Keep in mind that 150, 200 years ago, we weren't constantly bombarded with music (TV, movies, radio, ambient musack, and so on) the way we are today. It was not possible, as there was no recording/storage/playback technology available. You could go weeks, months or even years without hearing any type of music! Three hundred years ago, someone may have only had the opportunity to hear Beethoven's 5th ONCE in their entire lives. Yet, I can sit here and replay it over and over, whenever I want, wherever I am.
The past still had lots of music. They and/or their families just sang or played it themselves. They also had community or village festivals and shows. It doesn't need to be fancy or rich.
I think there's a reason there are so many working songs (by field workers, sailors, etc). We love being surrounded by music. And people could do that by themselves even before Johnny Inventor figured out how to record it.
People would hear music in church every weekend in most of western history. Singing and storytelling have been core aspects of human community as far back as we've had language, think folk tunes and working songs. If anything, the modern access to music at all times has resulted in a less musically-inclined society, as people become exclusively consumers without developing any performance skill of their own. Back then, if you wanted music you'd have to play, tap, whistle, sing, or hum. Nowadays you could go weeks, months, or even years without *making* any type of music.
Music is one of those weird things that you can have a craving for, but also overdo. I like to mix up my routine without music. Leave my headphones at home for my morning walk. Or turn off the radio during the commute. Mute the BS workplace pop music for a bit. If you're lucky, you'll catch that strange noise your car has been making. If you're unlucky, you'll learn how many people haven't figured out how to close their lips when chewing, cover their mouths when coughing, or breathe through their nose.
Too much of a good thing. 150, 200 years ago, someone may have gone their entire life without hearing of the classical greats (and hearing very little music in general). Now we can replay them over and over, whenever we desire, from wherever we are.
@@jovalleau it’s not that they never heard music back than. Parents taught their kids songs and made up stuff. They just weren’t as addicted to constantly blocking out their own thoughts…
I'm depressed and have difficulty holding focus. Music has enabled me to do so many things I otherwise couldn't do. I am constantly playing and making music in my head and without it things would be so much harder.
Love your stuff. I’m an old guy (graduated high school in 1974) and i find your work entertaining and informative. It feeds my brain with a stream of tangential information to help keep it from wandering as well as acting on my emotions. I'm a composer, and I don't normally listen to music all the time. It does help me when I'm doing chores and exercise, but in other cases, I prefer silence
part-time musician, any music causes me to listen and mostly concentrate on the elements of the song away from what I should be thinking about. most of the time I choose silence and only listen to music if it's already playing where I'm at
I binged a few of your videos. Great content and videography skills. 25k is a crazy achievement, but I see you hitting well over a 100k. Keep going man 🤝🏻
Music has been the best part of my life as a coping mechanism…..my parents had a good stereo they listened to many albums, country, classical, musicals blues, etc. Despite growing up in a trailer park music and books were my escape. One of the best jobs I ever had was working at a record store. Thankfully these days I can down load my music from my collection onto my headphones and I can listen to whatever music 24-7, at work at home, out for a walk whatever…as I tell my other music has charms to soothe the savage laurie 🙃 btw my plants like it too….
I'm one of those weird people who just can't focus on what I'm doing if there's music. If I'm listening to music, it's in my room with the lights off and the over-the-ear headphones on.
Music was created as a tool for storytelling before we even figured out how to write. Many cultures still have dedicated traditional genres to the spread of stories and information because the format is catchy and easy to remember.
I find I have a hard time working to other people's music -- it's too distracting, grabbing too much of my attention. Though for more physical tasks I do often sing to myself as I work. My own self singing doesn't grab my own attention, and I can change tempo or even stop when I need to focus more.
Definitely!! I almost constantly have music running through my mind: jingles, songs, melodies, and parodies. I have "Musical Ear Syndrome" where a lot of times, I "hear" music when none is being played. I long ago learned that's just the predictive element of music and my brain. The AC is making a subtle, strange noise? My mind focuses in on the frequencies and pulls up a song with a similar note. I used to listen to music a lot when I was young, but now I find it much too distracting and jarring when my own mind is making music on its own lol
I’ve brought a waterproof boombox into the shower for years, because disco showers are awesome In basic training you never hear music and you end up actually craving it after a while
With whatever purpose you listen to music, that purpose will be increased. For instance: there will be a concert given for the poor and unfortunate, and if you go there thinking of the aim, the music will increase your compassion and generosity. This is the reason why music is used in war. And so it is with all the things that cause the excitation of the nerves. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (Bahá'í Writings)
People still wanted to listen to music anywhere and everywhere. There's even an old mansion in Britain (I believe it's there) where there are sound holes going from a music room to multiple rooms so music music could be heard as a background enjoyment.
