I want to thank your friend Nicholas for writing this song. And i want to thank you two for letting it be heard. Summer of 2018, i took a sporadic road trip to Georgia with my brother. This was one of my roadtrip songs. While there, we stayed with our grandpa and uncle (we've never met this uncle due to family disfunction) My uncle was a great man, we bonded quite a bit in the 2 days we were in town. I was looking forward to a relationship with him. Well, 2 weeks after we got back, i got a text at 4am from my grandpa that my uncle commited suicide. A year to date of my uncles death, cancer took my grandfathers. This song brings me close to tears every time i listen to it. I dont know what i was looking for in Georgia, but i know i found it. Live in love everyone, love people others have abandoned. Theyre the ones that need it most. RIP Uncle Mike.

If someones dies or a family pet dies, we tell our children here in Finland that "they were sent to America". I like it, it sounds comforting.
By the time when they grow they'll understand it.

I am moved so much by this music. My mothers' side of family come from West Virginia coal town. Grampa died of black lung disease. Gramma passed three years ago, just short of 100 years old, almost exact. she was born on a 4th of July. Passed on the 1st. Alzheimers and dementia took her from us at a time when we were only strangers to her. It was devastating for our family. My earliest memories are of Gramma cooking us biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Best meals I ever ate. I feel drawn to this type of folk music. Born from necessity during tough times, when people worked so hard they would have dropped if not for a distraction to allow even momentary escape from a life of hell. I want to be able to let my mom listen to all your wonderful songs. She just turned 82 herself in August. thank you for some fine entertainment. Wish I could do as you two do, so wonderful.

In case you like to sing along...i know i do:
When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence
about whether I was coming home
and I know now better than before
i don’t know lord what I’m looking for
It was red red rocking chair sittin’ on the porch
pickin’ as the bottle runs dry
and I go there for the free beer
but I don’t know lord what I’m doing here
There’s a train waiting as I walk the tracks
    freddie a callin’ to me
so I climbed on a bottle in my hand
why I left lord I’ll never understand
I caught that ride back to Tennessee
in the dark the wind and the rain
I caught that ride to the depths of the wind
goes to show you just can’t win
Oh, my Caroline I never should have left
and you should have never stayed with me gal
and I know now there’s two ways to be
live in love or die in misery
When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence
about whether I was coming home
and I know now better than before
i don’t know lord what I’m looking for

The more I've listened to this, I've realized something. It isn't about a dude hopping a train, it's about a guy getting drunk and hopping in front of a train . He talks about considering going back home, regret for leaving his love behind, but ultimately "caught that ride". I don't know lord what I'm doing here I believe refers to this life, this world. I was on the tracks sounds like indecision, but I see it as literal. I never should have left, perhaps he regrets his choice at the last moment. Just my two thoughts. "And I know now there's two ways to be, live in love or die in misery". He was a remarkably talented writer and musician, and I truly wish he were still around making this amazing beautiful music. Rest In Peace.

This song has a special place in my heart.
I used to play the guitar a bit when I was a teen, and this summer, after listening to this song for a about a hundred times, I decided to pick up the guitar once again just to play this song. I've played every day since then.
So, thank you Lost Dog Street Band for bringing music back into my life.

I have listened to this song about 40 times in the last week, it really is helping me get through a pretty dark time, such a refreshing change to hear real music and not some commercial crap.
    Much love from the UK

    Lyrics
So when I went down to Georgia I was on the fence
about whether I was coming home
and I know now better than before
i don’t know lord what I’m looking for
It was red red rocking chair sittin’ on the porch
pickin’ as the bottle runs dry
and I go there for the free beer
but I don’t know lord what I’m doing here
There’s a train waiting as I walk the tracks
    freddie a callin’ to me
so I climbed on a bottle in my hand
why I left lord I’ll never understand
I caught that ride back to Tennessee
in the dark the wind and the rain
I caught that ride to the depths of the wind
goes to show you just can’t win
Singin Oh, my Caroline I never should have left
and you should have never stayed with me yeah
and I know now there’s two ways to be
live in love or die in misery
    (first verse)

I'm so happy that this channel exists, I've recommended it so many people, I love so many of the artists that have been showcased on here, lost dog and Matt heckler, the hill country devil, Arlo and Sierra Ferrell the list goes on, but I stumbled upon this music and honestly it sounds cheesey but it was a time in my life when I really honestly needed to hear what these magnificent people had to sing and play, the channel isn't nearly popular enough, you've given exposure to so many phenomenal artists, maybe I'm just stoned and blasted but God bless gems on VHS man.
    Fucking love this shit

I just stumbled across this shit within the past few weeks. I had no fucking clue this good ass country music scene existed. I grew up listening to 90s CMT because that's what my mom always had on and i have a nostalgic soft spot for that stuff but I just assumed good country music died in the 70s. I've been listening to this shit nonstop for the past few days and unfortunately I ran out of weed a few days before that but god damn i'd love to get stoned and listen to this shit.

I’m just an average 18 year old kid trying to understand the world, my purpose, why there’s so much toxicity and lust in this world. Suffering from anxiety. It’s terrible knowing that nobody around me listens to this music. It’s so real and true and just beautiful. We dont needs drugs or money to be happy. To be rich in life you must love yourself and those around you, not compensate for what you’re missing with drugs, alcohol, money, etc.. None of that will ever bring true happiness to your life. Much love from Baltimore🙏🏻🤙🏼 Bless you guys.

This song motivated me to look for songs of Nicholas. His work is captivating. I lost a good friend along the way too, when we were young. He never left my heart and he too was a musician. He played guitar, even in a style, that reminds me a little bit of Nicholas. He was very empathetic, helpful towards everyone and an inspiration for many. I guess Nicholas would be surprised, that you almost hit 6 million views by now and he would be proud of this amazing performance and of everyone you truly touched with it. Of course, some will listen just for a little mindless enjoyment, which also is not a bad thing, yet I guess many feel a deep, profound connection to the message and to the melody, that are delivered. Every single one of them count in a big, meaningful manner. Count me in. Thank you Ben for carrying on the legacy of Nicholas and for doing it so gracefully. And of course, also thank you for cultivating your own music. Individual performers and Songwriters with such authentic roots and such a level of skill are a rarity nowadays. You truly are gems. Gems to behold.

I forgot to thank your girlfriend, maybe wife (I am not sure) for having your back. On the fiddle, when you are playing and also beyond that. She is obviously a great support for you, just like you seem to be for her. And thanks to the people behind "Gems on VHS" for giving a decent platform for such amazing creativity in action. Keep it up!

And still one year later I comment. Nothing compares to this timeless folk. You want to sing and play along somehow with whatever is layin around that makes noise. I play mini latin bongos & marraccas and chickshakes but a washboard or tub bass would be a bit much for this ballad. Love it now as much as then. Thank you very much♡♥
