I hear you about the "melody" , whether comping , bass, etc. I come from reading Real Book charts, and always having them to refer to.... Not rambling at all, actually more focused and concise than the other of your instructional videos I've seen. Not only that, but your pacing much improved when you finally got into the meat of the matter. Much appreciated.
The way music is laid out on a page use to throw me off because the bars had different sizes. Also, songs of 2 or more pages were difficult to memorize. So what I did was take blank paper and put 4 bars to a line, using the first and second ending and Coda symbols, and just wrote the chords, placing them rhythmically within each measure. It became easier to see the structure, the patterns of the song, and it became easier to memorize. The most challenging one was Aja. You also mention playing in time. I use a program that slows the song (also changes the pitch) and it helps me analyze solos. It also let's me hear how Les Paul heard music when he invented the 2 speed multi-track.

You are so right that if you depend on a chart you generally will never get off the page and memorize the song! I joke with guys, and girls, about this all the time-something they've played 500 times in their life and they have to look at the chart! 😀🎶👍🏽