I rarely listen music. I usually listen audiobooks. I value music quite a lot, but almost never by itself alone. I use stories much more than music for my emotion, pattern completion and dopamine adicction needs.
I enjoy listening to music, but i equally enjoy silence. I can listen to nothing for hours, it calms me down, even when i am not doing anything. Am i not human? Or just over 40?
This is so wild to me because I almost never listen to music while doing things like showering or cleaning. If I’m listening to music while doing those things it usually means I’m in a bad place. I rarely listen to music unless I’m driving.
Plus people singing the same known song brings them together...there may be a survival strategy, such as gettkng everybody in the group on the same emotional level, maybe weeding out the undesirable for whatever reason that the song is bringing you together for....war, hunting party, religion, pub crawls, nationally known songs that bring the locals to tears. Some children with learning disabilities have rythme problems. They can be educated in most cases. Actually a good point. As I former Catholic and current pagan music is a binder of people and a way induce patterns. The feeling of being uplifted or enlightened or in awe by a chant or whatever is a pretty rather universal thing. It can help through collective trauma or stroke people to action good or ill. My favorite personality are old work songs. That sense of drive is palatable and makes the mundane an adventure.
I can't relate. The only times I ever listen to music while doing something is sometimes during long drives in the car, and maybe a couple of times a year while working (which is more accidental than intentional). I don't feel the need at all. I did grow up with music everywhere, but it's faded away over time. When I listen to music, it's 100% for the music itself. I don't do anything else while listening.
I have found what you say is true and I enjoy you have but as I've gotten older, when my significant other leaves for work I turn TV off, and I and enjoy the silence, not total silence but I listen to the birds and the noise of my neighborhood. No music or TV till he comes home and I enjoy it a lot
I could understand listening to music while running, but when it comes to walking especially in nature, I find it's best to leave the earbuds in my pocket and just immerse in the natural ambience.
Great video and presentation. As a life long percussionist, I've been around or had music going most of my life. But it goes beyond playing instruments or just liking tunes. So much of what we do everyday can and is rhythmic. I'll be walking and find myself stepping to the beat, either in headphones or just in my head. I'll have beats or songs pop out of nowhere from a phrase, a sound, or any number of suggestive sources. While a lot of comfort comes from those old songs you've listened to for a long time, ie the expectations, the comfort, etc, I think there's also a base component that rhythm and flow are a time immemorial part of life. Music is an audible embodiment of it. Keep up the good work.
I don't need to listen to music when I do anything really, and it annoys me to no end when other people play music all the time. Most people just don't like peace and quiet I guess. A couple of times at work, the incessant noise actually stopped for awhile, and I felt such a weight lifted from my morale that even I was surprised. A feeling similar to walking outside on the first nice day of spring after a particularly harsh winter.
Speaking figuratively here, the heart is the seat of emotion, and the brain is the seat of calculation. While they can and do work back and forth, things usually work out better when the brain is in control. One way to reduce the brain's influence on behavior is to use music. That's why most video is accompanied by music, to remove a person's thinking capacity and increase the influence of emotion. The emotion will then drive the behavior. Please see, first, Jeremiah 17:9. It describes the default condition of the heart. The brain, or mind, should be used to protect the heart. Please see Proverbs 4: 7-23, especially Verse 23. People should be mindful of allowing music to influence them. There are all kinds of instances where music is used to lead people to perdition.
If I look back at my life as a whole, the times I have been overall the happiest also generally correlate with the times I have been the most into music, and vice versa. I never really made a connection before this, but now that I look at it there definitely seems to be some kind of link.
This is why Spotify is awesome. We find songs from movies and all kinds of sources. And music files for cooking relaxing picnics Christmas etc. but I’m old /retired. But I have radios everywhere. Garage porch (enclosed) dining room bathroom and tv sound bar. Spotify is so cool because it tracked how many artists genre most played song and top 100. But I also keep track of time. Most songs are 3 minutes. Especially the radio. It’s like a timer. But also news and weather.
