Metallica's BEST written song | ONE

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video I watch what could be Metallica's BEST written song, "ONE." We'll check out a live performance of the track recorded in Seattle, Washington in 1989. "ONE" is about the movie "Johhny Get Your Gun", an anti-war film about a man who loses his limbs in world war 1. Considering the current Russia/Ukrainian war, this is a reminder of the high price we pay if we're unable to resolve conflict with civil discourse.

Oh Shredmaster, I believe you're forgetting the beautiful Orion.
I think you'd have to divide this into two categories... best metal and best metal "ballad" and as much as I LOVE "One", I think both "Fade to Black" or "Master of Puppets" are superior. As for best bangin' tune, yeah, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Harvester of Sorrow or Blackened. Those first 4 albums were all masterpieces. It's almost impossible to pick a favorite
@@mrdraper4633 very true. Orion is the Rosetta stone for my moods- it doesn't matter what kind of mood I'm in, there's a section of the song that fits it. Imo, that's what makes it the best written song. My absolute favorite in general would have to be Outlaw Torn, although it is also written extremely well.
"Stay strong my Ukrainian brothers"
You really should do your research on this conflict.. Ukraine, for one, is no democracy..
You should review To Live Is To Die
I can't even pick a best Metallica song. Their music means so much to me for a variety of reasons. James and Kirk are the reason why I play guitar. My Mom died when I was 12, and I found comfort in Metallica's music. Then I found out I have a lot in common with James. People can make their stupid, lame, recycled jokes about Metallica all they want. Fact is they are the biggest, best selling, most successful Metal/Rock band on the planet. Period! They probably inspired more kids to play guitar, bass, and drums than any other band. They do it their way! Zero fucks given. Their diversity is amazing. And they are fantastic song writers! Enter MegaDave is better comments.
I'm feel the same brother. Metallica will always be one of my favorite band if not my favorite of all time. I've spent countless hours learning and playing their music and watching their live shows. I've owned every album. I've never gotten the chance to see them live though. However I am getting to see megadeth, Lamb of God, and Trivium in May. Metallica is the last one on my bucket list. Rock on brother 🤘🤘
That's why Metallica rules and ruled!
🤘
Exactly, there wasn't, there's no and there never ever will be better band than Metallica. Period.
I agree with you about metallica, but I hope your not trashing Dave, because he is amazing too
@@MrRobcix1 I love metallica, but it sad to think that there will be no one better than them ever. I hope that there will be a better metal band in the future at some point
My personal favorites are
1. Blackened
2. Harvester of sorrow
3. Frayed ends of sanity
I think he likes and justice for all
I would change "Harvester" to "The Thing..." but for the other 2 I give you credit!
Color my world blackened
"Sinister riff"
HEAR THEM CALLING ME

My Metallica top 5
1.One
1.Fade to black
1.Nothing else matters
1.Welcome home
1.Master of Puppets
2. Every other song
Include The Day That Never Comes too.
Too much underrated song
That is a very good top 5
You might get talked shit about because they're popular songs. But sometimes songs are popular for a good reason. All these songs are popular for very good reasons.
poser ahh list
I like for whom the Bell tolls because of this one line James sings...
"Take a look to the sky just before you die....its the last time you will."
And
"For a hill, men would kill why they do not know... Stiffened wounds test their pride"
Thank you for mentioning your support to us Shred! Greetings from Ukraine! Victory shall be ours!
Probably the best composition in the history of metal and I'm not even kidding.
nah, it’s great but not even remotely close to being the peak of metal
I'd argue Opeth's Bleak or Blackwater Park, but this one is great too.
Or Orion
@KenoxProductions Those two songs are fucking amazing. I feel like One digs deep knowing that it's based on the experience of an actual soldier. And probably similar to many other War Vets. My great grandfather was a WW vet who experienced major trauma from his time in the war so this song hits hard as fuck.
Holy shit Lars' drums sound sooo good man.
7:58 is one of the most metal moments ever.
One is the Stairway to Heaven of metal music and you can't change my mind
"Sanitarium" still gives me goosebumps to this day.
I am 43 years old and I've been listening to one since I was in the 5th grade. A true masterpiece. All of the work and thought that went into the creation of the song is amazing. Much appreciated by me. Love this song. Pure genius. Though my favorite Metallica song is Orion.....R.i.p Cliff.......
Same story here. Had been into Maiden and helloween already. But with this song, Metallica became my favorite band.
Cliff 'em all, baby!!
This song and the AJFA album is big part of my childhood, at 13yrs old (back in the 90's) my dad and his mates LOVED metallica and I kept hearing about this song, 'One'. I decided to ask my after-school guitar tutor if we could we learn this song.
The way the song starts clean with the verse riffs and the melodic solo passages getting progressively more intricate over them, the heavy crushing tones in the choruses, the soaring harmony guitar sections before the BRUTAL double bass and guitar breakdown... the epic Hammett tapping guitar solo.. it all perfectly captured everything there was to love about metal music, 80's guitar hero's and improving in your technique as a player.
