the reason why so many metallica songs are in E (even nowadays) is because that's the lowest note you can play on guitar in standard tuning. so naturally it sounds heavy, which is what they go for
Orion almost follows a Rondo structure, like Beethoven's Pathetique, A-B-A-C-A. Think that's why I loved Orion so much having some classic music love. Also, I heard Cliff's Mom asked for him to put something that her and Dad could dance to. So the middle movement has that waltz like pattern... so cool.
I've always heard this as a symphonic structure with 4 distinct movements (although the last 2 are very short). The first 2 are obvious, the last solo is the whole 3rd movement (scherzo)- brand new, aggressive riff underneath. The 4th movement is the reprise of the riff from movement 1, but without the off-beat.

Thank you for taking the time to touch on the lyrics - one of my favourite things about Metallica is that you can go from headbanging to solemnly reflecting on the lyrics in the same song.
Doug, you REALLY need to do And Justice For All (the whole album) next - it's the natural progression of this, and was where their lyricism and complexity of songwriting reached it's height.
Kirk’s Solo on Damage Inc. is one of my favorite Metal Solos and I think it’s a perfect solo for a Thrash Metal song. And as a drummer i have spent many nights playing along to this album practicing . I feel like Master of Puppets album has a great variety of metal songs. Has Speedy 180bpm type songs, has some songs with elements of Prog like Battery has the acoustic guitar sounding intro, has some Heavy Metal style songs like The Thing that should not be. Orion I think is one of my favorite instrumentals and I would also say brings a bit of a Prog Metal Element to the record. Sanitarium is one of the songs that is slower tempo has more melodic feel and a song that when I want a slow metallica song Sanitairum is great to me. I think this album is a great example how to make a complete album where every song from Start to end has good writing, good musicianship, every body is on there game in there prime on this album I believe . I feel like the when I compare the Ride The Lighting album To Master of puppets . I feel like Ride has a Icey Stone Cold , Electrifiying feel. Master feels like the recordings are better overall sound quality than Ride. If Ride feels like Icey Rage then Master feels Like Firey Rage if that makes Sense
Thank you Doug for your wonderful listening party of Metallicas Master of puppets! Especially i like to thank you for last comment on Metalmusic. A lot of the Metalsongs is about how we treat each other and the anger about how bad we all at this. This is why I am a Metalfan since over 40 years! I love your show! Keep on going! Keep on rocking!! Greetings from Germany! Ralph
Would love to see you react to the following metal songs which are all quite interesting compositionally: Galneryus - Angel of Salvation the full live version (adapts Tchaikovsky's violin concerto) Lovebites - Swan Song with Chopin Intro (adapts Chopin's Revolutionary Etude and Dvorak's New World Symphony) Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars live studio version (well orchestrated melodic metal)
What a tragedy when they lost Cliff. It was the beginning of the end, for me. As you say, he was the glue that held them together, and he was a great composer. This album was their masterpiece. This album blew me away, as a teenager. I'd never heard anything like it. It marked me for life. So sad they couldn't create anything better after. They lost their soul. Jason tried his best to 'replace' Cliff, but they did't allow him to fully integrate into the band. And it showed. I saw them on the "And Justice..." tour. One of the best concerts ever, and a lot because of Jason. He's a beast, but they never really incorporated him into the band. After, it was too late.
My God…I cannot explain how much I enjoyed that whole ride. You are very entertaining, my friend. It simply cannot be overstated…Master of Puppets is not just arguably Metallica’s (or all of metal’s) best album, it is literally 1 of the greatest albums, across all time periods and genres, EVER. Anthrax:Among the Living please 🙏. I don’t think Doug has done Anthrax before and this album from beginning to end is so solid. They are the last of the “Big 4” of this era that needs some attention.
Anthrax and their influence from hardcore tends to turn people away because they are less melodic, but Among The Living is such a monster album. Every song is great and there is no one better at writing a “mosh part.” They had a hard time following up in the way that the other 3 bands did, so they are less prominent these days, but in 87 they were just as huge as the others and they deserve more recognition.