You're dead on right. I say all the time, "No music, no work." Even beyond that, I don't care if the wheels are falling off my ride, it HAS to have tunes. My unfailing go-to for mundane tasks to relaxation to even social events? MUSIC. It takes me to good and helps me through bad. It reminds me but can distract me. I've said a million times, if it weren't for music, I wouldn't be living.
I actually rarely listen to any music. I do like some songs, but I don't want to hear them. I know I'm not in the majority. I have very keen hearing. I hear both above and below what most humans can hear, so I thought that might have something to do with it.
Bruh this is the funniest thing bc I was just thinking abt this literally a few hours ago bc I kid you not, I was listening to songs on Spotify from the Irish brigade, Elvis Presley, bo Burnham, and kind of military song things from like the us army chorus or smth, while I was practicing piano. And the worst part, is that I was practicing fantasia nr.3 by Mozart, so it's not even like I was playing music similar to the other music I was listening to. And I'm not going to lie, it was a really good practice "session" (for lack of a better word). I fixed up a lot of mistakes I kept on making lol. I was also like vibing to the other music I was listening to so it's not like I was tuning out the Spotify music, like bruh I can't tune out anything for the life of me. Music is like the law that overrules all the other laws to the point where efficient multitasking is possible
I love music but I can’t stand listening to music while I’m working. I can’t concentrate on my job if I’m listening to music. And while I’m driving I play podcasts or turn on a long UA-cam vid and listen to it.
Actually, radios were invented sometime in the 1800s. And have had FM stations since about the 60s, as well as music playing on stations before that. TV was also invented in the 40s, and MTV also existed before this videographer was born. So uh yeah there is literally zero minutes when a non-homeless human being had "nothing" during your lifetime.
@3:58 one of the biggest reasons I got a DAP aka an Mp3 player. Phones are lame. Also becoming an audiophile now prevents me from playing music everywhere I go bc hardware. Now I end up playing UA-cam videos everywhere. Perhaps I can solve the issue by becoming a cinephile 🤔
Addiction? I don't listen to music literally ever. Edit: unless it's part of the content I'm watching or playing. 1:21 oh that might explain it. I'm older than the internet and we had Walkman in high school but I never had one. Edit 2:oh it has to do with emotion. I'm heavier on the thinker side of the spectrum than the feeler side. Music is detracting when I'm otherwise daydreaming or trying to figure something out.
I am going to blow your mind. I don't like music. I find it annoying and distracting. Yes, all types of music. For me being in a room with music playing is the same if I was standing in a room with a bunch of screaming kids. I love video games. I can't play them if music is playing. First thing I do with all video games is turn off the music in the settings. I have never been to a concert. That would be torture.
Bruh you sus af with how accurate these videos are, it’s literally scary. You work for the cia or something? You a lizard man? I don’t get it, but I’ll keep watching lol.
sorry young dude, music is of course one of the nice things in life, but it certainly isnt needed. Ask anyone over 40 to 50, just like the cellphone and social media its NOT needed. Now I will say its much more important than social media and the cellphone but this listening to music all the time, the social media and cellphone nonsense, this is just an entire generation missing the moment. Its sad to see so many young people simply not living and taking notice of what should be the best times of their lives.
6:04 funny story I heard that also illustrates the point you're making here: apparently once astronauts come back down to earth it's a common problem for them to have to break the habit of dropping things in midair and expecting them to float. Dont remember exactly who, but I heard someone got off the shuttle and their first action back on solid ground was to sign an autograph and then basically yeet the pen away on accident 😂
I used to listen to music all the time but now I don't listen to music anymore, unless it is in a movie, game, etc. In the car, no radio on. Strange since I grew up playing music and listening all the time. I like the quiet, especially when driving, to be left to my thoughts.
Same though for me it was more of a conscious decision, at some point I was quite interested in tracking how I spent my time and found amount of time I spent on discovering and judging music high for how little I seemed to get out of it. Also I happened to read somewhere that music tends to make you perform worse at whatever task you're doing like any multitasking tends to do.
I have this thing I call Music Therapy. I have a playlist of all these ballads and anthems that you can sing along with and feel the emotions of the songs. And that’s what I do. I sing along and as I belt it out I’m expressing emotions through it. Sometimes I’m surprised by what’s songs get to me the most. I always feel better after, like I’ve released a lot of stuff I’ve been holding onto unintentionally.
