Thank you for keeping this video up. I came across the term "plunderphonics" today on JerryTerry's "Redoin', and you video was a great synopsis.

sampling was around before rap music in experimental rock / jazz in the 60's, and rap popularized it in the 70's.

+VieuxBat it goes way back. Tchaikovsky "sampled" Wagner's "Victory at Sea" in his 1812 Overture.

Plunderphonics is the name that John Oswald chose, both as a nom de plume as well as a descriptive for HIS OWN WORK. Using "Plunderphonics" to describe microsampling, mashups or anything similar is like referring to any jazz song as "Milesdavis."
PS: Chic is not pronounced "chick." Have you been living in a lead-line bunker buried two miles beneath the lunar surface? Keep up the good work! :)

How do you talk about Plunderphonics without mentioning Negativland or People Like Us? Also, how do you talk about Plunderphonics without talking about what sound collage is?

Not to be that guy...But actually DJs extended the break so that people could dance to it at the block party, which led to the term "breakdancing." It was only later that the MC was added to rap over any of the DJ's mix. Next, the band name Chic is not pronounced "chick," but "sheek." It's a French word that means in style and elegant. The guitarist in that band is not "Neil" but "Niles."