@@oscardiggs246 for sure. The one good thing about them not staying as big as they were was the ability to still see them in a small venue. Saw them in a club of about 1500 people about 10 years ago. Charlie is a monster drummer and it was such a treat to see in a small room.

Load and Reload both were entirely in Eb.
And then comes St Angers, which is in Drop C/Drop A (or Ab?) etc
Which songs are in Db?
I think some Load or Reload songs were tuned lower like Devil's Dance and Bad Seed
@@MBBGun14
You're right. I forgot about those. Devils dance I think is D and bad seed is, I believe even lower. Like C# maybe.
@@metalzonemt-2
I think - human and dirty window are C#. Maybe bad seed, too. Most of st anger is in drop C, if i remember right and I think invisible kid might be the lowest tuning they've used. Its in drop G or G#
It doesn't get any better than this, and it will never ever get old! I'd love to hear more early Metallica on your channel, preferably Ride the Lightning. Thank you for everything you do Doug.
been watchin a buncha these vids back to back! luv yer insight and such..
Love the Yoda shout out, I do!! And your assessment of this album's themes and emotional currents and good metal in general feels spot on to me. Good metal and punk have righteous anger. Welcome, headbanger brother!
As an early OG member of your channel, I must say that I'm glad to listen to these vids, I'm an avid fan of you and Metallica, there is other all time classic album to listen like this, love the format. Have fun and love music
I grew up in the 80s with this line up. It would have been great to hear what this version could have grown into. Cliff is definitely missed and a huge influence on these guys. Thanks for sharing.
James said Leper is about TV evangelist
There are comparisons to be drawn however
Maybe not in the way Doug perceived
I always thought of evangelicals too. But now I think of the orange buffoon too.😂
100%, the republicans and trump use religion to fool people into voting for them - ‘Corinthians Two’ anyone? 😂
It's clearly about the business of religion. And the pinnacle of that is TV evangelists, so it makes sense.
Leper Messiah is on my Top 5 Metallica songs. Such an insultingly underrated song.
I got to see cliff in 1986. His arrangements are untouchable. He was the master of his milieu and there will never be another.
Dr Doug: The whole album is in E, and I don’t even care!
Me: Hell Yeah! Cause these are the really damn good E’s!
I feel like the when I compare the Ride The Lighting album
To Master of puppets . I feel like Ride has a Icey Stone Cold , Electrifiying feel.
Master feels like the recordings are better overall sound quality than Ride. If Ride feels like Icey Rage then Master feels
Like Firey Rage if that makes
Sense
I THOUROUGHLY ENJOY your reaction; its like im listening to this for the first time… and time is fleeting
Doug went from "I cannot stand the double kick" to "I like the double kick" in just a couple of years. Great achievement man!!
Ralph
RUST IN PEACE NEXT!!!
Yes please.
Yes
HELL YES
He doesnt like mustaines voice 😭
Yessss we need this
Nice! Rust in Peace by Megadeth is another album that i remembered loving every song!
Would love to see you react to the following metal songs which are all quite interesting compositionally:
Galneryus - Angel of Salvation the full live version (adapts Tchaikovsky's violin concerto)
Lovebites - Swan Song with Chopin Intro (adapts Chopin's Revolutionary Etude and Dvorak's New World Symphony)
Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars live studio version (well orchestrated melodic metal)
Mr. Doug Helvering: You are AWESOME!
"Suffer for this glory, you will"

God I love this man xD
My God…I cannot explain how much I enjoyed that whole ride. You are very entertaining, my friend.
It simply cannot be overstated…Master of Puppets is not just arguably Metallica’s (or all of metal’s) best album, it is literally 1 of the greatest albums, across all time periods and genres, EVER. Hard stop.
Really enjoyed these two videos!
The real song titles:
1) Back to the Front!
2) Secret Bowie Tribute
3) Burton Baroque Waltz
4) Too hard for Lars to play live.
🤣
34:00 Those soft tones are called "volume swells" done on electric guitar. They are made by turning the volume knob up and then back down as you play a note, It gives something like a violin feeling.
