@JunkyardDigs I watch a channel by the name of Robot Cantina. (here on YT, look it up seriously.) Anyway, on that show he builds cars with predator 212 engines in. My question for you is: can you make a road legal car using that engine for under $500?
I think this "Loose Ends" series needs a name, and, a little note at the start of every episode to encourage everyone at home who's been letting a project sit for too long, to get off of the couch and make progress tying up one loose end themselves. A little self-help series.
Kevin, I rebuilt a lot of engines in my career, including 2.3 litre Fords , 6.5 litre Chevrolet turbo diesels , FE series Fords and 2 stroke Detroit Diesels. My assembly lube was black moly grease. It doesn't harden, dissipates quickly in motor oil on start-up -( unless you simply went Bozo the clown with it.), and is not expensive. On piston rings I used oil, of course, but for almost everything else, including the cam bearings, lobes and bottom of lifters, black moly got the job done. Yes, lifters were soaked in engine oil, only the bottoms got the grease, but it's a good extreme pressure lube and I never experienced any cam failures when proper run-in was followed. It did not clog any oil filters, like a lot of "expert" mechanics swore it would. Take it from a guy who was there, it is probably better assembly lube than they sell at the parts house.
Once upon a time, Fridays were for house parties or trips to the bar. Now I’m older, don’t really like being around people, and sit in my favorite chair and watch hours of people working on their projects. Usually a few beers involved. Interesting how life’s priorities change 😂
For me, it was playing in bands at bars on Friday/Saturday nights! And load in/Load out all the heavy PA gear! Now, a JYD and PBG video is as good as it gets!
I had to chuckle when you mentioned the front of the truck lifting with the engine. Most of us who've spent time in a garage knows the front suspension is going to unload quite a bit when the weight of the engine is lifted off. Of course, we also know the primary unintended use of a cherry picker is to test the tensile strength of any wire, cable, hose, line, or linkage you neglected to discinnect prior to attempting to lift the engine. Nice tutorial gents.

I know you think ONLY guys watch but guess what! I've learned so much from you and your friends (Dalton) and am so happy to see Angus back on all the time. Great choice. Wonderful addition to the channel.
Hey Kevin here's an Awesome tip -- my Grandpa showed me many many years ago -- get 2 bolts 3 or 4 inches long and cut the heads off and hand thread them into block on each side then it's Super easy to line everything up and when you get it seated and put a bolt in each side you can unscrew the alignment bolts by hand. I would also round off the end of bolt and cut a slot in them for a screwdriver -- works Great and keep those bolts in your toolbox Forever-- Really makes life Easier😊😊
I put the bolts through on the frame and the engine mounts that way you can line it up and eyeball it into place and get the bolts in 1 by 1 and after you have them all in you can tighten them all in at the same time and make any adjustments on the fly with the connections and exhaust and sensors. it works really well!
Realistically when pulling engines with friends, one should be on top yanking those parts, and the other should be doing all the underneath stuff (with music and cold snacks of course) but always hilarious watching your stuff! But you should also consider investing in a cyclopse work light if you dont have some already, theyre the bees knees, compact three brightness settings, and magnetize to almost everything with rust crusties!
The whole bread to get the pilot bushing out was with some classic Angus humor at around 43:00. I always enjoyed him on the other episodes because he makes the kinda jokes I always do when working on stuff like this. So glad he is full time now.

40:53 Been there, done that. Critical tip: do not force the trans to the engine. I had a 1972 VW Type 3 with the pancake motor and the automatic transmission by borg warner. I had no idea how a torque converter worked, I didn't even know what one was when I took the motor out so the torque converter fell out onto the ground. I was 16. I put it back up into place, and then I proceeded to earn enough money at $3.35 an hour to finally rebuild the motor. Every single part had to be replaced all that was saved was the case after line boring and case savers and the crank after having it turned. When I finally saved up enough money to buy all the parts. (Months later) to put the motor back together to get it to run and bolted it up to the transmission I crushed all the interior gears because the torque converter was not all the way seated in and I used the bolts to force it all together.
At the one engine rebuilding shop i worked at, we just used lucas oil stabilizer as assembly lube. I'm fairly convinced most assembly lubes they sell are nothing more than this stuff with dye added.
The joy of seeing a notification of a new video from junkyard digs. In a time with struggles and depression, watching you guys really brightens the day for me.
Love the video! LS PEOPLE, DO NOT USE BREAD IN THE END OF YOUR CRANKSHAFT! The ls motors have an oil plug in the end of the crank and you will push the plug into the motor along with a loaf of bread. Keep up the awesome work Kevin and Friends!

You could squirt water in to get the bread out. It's a plumbers trick. To keep water from fouling copper pipe solder fittings, you stuff some bread in the pipe and when you are done sweating the fittings, you turn the water on and flush out the soggy bits of bread.

