  • Driving around the world as a family is no easy task. Our living quarters for this journey will be our Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, the single most expensive addition we're adding to our build. But then again, that makes sense, right? It is our home after all.
    Our Jeep Gladiator overland build series continues by giving you a tour of our Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, including video of the install onto the back of our Gladiator, DAUNTLESS.
    We do our best to show you why we picked the Alu-Cab Canopy Camper as our home and explain the features we like most.
    For more information, visit alu-cab.com.
    Remember, if you want to see DAUNTLESS in person, we will be at Overland Expo Mountain West and Overland Expo West this year (2021).
    Hope to see you there and hope you enjoy this tour of our home.

    🌎 Who we are and what we’re doing:
    We’re Eric + Brittany + Caspian Highland, and we’re getting ready to drive around the world! June-August 2021, we’ll be working on our Jeep Gladiator build. By late August or early September, we hope to cross the southern border in Mexico. Over the next 10-15 years, we intend to drive through all six habitable continents on the planet. We started traveling full-time in February 2014 and have never looked back.

    We're driving around the world and community is really important (and necessary) for us! Unlike most people, we can't just call up a local friend and say, "Hey you wanna grab a coffee?" We're essentially out here by ourselves. So we ask you to join our small but growing community that helps us navigate life as friends. If you would be willing to invite us to the equivalent of a cup of coffee once a month, we invite you to join our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/hourlesslife We'd love to get to know you and to have you as part of our special community that helps us get around the world. ~ Eric + Brittany + Caspian | Hourless Life

      It was a weird feeling. We finally got to take the rig out of the first shop today. So we took it back to my brother-in-law's place and started packing it up. We already have some ideas of minor modifications we want to make just based on our lifestyle and gear. We'll see how it all pans out. I'm sure it will take us a few nights to start getting into a new rhythm. We were so used to living out of GUARDIAN (our Jeep Wrangler) that we had that process pretty dialed in. This is all new to us and it is exciting for sure! ~ Eric

    I just notice you switched the door swing - for me it was a deal-breaker to not be able to change the way it open. Everyone, I mentioned this change to looked at me as if I was from Mars as if, what difference would it make. All the difference in the world IMHO. This rig was optimized for RHD vehicle.
    OK4wd just emailed me on the "very new" narrow window for the Gullwing door. (not on website yet)
    BTW - I took the smaller bed platform off - just didn't figure we would need it at all. I may install a 1/3 size piece in its place using one of the hinges since you mentioned the stand-up desk use and a table to eat at during miserable weather.

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it could definitely have good applications. The smaller platform that is. I think the windows you are referring to are the GP Factor ones aren’t they? I’ve seen a prototype on someone’s rig online but haven’t seen them in person yet. ~ Eric

      @@HourlessLifeI just installed a prototype table 19.5" * 16" up top (passenger's side) and it will make a good size stand up spot and the way I have my accc set uip it can likely reman in the down position pretty much all the time - and with the hind I can have it up if need be. I think the design is a wrap. Now I need to figure out what naterial to use & buiild a proper table.

      Hi Joseph, great question and thank you for the kind words about our channel. We have a TON of travel content that we've uploaded after our build series. We cover every country we've been in since we left the USA back in October of 2021. I hope you took a moment to subscribe and hit that bell icon to be notified when we upload.
      As far as the awning walls. We heavily considered it. But at the end of the day, for overlanders there are four major considerations aside from price when it comes to gear. Where is it going to live inside or on the vehicle, how much space does it take up, how much does it weigh, and how often will we use it. We opted not to get it for now. We may revisit that idea when we get to Africa though.

      Haha. I'm going to guess that was a measure of snark since it was pretty much just me doing voiceover? The shop was really loud with all of the builds going on while I was filming. Thanks Matt. We aren't on a timeline. 10-15 years is just a guess. We are finishing up North America by 2023 so that leaves 5 habitable continents. If we do just two 2 years in each on average that would be 10 years. We've already been traveling 8 years full-time in North America so we don't think the estimate is unreasonable. • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Franklin. Thanks for the kind comments. The dry weight of the Alu-Cab Canopy Camper for the Gladiator is 462.9 lbs. Fully kitted out it can be just north of 550 lbs. So it is really a great use of payload capacity. As far as having the total weight? ABSOLUTELY! In the overlanding space, payload capacity, weight, and storage are high level considerations. Once the build is fully finished, and every tank is full and even the fridge is packed. We'll all three get in the vehicle and take it to a scale to get exact weight measurements. At THAT point we'll have the suspension built custom for the vehicle and the load out. ~ Eric

    Hey Guys, another great video.
    I was curious because I’ve watched other AluCab build videos, did they put any type of seal between the Jeep and Cab to prevent dust or moisture from entering?
    If not, do you wish it was there or is it not an issue? When it gets colder do you feel that the seams will be sealed enough?