Side note: My dad and his mates were pretty impressed with my chugging skills on the double-bass breakdown riff, too - so it even brought me closer to my father, which is a cool thing to think about \m/
I have a few things to say, so forgive me if I get long winded.
#1- I've said this before and I'll say it again and again. Some of the most beautiful and captivating music ever made are Metallica harmony sections.
#2- One is definitely one of Metallica's greatest songs, but I always seem to fall back to Ride The Lightning. The Call of Ktulu and Fade to Black are my favorite Metallica songs.
#3- Lastly, whenever I hear this song I'm usually taken back in my mind to the Justice tour. I got to see them in '89 with Queensryche opening. They hadn't gotten to the round stage yet, it was more of an arc that allowed them to get closer to the fans. I remember catching a crowd surfer's boot in the eye and having the shiner to show for it for days. One of my best buddies, right in front of me, reaching the fence and getting to sing Seek and Destroy while Papa Het held the mic. What I remember most is being lucky enough to end up in a spot that I could see James straight on during the breakdown at the end. "Darkness-Imprisoning me" You know, that part. I'm sure this was before his arm was burned because they had pyro set up to either side of him, shooting up like cannons. It was intense, surreal. An amazing memory.
Guitar Hero 3 introduced me to this song and changed my life forever. I learned how to play guitar and this was one of the first songs I tried to learn
Definitely in my top 3 favorite Metallica songs of all time
It’s definitely one of metal greatest song in general, the structure , lyrics and meaning are all blended together to perfection!
You know its gonna be good when its seattle 1989
All songs of Metallica is good. %90 songs of Metallica are masterpiece. But yeah "One" is "The One!" Not just Metallica, I think best metal&rock song ever.
Everyone should watch the movie that One is based off of. Johnny got his Gun. It will mess you up.
“Harvester ” is my Favorite Metallica Song 🎵🤘🏽🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️….Speakers just don’t get loud enough for that song 😂
Dude I knew it, you really pick the best. We used to blast this song every night when we were young.
I personally think To Live is to Die + Dyer's Eve is their best work, but One is up there
Thats an unpopular opinion lol. I can dig it.
One cannot help but headbang to this song. Period.
One is my favourite but And Justice For All I think is the most complex
back in the
lighter days 🕯️
clean strat
lead guitar days töö
It’s gotta be “Fight Fire With Fire” for me. It’s got almost everything
This song was my introduction into metal. Still my favorite Metallica tune, and Metallica album. This song never Gets old.
I LOVE METALLICA!! BEST BAND EVER!!
Metallica is what brought me and my two best friends together when we were teenagers. Metallica will always have a top spot in my heart, and this song will always live as number ONE!!!
My favorite song since day 1 of listening to them
Saw them on this tour. While the concert was going on, the scales of justice was being erected in the back. When they started playing this song, the scales of justice started coming down, hence the explosions and such. Best concert ever.
This song made me want to play the drums. This song is so powerful 🤘🤘
I think it's ride the lightning. The mid section just contrasts perfectly with the verse and chorus
Shortest Straw is my favourite Justice track. Very underrated in general
I forgot how good this song is. I didn't realize how many modulations there are. Its crazy because it seems like James didn't really know much theory, yet he was able to write this. Dude must have a great ear.
Cliff helped immensely don't forget earlier on and James could absorb everything plus more. Truly great ear for riffs
I love the thin Lizzy influence connecting the ballad section and the machine gun section
Your videos bring me joy lol please continue to make them
It's a tossup between Master Of Puppets, One, Outlaw Torn, and FiXXXer (the latter two being some of the best metal grooves ever, showing that you can make heavy and deep metal music without playing at warp speed and changing time signatures every other bar).
I heard this song/theme was also inspired by James' fear of being lost in his thoughts; cut off from the world in your own thoughts Jung describes as "the quintessence of horror", this case talking about what happened to Nietzsche.
A lot of people don’t know that the film is based on a book. Johnny got his gun.
Ha! Your sense of humor cracks me up brother, keep up the good work!
Title of the movie is Johnny got his Gun, actually.
I think this, and Sanitarium are worthy magnum opus. The latter has intro that mimic the sounds of the cell doors shut and locked one after another with the intro solos that are so clean they sound like the inner thoughts racing through the minds of the inmates. Creepy but beautiful.
There’s also a lot of time signature changes.
Yes it is metallica one the best metal song by far
how does this dude not have 1M subs yet
Definitely one of their best.
Thank you, Shred. We are very appreciative your support, and support of the whole western world in general. And Im going to shred untill the end using my new, 30-round axe. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 Peace
Definitely its such a perfect metal song from start to finish. The video adds so much to the whole thing i think live its great but i remember the first time seeing it and it leaves an impression. Here in ireland at slane was the best ive seen it in ages
Nicely done, dude!