12:08 pro tip before you take the hood off, take a marker and mark the outer edge of the hinge of your hood so that when you put it back on, you can line it up and keep your body lines, correct
Also can draw a circle around the hinge mounting bolts, so all you have to do is center the bolts in the circles, then tighten. On a dark colored vehicle, use a light colored paint pen.

Another tip to get bell houseing bolts out, sometimes in trucks and SUVs there is an access panel in the floor of the cab you can remove to get at them.
One thing I have learned about mating the FE engine to an automatic is leave the engine mounts off the block until after you get the engine hooked up to the transmission fully, then you can lift the engine up just enough to slide the engine mounts in and bolt them to the block and to the vehicle. The studs on the mounts hitting the perches make mating the engine to the trans a nightmare. I've done it three times with three different vehicles. Tried it with the mounts removed on the third one and no problemo.
As thorough as you were with everything else on the project, I was surprised to hear you mention the turn signals were working, but not once did you mention checking the blinker fluid, or adding zinc to the blinker system for the break in period. 😉 Good video, and a nice looking old Ford.

After awhile, I double chained the engine, and hoist-Pulled out the 460. Still have the 460.
I flipped a tractor when pulling a 460 out of a rv frame, the 460s are incredibly heavy So i probably just wouldn't use that size of chain or adapter on a 460 again
I enjoy watching you guys you remind me of my husband and his buddy KK in Ottumwa, IA. One day this will be a lost art. Keep wrenching, we'll keep watching.
I had a ford Tbird that had 170,000 miles on the original engine when I agreed to sell it ( I had bought a new Escort, and the Trans in the tbird was not working great slipping sort of ) turned out after a filter change the trans eventually went back to working perfectly and the engine was good for anther 60,000 before it was totaled in a wreck. I love pre 1985 fords.
Rusty manifold bolts take time. An old army mechanic told me once...if you get then broken free with a breaker bar and go to reach for a rachet, don't, keep working it back and forth until you can take it out with your finger. I haven't broke a manifold bolt since he taught me that trick 30 years ago.
I predict you'll be replacing the trans next. Ask me how I know Talking about cam break in's; Back in the 80s we had spent all day Sunday changing the cam in my 67 Mustang, we got it fired at 22:00 not wanting to make the neighbors upset, we set the idle up and I took a road trip, towards the next town so I wouldn't have to stop. With one eye on the road the other on the gauges, I wasn't paying attention to the speedometer, then the car I had just met threw a uturn, knowing what was about to happen I pulled off and was sitting on the trunk with my paperwork in hand, engine still rumbling through the 2.5 glass packs as the Texas state officer in his Mustang pulled up behind me. He gets out and walks up and asked me what was going on, the only clean thing on me was my hands. So I told him he unshiips his flashlight and starts towards the front asking What have you done to the old girl, I opened the hood and started pointing out the headers< Holly 4 barrel Accel monster coil... When Shut the hood he walked away saying I thought you would like to know you were doing65 in a 55 MPH zone! Thanks for showing me your engine be safe on the way home and watch your speed. He got back in his car uturned and left me. looking at my watch I realized that more than 20 minutes had passed, so II opened the hood turned down the idle and headed home. I met up with him again but that is a whole nother story involving a drag strip

My family's pickup when I was a kid was a '68 F-100 just like that '69 but base model with the 240 I-6, 3-on-the-tree, manual everything, and sky blue and white paint. My wife and I in recent years (2016-2020) owned a '71 with a 390, 3-on-the-tree, and power brakes. We miss it. These are the most reliable trucks ever.

On oil filters i have found that one certain oil filter catches almost everything but they aren't usually known about. Baldwin filters are not paper filters they use a packing type filter and they catch more metal pieces than wix or k&n which is the best on the planet but not compared to Baldwin filters. Napa or federated parts and your big truck parts stores are the only places that carry them. Big trucks use them and it's why some diesel engines get a million miles on them. I have been using them for years and I have not lost a engine yet.
Damn that pilot bushing! The inverse is true too: it's also bad to NOT have one in place when installing a 4 speed....A mistake you only make once.... Funny clip w/ Mook too lol... Great video, brother! A+++++
I was wondering. When you had the intake off, did you notice a casting number in the valley? Years ago I pulled several of these apart because the crankcase ventilation wasn't very good and they would buildup sludge in the top of the motor and prevent the oil from draining back down fast enough. One had lock up. Anyway about the number I noticed that all the ones I tore down said 352 on the left rear side of the valley, which would make since 'cause if you had a pile of blocks hangin' out from years gone by that were never machined, why not make them useful.

