A division bell is a parliamentary device that is used to signal that debate on legislation is over and votes must be cast. The metaphor is that as people grow up they begin to make choices, divide and separate. Leaving old friends and places. Making decisions that can't be taken back. Given the history of The Floyd, these lyrics are full of nostalgia. Something that you appreciate as you get older. The guitar Dave Gilmour uses towards the end is a blonde Fender Deluxe lap steel. And that echo of the piano and guitar, good catch. That means a lot.
This was the first show in the Pompeii amphitheater with a live audience since the year 79C.E., so it was 1937 years in between....When Pink Floyd performed in the same amphitheater in 1972 there was no audience....
"The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre. It is located in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, that also buried Pompeii itself and the neighbouring town of Herculaneum." - wikipedia
That magical moment when somebody sees and hears a slide guitar for the first time in their lives, beautiful. This was the first gig at Pompeii playing to a paying audience since the eruption buried it.
I tear to think of the high hopes I had when your age, how fast the time slips away, how we compromise our dreams and goals as we realize that our high hopes were just a pipedream, but most I tear as, for the world we leave you kids as you have to face your new reality with the world we leave to you. That’s so true. I have two teen grandchildren that I am overcome with emotion when they look at me. I’ve done everything I can physically do...I hope they have a future to survive in.
Dave Gilmour is from Cambridge, UK. The magnets and miracles refers to Cambridge University and all the scientific discoveries there. The Long Road and The Causeway are roads in Cambridge. The division bell is a bell that's rung when the UK government has to go and vote. The bell rings and the politicians divide into two groups, those voting yes or no to something. It's all about making choices in life, living with them and looking back. If you love piano then you need to listen to Pink Floyd's The Great Gig In The Sky.

I honestly didn't think someone so young would get the idea behind this song so solidly, but you nailed it. Well done. Oh, and he's playing a custom slide guitar there. David Gilmour, the singer and guitarist, is a master at his craft. Listen to more when you can.
This is from their last studio album the division Bell from 94 where they did the world tour for the division Bell where the concert post was recorded from as well I must say it’s great seeing a new generation enjoying Pink Floyd makes me happy
Claire, your summation of this song is spot on. Walker, your such a delight. Your antics during this video were exceedingly entertaining. You're both very genuine people. I appreciate that. I will say the lyrical content and backstory of many of these bands to which you react are very weighty and downright depressing. Don't let that get on you or in you. Let their lessons teach you what not to do. I love that you understood the essence of this song without delving into the origins of the story. Don't go looking for it, it will permanently change the way you enjoy the song. It will strip the innocent way you approached and received it.
The instrument David Gilmour played the solo is a console steel guitar, the characteristic sound is done by rubbing a piece of a hard object on the strings.
Girls there's so much to tell you. First of all its great to see kids of your age is listening to music of Pink Floyd. First of all the video playing on the big screen is the music video of the song. Second that instrument is called by different names. Steel guitar, Lap Guitar, Slide guitar and so on. And it has frets in it like a guitar. And lastly but very importantly listen to this song some ten years later. You'll have a very different appreciation for this song.
I wanted to see Sir David Gilmour live once. I don't know if it will ever happen but knowing i grew up with PF and Mr Gilmour's guitar magic makes me feel good. Atleast i grew up with PF and still listen to them everyday and will do so for the rest of my life. God bless PF. God bless Sir David. God bless us all !
And well, the horizontal guitar is called a Pedal Steel Guitar. They are mainly used in country & western by the way. It's not a lap steel though, as have been said in the comments. That is like it, but literally rests on your lap. The Pedal Steel Guitaar is the one that stands.
The lap steel guitar is most often found in Country music because it can have a keening sound that echoes the lament found in many, especially older, country songs. It's a guitar with steel strings, like a standard electric guitar, but it's played with a metal slide on at least one finger that allows the player to slip and slide from note to note without the characteristic staccato pop normal guitar fingering produces. Slide guitar, that is playing a guitar with a slide, is also found in a lot of blues music where the technique can be heard both on an electric guitar and occasionally on acoustic guitar, which produces an often mournful sound.
Watching your video reminds me of when I rented the original live at Pompeii on video tape in like 1984. My dad he did NOT like rock music he was into classical and broke but he sat down commenting about the percussionist i.e. the drummer and then watching David Gilmour solo. One of the few bonding moments I remember positively with my dad.
