my group of six played 19 games over the course of last summer. very easy to modify the game proxies for six players + every role is played each game. loved this gaming experience so much! best of luck!

Thanks for this, Jamey! I bought this months ago and have been waiting to get 5 people together safely. I think Shut Up and Sit Down sold me on the game, but if they hadn't, you just did. I appreciate all the thought you put into games, and I always enjoy hearing your take.

Thanks! We're all vaccinated, and we wear masks when we play, so we've been fortunate to be in what we consider to be a safe scenario.

Fascinating discussion, Jamey! I find that in many historical games (my preferred genre) designer's have a great time coming up with endless rules to simulate things, without a consideration of whether or not it is fun to play. This creates very dense games that are not enjoyable.
I find the true elegant game is one that simulate a its subject with a minimum rules that capture the right "feel."

Doh! hit reply too soon! I meant to finish by saying that King's Gambit is an excellent example of an elegant game.

Thanks for the video Jamey, indeed a great & fascinating game! Normally I do not like bidding games, but this game made it work for me. I think the 'turn based' bidding, the team feeling, the official bribing system & the strategic feel of the leader tokens all contributed to this. It of course also helps that the theme is amazing & the results of the bidding are a bit opaque ;).
I also love the escalating feel of the tug of war aspact, due to the gain of momentum of the tokens.
The parts I think could improved are the negative stickers (they feel a bit too negative for our group, consequently a vote with a negative sticker never comes through) & some of the aesthetics (the box cover has to be one of the best in the board game world, but the board/coins/power tokens disappointed me a bit).

I was glad to read that you were playing the King's Dilemma in your Stonemaier's monthly newsletter, I love the way you analyze board games and I was very much looking forward to this video.
I played most of the campaign before the pandemic and we were just having a blast, so far we've been through only half of the envelopes and our deck is somewhere around 40-60 cards thick, so I'm guessing it may be worth it to get another copy to play with a different group, it's an experience I definitely want to share with more people.
Let us know your thoughts after you finish your campaign.

Thanks! I'm incredibly curious how the story involves in other versions of the game, as we've gone deep down certain paths that I'm guessing others simply didn't go down (and vice versa).

We just started a 4 player game last week and I'm excited to get more in. The moderator wasnt very impactuful because votes were typically 2v1 with one(4th) person not caring. Do you think it would benefit if we could bring in a 5th?

That's part of the cleverness of the game--to me it doesn't seem like the number of people matter all that much, because what matters is the amount of power you put on the vote cards. But if it isn't working for you, feel free to bring in a 5th. :)

I think the game GREATLY improves from 4 to 5.

The game definitely improves from 4 to 5, but even when we have 4 players, moderator was a highly coveted privilege in my games. the bargaining power you get was just too good to pass up for us. Im sure every group is different though. We loved to blackmail and barter. If one player seemed to have an interest in an outcome, the others would make sure they paid a heavy price for it.
