  • How I fixed my 2003 Impala where I had no sound out of the speakers and also no warning chimes. How to fix the orange wire power feed behind the passenger seat caused by unseen water getting in under the carpet. Also as you can see you don't have to cut as big a carpet patch as i did. The harness is right in the fold just under the plastic interior trim. Cut parallel in that area and the harness will pull out.

    I have a commercial shop in NJ. Customer came in with this problem, and I checked all the available info to diagnose it. There IS NO official information about this problem. SO I googled it and found this video. I can't possibly cut the carpet out, but as Glenn Goldbeck mentioned, pulling the molding away from the frame (no screws on a '04) was easy enough. I recommend pulling the back seat out, too. Just grab it and yank up, it'll pop right out. You have to wonder why GM wouldn't issue a recall. But then, they didn't issue a recall for the instrument clusters failing on so many '99-'06 vehicles either.
    Thanks for this video. You saved me a lot of time, and my customer a lot of money. If you find yourself in Newark (and I hope you never do) stop by Paddy's Service Station. I owe you a drink.

    Good tip and thanks for sharing, this did the trick to fix the radio in my '04. 🙂 Took about 15 minutes to fix and the radio works again. Mine also had moisture under there, ridiculous GM design. The others here are right; you don't need to cut up your carpet. I just pull the plastic covers off, prop the carpet up, and then pull the wire harness out from under the carpet. I used a piece of speaker wire I had laying around to bridge the gap between the wires. I could have soldered them, but I just taped the wires together with some electrical tape, no some super critical spot where I'm worried about them coming apart. Fixed a lot of stupid things on this car with UA-cam including the ABS wire and the multifunction switch. No need to get scraped by mechanics or the GM garages for things that should have been designed better on these cars in the first place.

    No need to destroy your carpet by cutting a hole in it, everything simply pops out and back in. I made this repair in under 30 minutes and I didn't cut the carpet.

    Thanks for the video. My kid drives a 2005 Impala to school, and the stereo went out two weeks ago. I pulled the harness that was behind the passenger seat apart, and the orange wire splice fell apart in my hands secondary to trapped moisture. I rebuilt the connection using wire connnectors, dielectric grease and shrink tubing and the stereo fired right up.
    I did not need to cut any carpet, just moved panels and the harness by hand. It all went back together nice.
    Thanks!

    Not all cars have that one to two wire splice. I took apart my sons car from the rear seat all the way to the from just underneath the dash and all orange wires are separate. I even had to remove the front seat to get to all the wires. This car also had no water leaks at all, it was completely dry. Still trying to figure out where the problem is on my sons car. Next step I might have to dismantle the dash.

      glad it helped. that's why i did the video for this car specific. I later found out the water issue maybe coming from the front around the heater fan housing. and running to the back under the carpet. this unfortunately isn't an easy fix.

      There is an easy fix. p/n 15794785, deflector. It's like a $5.00 part. There is TSB about the water issue through the blower. It took me 4 hours to do the repair, though,
      1. deflector
      2.. Foam weatherstrip (Home Depot)
      3.. 1 EDPM weatherstrip (Home Depot)
      4. 3m 90 adhesive - Had it, Could use contact cement.
      5. Loctite blue (for wiper screw)
      6. Wiper arm removal tool (didn;t have)
      7. cabin air filter
      Park wipers midway by turning off the engine. Place masking tape under top edge and mark wiper position for re-install.
      Undo the washer connections (3)
      Remove wiper arms.
      Remove passenger cowl first. One large plastic headed screw, two plastic rivets (pull up center).
      Remove other rivet.
      Remove entire cowl - 2 pieces.
      vaccum out area.
      Remove short piece of rubber and discard (this moved letting water in.)
      remove and install cabin air filter.
      Install deflector.
      Fix the weatherstippping on the cowl pieces, This is where I used 3m 90 spray adhesive. The self adhesive didn't work.
      One piece on the passenger side, i could not remove, but this needed foam weatherstrip.
      Install passenger side cowl.
      The passenger cowl rib has to be trimmed underneath,
      Install wipers with alignment marks.
      Re-connect washer hoses.
      wiper screws need blue locktite. After tightening, let dry for recommended time.
      PS: I could not find the "orange splice" in a 2000 Impala, but have the intermittant amp issue.

    Had the same problem with my 05 Impala the water problem comes from the cabin air filter generally, just a FYI. you will see that many posts comment it is only the passenger side that fills with water. In my case even when the carpet appeared dry on top I found I would have up to a inch or more of water standing beneath!!!!! I replaced the cabin air filter first, glued on the rubber seal that rides above it, not taking any chances of it falling off ever again. I drilled two tiny holes in my floor boards to let the water out so that I did not have to remove my carpeting. It worked well, I will fill the tiny holes with a sealant when it is completely dry. My wiring harness ran along the edge of the door frame I only had t o loosen some door trim and did make a small slit near the corner of the back of the seat,corner which is not even visible when it was all reassembled, this gave me access to get to the wiring without taking out the seat and removing or cutting the carpeting as shown in this video. What thru me for a loop is that every one who discusses this mentions a "connector" there is no connector just what looks like duct tape with plaster of paris or a chalky material in the wrap. That is what got wet and shorted out the speaker system. I just added a link of wire. ( There is one orange wire that connects to 3 orange wires. And boom I had sound thru my stereo, and all door chimes again. I am a 54 year old woman and I did this with minimal tools. Just a pair of wire strippers, scissors, electrical tape and a heat shrink connector, and heat blower. I think even a lighter or shrink tubing would work just fine.I got laughed at when I went to my local Advance Auto and told them this was my theory that I had discovered thru research. But the laugh was on them. It worked and cost me no more then the 15.00 cabin filter and a little of my time. About 30 minutes in all.

    • @Yophillips3272
      @Yophillips3272 6 років тому +1

      I fixed it I just bypassed the amp in the trunk it actually sounds better without it, you can buy a plug online or just use some old wire you have laying around. If you don't have those orange wires he's talking about this is the way to go. 2001 impala LS btw don't cut your carpet or take things apart check power at the amp in the trunk 1st. With a test light or multimeter.

    Wow man, why did you cut the carpet??? There is no screws.. just pop up the sill plate, pull the carpet back. WOW!

    • @transitman181
      @transitman181  10 років тому

      I looked at this possibility. but the screw heads were so badly corroded the screw driver was just eating the top of the screws. I would have had to drill them out. also the plastic is under laid to the plastic of the center post and wheel well interior cowl with means gutting the interior. i cut carpet. easier. YES you don't need to make as big of cut as i did obviously. a strait incision along the corner edge would be enough. so use my mistake as a learning experience as to where the harness is. when i did it i thought the harness was further in under floor pan.

    • @TheAmpLab
      @TheAmpLab 10 років тому +1

      No no, you dont need to cut anything, and there are no screws. not sure what screws youre referring to but all you do it pop up the seat (Just lift up hard it will pop out, and then pop up the trim near the door opening, You can just peel the carpet back without doing anything else. Ive done probably 20 of these things.