Everything about this song will make sense when you're older. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and played out by Pink Floyd. It's more about journey of life, how it was greener in the start & it spirals off when the layers are removed slowly. Enjoy life, that's it. That's the message. Cheers.
Thank your father for introducing you to all this fantastic music. My children, and even my little brother thanks me for doing the same for them. Music will always be there for you. Good luck!
The instrument he was playing is called a Steel Guitar. It looks like a neck of a regular guitar. He uses a metal cylinder and slides it up and down the neck to create the notes. It allows Gilmour to put more feeling into his solo. The concert was in the oldest amphitheater on the planet. David Gilmour was the first live performance in that amphitheater since 79 AD
While walking through fairie, there are dark forests, even dragons in the perilous realm, but there is always light and hope breaking through on our path. You are both on a special pilgrimage. Thanks for letting us join you. David Gilmour and Steve Hackett are great guitar tour guides through the perilous realm. Grateful for your thoughtful comments and your Dad's musical selections.
Talk about one of the all-time greats of progressive rock! The shows that Pink Floyd puts on are simply amazing and exquisite. Keep up the great work you guys, and rock on!🤘🤘
The lap guitar solo at the end is simply perfection. And I'll echo with Lobo The Main Man said; this song as a very melancholy meaning and it's something you'll understand when you get older.
The Division Bell is the "last" album from Pink Floyd released in 1994, which was promoted during the PULSE tour in 1995. He later performed this song in the Live at Pompeii (for istance, the double ii pronounced like the english "e" ;) ), in the same amphitheatre where Pink Floyd played in 1971, which is one of their best live shows
Welcome to Pink Floyd. Can’t wait to see you be blown away by more David Gilmour guitar magic in the future. Also, the instrument he’s playing is called a lap steel guitar. It is essentially a guitar that you play horizontally. The “rollie” thing is a metal tube that he runs across the strings as he plucks them. There are markings, called frets, on the lap steel guitar just like any other guitar or ukulele and that’s how he knows where to slide the steel cylinder.
the words of wisdom a father gives to his children are often lost in the recesses of memory until the day comes when you find yourself imparting those same words unto your own young . well stated father . continue to share with your children the wisdom of life it is one of the greatest obligations we have . they may not understand or even seem to hear your words but they are always listening and somewhere your words resonate within them .
magnets and miracles is a reference to your childhood, where everything is amazing and wonderous...this entire album is mellow af, gotta hear more from it
David Gilmour experimented with a normal electric guitar for this song, but could never get the sound he desired, and so decided to use the lap steel. Another great use for this instrument is The Great Gig in the Sky. Try Pulse Live, 1994 for that one (this song too!). Basically, if they played it at Pulse, it's the best live version you'll see.
The metal thingy is called a slide. You can use it on a regular guitar too. So whether there is markers or not, yes he is placing it where the frets are or would be.
Nailed it Claire. What you are hearing is guitar effects. You really need to go to a concert. Step up dad! Your doing great so far. Thank you so much man. When it comes around, take the kids to a kick ass show please. It’s next!
🤘❤️🤘 So Hi teens. Did you know that Nightwish actually does a Tribute cover of this!? And there's a live video as well?? Marko (the wizard/Viking bassist) actually sings it and very well. Empu (lead guitar) does a fantastic job as well!!! Maybe ask Dad about seeing it, or better yet reacting to it!?? I sure hope so!!! 😁🤘🤘 ✌️
And on that same album is another of Floyd's greatest songs, "A Great Day for Freedom". If "High Hopes" instilled an appreciation for the brevity of Human life then this song will provide insight to a major moment in History.
The instrument you were wondering about is a lapsteel guitar. It is used for slide guitar playing. If I remember right, the song is about the world not being what he as a child expected or wanted the world to be. Something like that.
Like to see those very young people to like this old good music, with real instruments (also "strange" like the steel guitar), real musicians and composers who are able to give emotions to many different generations because they are out of time and passing fads.
Their Pulse concert was one of the greatest concerts ever performed. If you watch Comfortably Numb Pulse, or Great Gig in the Sky Pulse you won't be disappointed. Great Gig in the Sky is a person lying on their deathbed, and then the moment of their soul leaving their body, set to music.

I honestly didn't think someone so young would get the idea behind this song so solidly, but you nailed it. Well done.
