  • A behind the scenes look at the groundbreaking virtual production technology used on The Mandalorian, season two.
    For the second season of Lucasfilm’s hit Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, Industrial Light & Magic reengineered their StageCraft virtual production platform rolling out version 2.0 in which ILM introduced among other things, Helios, Industrial Light & Magic’s first cinematic render engine designed for real-time visual effects. Engineered from the ground up with film and television production in mind, Helios offers incredible performance, high fidelity real-time ray tracing, the ability to rip through scenes of unparalleled complexity, all while leveraging ILM’s unrivaled color science, and was designed from the start to work seamlessly with ILM StageCraft.
    The purpose-built, production-hardened platform allows filmmakers to explore new ideas, communicate concepts, and execute shots in a collaborative and flexible production environment.

      Yeah, I remember my first enthusiastic dabbles in 3D back in the early 90s in Alias PA on an SGI Indigo 2 Extreme, dreaming away "imagine when the computers will be so fast that they can render this stuff in in real time, how cool that will be!".
      30 years later and it is now reality! BUT, I could never have imagined that the majority of what has since then been considered Post production would one day be considered Pre(!) production!

      Virtual production and practical effects aren't mutually exclusive. But back in the day, to do this kind of thing, they'd have to chroma-key the actors into that miniature background. Despite it literally being real tangible objects, everyone will still think it's fake because the actors aren't physically there because they can't be. Take the prequels as a good example of that being the case. Now you can do that same thing but have that miniature background project the lighting on the actors making the whole scene look seamless.

    I've been on a couple of productions now that have utilized volume stages. It's a surreal experience - even as a crew member you feel like you're actually in whatever environment you're shooting in that day. Plus, there's a VFX team that does adjustments in real time. The future is wild! Imo, this is the biggest leap in technology film has made in a number of years. I'm not really phased by anything we do behind the scenes anymore, but these stages are incredible and seriously impressed me. Despite some learning curbs when shooting on them, I can't wait for more studios to build them...after we're all employed again, of course.

    I understand the process, but it still absolutely blows my mind it's become this. And using stop-motion in the background... fantastic. I have no idea what it costs but you definitely see every penny on screen. Sadly due to cast changes I will now have to sail the high seas to find content... :(

      Hell yeah. I love that ILM is still so connected to their VFX roots that when they need quality stop motion they go pull that old codger out of his special effects hobbit hole and put him to work.

    John Favreau really should win some award for this cause this is revolutionary for film.. i can't even tell wants real and what isn't... i think the next step is texture mapping on physical objects.. like a cube can be anything.. so u don't even have to build the set, just use prefab shapes

    This is a very retro futurism. It harkens back to the old theatre days, where they'd drop a sheet behind the stage with a painting of a location and a few props in front for the actors to interact with and to blur the boundary between real and imagined. This is basically exactly the same thing, but with screens that react to the perspective of the camera instead of sheets. Funny how going backwards can be a huge leap forwards at the same time.

    Is it possible to have a fast enough refresh rate on the screens that you could shoot at a super high fps, and have the screens flip between the virtual environment and a full green screen every Nth frame? So that you can have both in post by just selecting that Nth frame for the key, but using a native like 24fps for the non green screen frames?

  • @rorypuds

    I do think this tech is amazing, and it must be so beneficial to the production.... but surely the mandalorian is perfectly suited to this type of set design, and its really is limited to these open spaces, with little set interaction? I just can't see it moving into other types of productions, where set design is more intrinsic to the story. For like 20% of general shots though, it could be a game changer.

    • @kyebean
      @kyebean Рік тому

      You can still have a set in the Volume, I guess you just couldn't do one continuous shot of someone moving across a huge location

  • @joec3890
    @joec3890 2 роки тому

    Also nice is the idea that for franchises, as you build up digital assets for production, they can be used again in the next movie/season/sequel/spinoff/flashback. Most of what's left after you've replaced the setting in a scene is just set dressings, props, decorative stuff, etc... and most of that could probably be stored in shipping containers, all perfectly paired with their super hi res digital backgrounds.
    Now you can grab set stuff along with their digital environment and call up and recreate almost any scene. Not bad for a lot of movies, but perfect for big franchises... probably why Disney was early to jump on this stuff.