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  2 роки тому

      So Juniper sealed the entire Alu-Cab and they are based out of Denver where it gets pretty cold. They do a ton of Alu-Cab installs so I’m fairly confident it will perform well. But we haven’t really put it to an extensive test. Ask me in a year. We’ll always be transparent. ~ Eric

    As always great video. Question, will the suspension be ok with the H2O tank? And does the tank have baffles? To help stop the water from aggressively shifting??

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  3 роки тому +10

      Great questions Dave. So the answer to both of your questions is "yes." However, one of them is a qualified yes. So the water tank does have built in baffles for that very purpose. Alu-Cab has literally thought of pretty much everything. For the suspension question, it is a qualified yes because we are doing suspension last. So between now and our 4th shop in the build the answer is no. But by August the answer will be yes. The reason we are doing suspension last however, is probably the most important part of this answer for those new to overlanding (not meaning you because I don't know your experience level) but for anyone reading. The general idea is to have every mod, every piece of gear, all of our stuff, tanks completely filled and us in the vehicle, and then go and weigh it and get exact weights for the entire vehicle, and by axle. Then and only then will we build the suspension for the weight we're actually carrying and where it is stored. Having said that we'll factor in Caspian's approximate weight as he gets older too. So in short, the suspension will be built around the actual load out, and we can't do that until the build is finished. Hope that makes sense. Seriously, a thoughtful question. ~ Eric

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  Рік тому

      Hi Stephen, it is a great unit. We are really happy with our decision. The tailgate was left with Juniper Overland as we had no need for it. We had the team at Juniper flip our entrance door to the Canopy Camper. So instead of opening from left to right like it comes out of the box, ours opens from right to left. This was based on our design of the rig to have a clean and dirty side. That’s a more complex discussion which we cover in another video. We relocated the National Luna light and the backup camera. So no worries there. Totally doable if your build has a need for the rear door flip. Shoot us a followup message on Instagram if you have any follow up questions! Happy to be a resource. ~ Eric

But for global travel, the world infrastructure is not ready for ultra low sulfur diesel, and any larger tires like 35, 37, or 40+ are pretty much non-existent in much of the world and would be prohibitively expensive to ship. ~ Eric

    How can you travel around the world when travel has been stopped?

      Now that’s the question of the hour. As of today, the furthest south we could drive is Nicaragua. We know that Mexico is open. So we start in October into Mexico. We’ll be there for 6 months (full visa length) and then into Belize. We’re hopeful that by March/April of 2022 more ground borders will continue to open. Obviously we’ll follow all laws, so we are at the mercy of ground borders. ~ E

      It ended up working out. As we made our way south, borders opened up. We are now in Ecuador. Hope you are still with us on the journey. ~ Eric

      Hello Jack. We haven't tabulated it all since we have 27 gear sponsors on this build. However we did put together a comprehensive article that may be of interest. We do plan on tabulating it all and when we do we'll add that as an article to our website as well. If you are interested in the specifics of the build, check this out: hourlesslife.com/jeep-gladiator-build-sheet-overlanding/ ~ Eric

      Hey Jack, are you talking about when I say "Fit kit?" That is what Alu-Cab calls it. So I was using their terminology. ~ Eric

      @@HourlessLife I just get a kick out of the word fitment, lots of gear guys use it and it always sounded like a mode up word to me. I'm just having a laugh.

    Have you thought of year down the line when your son may not want to sleep with you?

      Kind of. We've definitely given some thought of years down the road when we may not want to sleep with him. 😂 All kidding aside, I've addressed this multiple times on various videos. And to answer your question in brief, yes this has been thought through. ~ Eric
