cannot delivered anymore
Hold on the definition of music is multiple instruments or voices put together to make a pleasant sound, Metal is but things like modern pop should question if it is music
Phrygian and all that why musical progression names must be named so complicated
Cause they were named in either Latin or Italian
He sounds like Joakim from Sabaton in this one
Beethoven and Bach, Wagner all metal to the bone. The toccata and Fugue and the 5 symphony are metal movements
I think it goes back to the ACDC, Manson and Priest smears back in the day for all kinds of evil stuff.
Manson is the only one here that should be considered evil because he is.
He liked to get his girlfriend pregnant and then have her get an abortion.
He’s a serial baby murderer, so he can go to hell. The vast majority of other rock and metal bands are a-ok.
Don't forget Kiss. Parents absolutely loathed that band and their "satanic imagery"
Wrong era for Manson, dude.
That was awesome!
Czechoslovakia??? OMG Borat was right)))
To be honest it kinda started when the parents wanted their kids to listin to their favorite music and/or conditioned to like other music. So when the parent want their kid to hate metal. They teach its bad from a young age. It's just up to us to re-find metal.
Check out Matteo Mancuso I'm telling you Shred you'll be very intrigued by his playing!!!
Metal is the MOST important music in my life,, I was 8 when i saw Metallica for the first time in Toronto.. Master of Puppets tour
wapper of puppets
Is 70's-80's glam hair metal considered music?
'Sit down Lars,' 😂😂😂
OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, why does no one know that Czechoslovakia isn't a thing anymoooooore
Fun fact: if you remove the r in Stranger Things, you get St Anger Things.
Czechslovakia is gone since 1993 right now it is only Czech Republic and Slovakia
How can you say no to “Pancakes, Go!”
masterpiece
And pushing 60 they still shred \m/
it was in czechia czeckoslovakia doesn't exist anymore
I've loved Metallica for over thirty years and at this point for the first time ever I'm actually sick of hearing master of puppets now. Its like they have only one song now 🤦🏻🤷🏻♂️
Wait until you see their performance in Austria-Hungary.