It is the best Metallica song. It is the most fun to play
So lucky I saw them on the Justice and Black tour.. Just blessed to experience shit next gen will never. Memories are better than materials..
They have many great songs but come to think of it, this may be their best. What makes Metallica stand out from other metal bands is the creativity in their music, and the attention to crafting meaningful lyrics.
The time that played this for a live audience and got beat out by Jethro Tull was by far the best I’ve seen of this song live..
One is My favorite song not just Metallica but my favorite song of all time
Definitely one of their best! One of THE best songs ever!
A general rule of thumb with Metallica songs is to see if it was performed at Seattle 89, do creeping death Seattle 89 next please
Creeping death Seattle 1989 is great but Creeping Death Moscow 1991 is even better IMO and successfully lead to the downfall of the USSR
This song has most of the Metallica elements. It's a long song, has harmonies, a tapping pentatonic solo, agressive and sad lyrics, a E chord gallop riff, a slow and clean part.
It's like wordering why Hallowed Be Thy Name is the best Iron Maiden song, apart of being excellent and flawless, it has the Maiden's signature. The same with ONE.
0:19 "Johnny Get Your Gun" is incorrect. The correct title of the movie is "Johnny Got His Gun".
I knew it! 🤦♂️
Title is a reference to the saying Johnny Get Your Gun tho lol
In my opinion, "Fixxxer" and "The Outlaw Torn" are their best, I really, really, really love those songs! Very underappreciated songs...
🤔
Oooooohhh more metallica please I love it
Imo disposable heroes is their best written song
MT notes:
Key of B minor (C# F#)
Classical phrasing
Arppegios
Modulation
Power chords
Guitar orchestration
E Phrygian mode
Blues Licks
Fk haven't listened to this in probably 5 years and forgot just how good it is
You're absolutely right!
Seattle 89 is my go to live version of Metallica. Has the right amount of youthful aggression and sounds great. I can almost smell the beer there. Plus James is in his prime stache and hair wise.
Master of Puppets is their best written song, IMHO. Thrashy, tells a story, heavy riffs, great intro, great solos.
"wah pedal is noticeably absent" is a brand new sentence
Shred what is your go to, favorite Metallica song? Also please keep em comin! I'm hoping ya do "Hot on your heels" by Steeler sometime before death. 🤘🙏
Imo their best written album. Complex, long, well structured and heavy af. Metallica was on their peak there. It's my all time favorite album by them.
My Metallica top 5
1- One
2- Master of Puppets
3- Harvester of sorrow
4- And justice for all
5- Fade to black
the base is sooo good
By far their best imo
all songs number 4 of the albums are kick *ss sort of ballads. one is one of the best. i consider one a power ballad
My favourite metallica's song
The answer is yes !
Absolutely "One" of their best songs. Their very best is No Remorse.
For me this is definitely top 5 songs of all time
Possibly even top 3 :D
Shreds booger was the most metal part of this
…..he’s got nothin left, lol thanx for that in-depth recap
my favorite version of this song, is the grammy awards one.
I would agree. their masterpiece imo.
I'm missing out on your enjoyment of some King Diamond commentary! Specifically the album era ; 'Abigail' through 'Conspiracy'.
Hey, awesome video, I have thought about joining your course to improve my knowledge but I just wondered is it all visual or do you have actual videos for it just because I’m visually impaired so yeah, keep on shredding!
My two favourites are one and fade to black
🎙️ 🎶 Aaahhhll the keys arre plaaayed, heeere, as Wuhuunnn.
'S Mu-sic Ther-reeeeeeee🎶
One and Fade to Black are equal. Complex musically, great flow between sections, great solos, perfect blend of clean/acoustic with heavy sounds, deep lyrics. In many ways I think fade to black might actually be better, and they wrote it barely at the age of 21, which amazes me as well.
Its a photo finish between One and MoP.
I dont need to state my case for either because you cant go wrong picking one or the other.
Full version of 2 when 🤘
For me the best show of metallica !!!
YESSSS!!!!!
Polar seltzer so good👍
The whole Justice album may have been an unexpected change after puppets, but it's some of the most musically heavy shit ever!
Before papa het, there was...THE LION
hey man can u do an episode on eye of the beholder? its such an underrated track
The best song in the world ever. Of any genre!
I don't care what anybody says Metallica is and has been the best fucking band in metal history. Every single album has its own uniqueness with songs that will stand the test of time. People hate on Lars Ulrich and say he's trash however in all honesty the man has inspired the drummers from your favorite bands.
One's lyrics are great, along with Fade to Black. But to me, The unforgiven has the best lyrics. That's like my life story written right there.
I agree that ONE is one of Metallica's best songs. Its a got a great anti-war vibe to it along with some killer music
Metallica = Modern day Mozart’s! 🤘
