Why 'The Mandalorian' Uses Virtual Sets Over Green Screen | Movies Insider

  • For decades, film and TV productions have used green and blue screens to place actors into new environments. Now, LED walls are revolutionizing this process by projecting 3D environments in real time behind actors to provide the illusion of being in a physical location. These methods were put to the test on Disney’s "The Mandalorian," of which over half was filmed indoors on a virtual set. This process of combining traditional cinematography techniques with advanced world-building technology effectively eliminates the need for a green screen.

      @@Fin_The_Shark thats a crazy idea, I mean the possibilities are so vast that it is hard to imagine. its like when cinema began it was just like filming a theatre play. in the beginning no one even imagined the idea of a montage. all the camera tricks, narrative devices that we take for granted now were mind boggling to someone who grew up before cinema. So its really interesting whats gonna come of it, and chances are it is not going to be cinema but in 3d, itll be something else entirely.

      @@jmckendry84 It's expensive, but far less so than if they had tried to just brute force it with traditional CGI and green screen technology. It still uses CGI, technically, but not how really anyone else in the industry uses it. When characters are on set and visible, as much of the set is really there that was reasonable, and the parts they aren't interacting with might as well be there, since the actors can now see it in real time with the real lighting they'd experience.

      Nah @Blacklight Oblivion used front projection (and some rear), no parallax. And even that was essentially (as is this) repeating the one they didn't mention - Kubrick's Dawn of Man on 2001 which came out in 1968. The difference as they did say is parallax/movement.

    • @oOTheCassiel
      @oOTheCassiel 3 роки тому +6

      yeah but this makes it even easier for postproduction - let me explain. if you take the screens from interstellar and move your head or the camera in the cockpit the picture wont move - say you have 2 ppl there, both se the same stuff even if it would normally be impossible to see from their point of view.
      with this setup you have the screens at a distance around the cockpit and every actor and camera can film at the same time and have the right view on the screens.
      so in the first you have to change the videos/pictures on the screen with every camera switch - and you need to while with the second you could just have all the cams roll at the same time without the need for changing videos.
      but yeah the first is still way better than starring at a wall :P