Hmm, what about improvisational (jazz, etc.) and/or deliberate disharmony? Not everyone likes them, but plenty do. And then there all the jokes about everyone knowing Bohemian Rhapsody, which shouldn't work as one song, but does! Now, this is not to say I didn't find your video interesting, entertaining, and informative, it just gave me lots of "thinky thoughts" and questions for more!
1 laecre is legit and under rated for pure rapping talent 2 I just found your channel and am binge watching with headphones whole making and eating breakfast
I have UA-cam on basically 24/7. Making food, cleaning, going out to play Pokémon Go, showering, sleeping… the list goes on. It’s not usually music for me though, but it’s something I can usually follow without seeing the screen consistently. I’ll even take it with me to get a glass of water.
Music is something I can't go a day without...it has always been very strange when I go to someones home, & there is no stereo, cd's, albums, streaming, etc. Music is a very important part of my life. Love your ideas in this video.
Great video, but you forgot one thing. Music is predictability + surprise. A metronome is predictable. What causes pleasure is the right combination of what you expect and what you don't expect.
Interesting... When I am in the kitchen, either cooking a familiar dish or a new one, I need soft, instrumental music playing - its quite relaxing ESPECIALLY when trying to figure out or follow a new recipe. For the most part, though, I have a random show playing on the TV when doing house chores, I just need background noise. Your videos are great, by the way, loved the little dancing kid in this one! Onto another one....

People sang, hummed, tapped out tunes, no fanfare or orchestra needed for “music”. I hum to myself a lot, and sing.

Unless I am actively listening I prefer silence.
Bro if I die tonight was my middle school jam!!
I can whistle fur elise
this is fucking dope
Actually, radios were invented sometime in the 1800s. And have had FM stations since about the 60s, as well as music playing on stations before that. TV was also invented in the 40s, and MTV also existed before this videographer was born. So uh yeah there is literally zero minutes when a non-homeless human being had "nothing" during your lifetime.
I’m still trying to figure out why I’m so addicted to Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo music. It’s like he wrote it for ADHD crack babies.
but i do .. a heck of a lot, without music
@3:58 one of the biggest reasons I got a DAP aka an Mp3 player. Phones are lame. Also becoming an audiophile now prevents me from playing music everywhere I go bc hardware. Now I end up playing UA-cam videos everywhere. Perhaps I can solve the issue by becoming a cinephile 🤔
we don't need music !
OR WHAT IF I JUST LIKE MUSIC?
Sooo, can i keep listening medieval music while reading complicated thing?
You better believe we need music to survive.
Another question: why do 99% of people love music and couldn't live without it yet I hate it and would get rid of it for 5 bucks
Pizza planet t-shirt... Hmmmmm 🤔
Why don't you just post your sources in the description? Why do we have to contact you?
sorry young dude, music is of course one of the nice things in life, but it certainly isnt needed.
Don't you mean, "Why I can't do anything while listening to music." ?
the piano is overrated
Solid video young man keep it up 👍🏾
U Legend. Appreciate it!
@0:29
Thank you for introducing me to that Vampire Kermit gif. Did not know that happened. That on repeat, just makes me laugh.
Yo I just found your video, liked it, subscribed 🤝
Thanks! Welcome!
Lolol dopamine sucking vampires! That was funny. Why survival was maximized when we needed a fix to do ANYTHING is astounding...
Can you do a 440 hz vs 432 hz tuning of instruments?
Music as a pattern recognition reward. Amazing. That is a thought I've never had before. Thank you.
I used to listen to music all the time but now I don't listen to music anymore, unless it is in a movie, game, etc. In the car, no radio on. Strange since I grew up playing music and listening all the time. I like the quiet, especially when driving, to be left to my thoughts.
I get songs stuck in my head, which drives me crazy. This might be the reason I don't listen to music, so I doesn't get stuck in there.
If our minds like predictability, why is comedy both unpredictable and satisfying
3:15 that's why jingles get stuck in our head , purchase products because of music #nontoxicliving
1 laecre is legit and under rated for pure rapping talent
2 I just found your channel and am binge watching with headphones whole making and eating breakfast
Music is my life🎶🎤🎧 I have Bluetooth headphones so I can move about the house and have my tunes without bothering my roommate.
After playing Metal: Hellsinger....
Yes, yes we do need music to survive xD
Our cells dance when they hear music. Even babies gotta move to the beat🎉⚡😘🙃