I enjoy watching you guys you remind me of my husband and his buddy KK in Ottumwa, IA. One day this will be a lost art. Keep wrenching, we'll keep watching.
Love your videos, always watch them from england, but the racon plug with mook was hilarious, should do some more like that.
thanks for all the awesome explanations that helps alot with those of us that dont do this every day, thanks much kevin and angus
i just rewatched that TX trip episode lol ... "turn right, Angus" .. Angus looks and turns LEFT
So much easier to pull transmission with motor and gives you room to clean everything up
You should be very proud. The puzzle said 3-5 years and you only took 20 minutes!! You're a genius!!
I'm waiting for y'all to finish the burn burrito Nova 🎉
Rusty manifold bolts take time. An old army mechanic told me once...if you get then broken free with a breaker bar and go to reach for a rachet, don't, keep working it back and forth until you can take it out with your finger. I haven't broke a manifold bolt since he taught me that trick 30 years ago.
I get more excited seeing a JunkYard Digs video than I do a Cleetus McFarland video 💪
I am so glad Angus is on the channel now. I love his humor and teamwork with you.
Awesome to see this old stuff again!
OK - the Raycon Ad was amazing. You two are so cute!
I’m so excited to see a new junkyard digs video
I really like the new/ish format of this vid. Team effort. Thanks for the vid
I predict you'll be replacing the trans next. Ask me how I know
Talking about cam break in's; Back in the 80s we had spent all day Sunday changing the cam in my 67 Mustang, we got it fired at 22:00 not wanting to make the neighbors upset, we set the idle up and I took a road trip, towards the next town so I wouldn't have to stop.
That is awesome! 😂
Also.... Good prediction
I love to re watch these old videos in a pure random order. Makes them great.
So basically all you need to do to change an engine is shove things in holes. Got it 👍
Hmm I changed an engine last night then.
Glad to see yall going back and clearing out past projects. So many creators leave them to rot. Love the content seeing them finished to the degree they need and get them on down the road.
"what do you do in your free time." As an employer I dont thing you are allowed to ask me that."I know my rights, I know my lefts too"😂🤣❤
Best ad segment ever Mook and Kev 😆😆🤘⚔️🎬
I love Mook ❤
The raycon demo with mook is hilarious 😂😂😂 I have a pair of these and I'm definitely glad I saw them on the channel and gave them a chance... I've had problems finding buds that fit good and comfortable enough to wear for longer than 5 minutes lol. They fit my goofy ears 😅. Anyway, love the videos. Keep doing what you do.
Sooner upload than usual, I can vibe with that.
I absolutely love these Ford trucks.
There are youtubers that talk too much, and nothing important actually gets said. And then there is Junkyard Digs, so much gets said, and it's so informative, while being entertaining. This is a well oiled machine that I truly hope lasts forever!
YES ANOTHER JUNKYARD DIGS VIDEO HOLY FUCKIN SHIT BOIS
They just keep coming 😂
Mook is great in her own "special" way. Great video as is the norm. I told you MOOK was a keeper am looking forward to her next video.😃
2:33 Dave's Farm? I remember watching a lot of Dave's Farm back in the day.
Yuuup!
@@JunkyardDigs ....yanno it might be funny AF if you lot build a half-car out of one of those grand prix's left lying about from the grand prix grand prix haahahahahaha
Dave has a new channel. It’s called “david brock”.
Adding Angus to the full time crew is a net positive. Looking forward to more of this crew and finishing a bunch of old projects. Also....more paint work please!
Kevun did you ever consider teaching at a tech school for adults, you have a gift at your age were it might take years for a master mechanic would that was older
He needs to learn the difference between a header and an exhaust manifold first.
Great episode Kev&Ang. Learned alot. Kev your voice is so soothing explaining everything. Angus’s diction is coming along too 😂😉😆
There is no way that's 123k, that's got to be 300 or 400k
OMG I AM DYING LAUGHING!!!😂The Raycon segment with Mook is HILARIOUS!!!!!
I need to be brave and swap an engine into 97 Camaro. It can't be that bad can it? It's even a 3800, not even a v8
Label all the wires, double check all your connections, and find a good friend to help you! You can do it
thank you for being thorough and considerate of less adept people like me. I appreciate your content and humor.
Sir im starting to have withdrawals from this channel. Im gonna need my fix soon. 😁
It is a lot more relaxing to watch you guys working on vehicles after I just swapped the passenger CV axle on my roommate's 1999 Honda Civic Si. Get to do the driver's side tomorrow, fun fun, so now to watch you guys keeping an old Ford alive.
“THE HORN WORKS!!”
Mook ad read was great! You should include her in every video because, as you know Calvin, the world needs more MOOK!!
yes 1st
🤘🤘🤘
On oil filters i have found that one certain oil filter catches almost everything but they aren't usually known about. Baldwin filters are not paper filters they use a packing type filter and they catch more metal pieces than wix or k&n which is the best on the planet but not compared to Baldwin filters. Napa or federated parts and your big truck parts stores are the only places that carry them. Big trucks use them and it's why some diesel engines get a million miles on them. I have been using them for years and I have not lost a engine yet.
The EARTH is a RUBIX CUBE....!!!!!
Bro is going insane 💀
kevin makes some of the most interesting videos and great teaching and he's funny. my favorite car\truck youtuber
Dude Mook got a lot taller, and handsomer
You are one of the few mechanic channels I really like.