As someone who was raised on classical music and for the past 30 years has been a die hard Metallica fan, I really appreciate your reactions. Great to explore the classical components of this music. Hopefully you will keep reviewing their albums. and hey,,, the "Black" album actually gets out of "E"! lol
James recently said that Disposable Heroes was inspired by watching pro football with the announcer saying these players are disposable heroes on the grid iron. So in his words, James implies football and war have similarities.
oh hey, cool seeing you here! love all the concert vids
Football is the sport of war...not for the violence, but that the goal is land acquisition. Go take that hill or go get that first down.
Another theory I've heard thrown around is that James was referencing the direction to (or rather, _not_ to) wipe.
Your summary is perfect Doug. You have so eloquently summarized why I love metal music so much.
I love your channel, I love listening to you describe what you hear.
Disposable Heroes has such an epic guitar solo.
You're becoming a metalhead 😊 To many metalheads, me included, love classical music.
Thanks for such an insightful review. I've heard the album hundreds of times but never thought about it on your level. Way to tie it all together.
Cliff said that the intro was based upon a piece by Bach
I love this reactions videos, because it's the closer i can get of that feeling of listening to this masterpiece of an album for the first time. Thanks
Love your reactions. Its like listening to good music with a good friend!
It is Metallica's best album and easily one of the top ten metal albums of all time. If someone asks me what metal sounds like I'll put this on. Not only does have the power and power cords but it has the subtle too, like Black Sabbath.
Speechless!!! This album… Wow!!!
Damage Inc is the music corporate industry
Doug, FYI. EVERY person who watched this already knew every word, every cymbal crash on two, and if you're like me, was headbanging remembering the first time hearing this thinking "Holy Shit" I love that you love this album. 🤘
As somebody that was an early teen metalhead when this was released, I've just found your channel and been going down the rabbit 🕳️ of your metal listens and I enjoy them thoroughly. Something that has always stood out to me is that rhythm guitar sound...some of the best sounding metal guitar ever recorded.
The intro to ‘damage inc’ that you said reminded you of Bach, was written and performed by Cliff Burton on bass. Yep. That was bass. He was just a beast
I graduated in 86 jamming to master of puppets
Loved this episode. The first three Metallica albums are all different and incredible in their own way. Rodrigo & Gabriela do a cover of Orion that rivals the original in just pure emotion.
Doug you are great. You interpret the spirit of Metal like few others. I congratulate you for spreading music in such an enjoyable and fun way. But above all with the heart.🤘
Loved this Ride….glad to see everyone enjoy your reaction! This album shaped my musical enthusiasm and love for METAL. Big THANKS TO YOU AND METALLICA for making this.
Delivered as he promised. 👌 Thanks once again mister. 🙏
In month I will fly to Madrid for their concert and it will be my third time to see Metallica live. I'm excited like it was my first time. 😁😁
Hope you will do more whole album reactions, happy for your attitude. 👍
Best Regards from Czech Republic 🇨🇿💪🇨🇿
Anthrax:Among the Living please 🙏. I don’t think Doug has done Anthrax before and this album from beginning to end is so solid. They are the last of the “Big 4” of this era that needs some attention.
Anthrax and their influence from hardcore tends to turn people away because they are less melodic, but Among The Living is such a monster album. Every song is great and there is no one better at writing a “mosh part.”
They had a hard time following up in the way that the other 3 bands did, so they are less prominent these days, but in 87 they were just as huge as the others and they deserve more recognition.
@@oscardiggs246 for sure. The one good thing about them not staying as big as they were was the ability to still see them in a small venue. Saw them in a club of about 1500 people about 10 years ago. Charlie is a monster drummer and it was such a treat to see in a small room.
We all grew up with Jim and Tammy Fae Baker back in the day. There were also plenty of Cults that made the news.
Edit: Which make me want to request "Send Me Your Money" by Suicidal Tendancies.
Or listen to "TV Crimes" by Black Sabbath featuring Ronnie James Dio.