Oh, and he's playing a custom slide guitar there.
David Gilmour, the singer and guitarist, is a master at his craft. Listen to more when you can.
Appreciate the comment Tommy.
This is from their last studio album the division Bell from 94 where they did the world tour for the division Bell where the concert post was recorded from as well I must say it’s great seeing a new generation enjoying Pink Floyd makes me happy
I'm happy you noticed that they echoed one another. It's always my favourite part in any solo when one instrument echoes another.
The instrument David Gilmour plays at the end is a Laptop Guitar, the tube he runs up & down the strings with his left hand gives that sliding sound.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of David Gilmore and Pink Floyd
The instrument David Gilmour played the solo is a console steel guitar, the characteristic sound is done by rubbing a piece of a hard object on the strings.
Y'all should watch the original Pink Floyd video for this song. It's amazing!
One of the few bonding moments I remember positively with my dad.
this song came out when I was about your age & I remember it hitting me right in my stomach . Been a Pink Floyd fan ever since
Everything about this song will make sense when you're older. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and played out by Pink Floyd. It's more about journey of life, how it was greener in the start & it spirals off when the layers are removed slowly. Enjoy life, that's it. That's the message. Cheers.
The guy next to David Gilmore on the bass its the same guy that you said it was 19 on the comfortably numb video.Guy Pratt.
More Pink Floyd. Do some Rush, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen. Great 70's bands
He later performed this song in the Live at Pompeii (for istance, the double ii pronounced like the english "e" ;) ), in the same amphitheatre where Pink Floyd played in 1971, which is one of their best live shows
I just happen to have been listening to this song a lot lately. Glad you chose it!! It's a great song!!
You know what is also beautiful, "Don't fear the Reaper", don't be afraid to die...Sweethearts.
enjoy your years now kids, it will never be the same when you hear the same song 20 years later :)
This song has a special meaning for me, I love it.
This is progressive rock at it's best. It was allowed to die, and what was left got under the metal banner. See Devin Towsend.
I love you guy's. I never heard this song before, and you made it better than if I watched it by myself. Thanks!
Yay...so fun to introduce you to something new to you.
the words of wisdom a father gives to his children are often lost in the recesses of memory until the day comes when you find yourself imparting those same words unto your own young .
well stated father . continue to share with your children the wisdom of life it is one of the greatest obligations we have . they may not understand or even seem to hear your words but they are always listening and somewhere your words resonate within them .
You say it so much more eloquently than I do.
@@3YearsApart1613 thank you . the words used are less important than the message .
Peace be the journey
magnets and miracles is a reference to your childhood, where everything is amazing and wonderous...this entire album is mellow af, gotta hear more from it
David Gilmour experimented with a normal electric guitar for this song, but could never get the sound he desired, and so decided to use the lap steel.
It’s next!
I don't know how often i've listened to this song...
And in earlyer recordings he actually played the Dobro part on the Guitar!
You've just been bewitched by the great David Gilmour, next lesson kids Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb Live Pulse
That lap steel guitar is haunting and beautiful and emotional. Love that solo
I would love to watch their reaction to the whole Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii docu.
you would stick around for a whole reaction on that??
🤘❤️🤘 So Hi teens. Did you know that Nightwish actually does a Tribute cover of this!? And there's a live video as well?? Marko (the wizard/Viking bassist) actually sings it and very well. Empu (lead guitar) does a fantastic job as well!!! Maybe ask Dad about seeing it, or better yet reacting to it!?? I sure hope so!!! 😁🤘🤘 ✌️
Oh yeah, I definitely think it's time to open up the Floyd catalogue for them now!!! 😁🤘🤘
"Overlooked by our generation, and super epic". What a what a deep insight from someone so young. That was awesome.
Like to see those very young people to like this old good music, with real instruments (also "strange" like the steel guitar), real musicians and composers who are able to give emotions to many different generations because they are out of time and passing fads.
He’s playing a lapsteel which is I guess “some alteration of a guitar”. Early versions of the song were played with an electric guitar ending solo.
‘It’s so great to take a break from all the AAAAARGHHHHHHSOSOSKKSPSKSP!!’ - So true! Kids are so honest - it’s great to hear. Good review guys!
"Super epic" and "unknown to our generation" is so spot on! This song never fails to send chills to my spine, and on a bad day, a tear or two even...
