    ABOUT VEDANTA
    Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
    Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

    Beautiful fragments of Swami Ji's lectures. 🙂
    These lectures have been given originally in Vedanta NY and it is NY's official channel. Original source lecture info. is also given.
    Nowadays, many channels are uploading clips of SwamiJi's lectures but don't provide any information regarding the original lecture. Some channels are genuine but some seem to be more interested in popularising their own channel and they should respect His works.
    These lectures given by SwamiJi are of extreme value. Integrity & authenticity of His work should remain well maintained.

    I studied Advaita Vedanta for several years and comparative religion for over 60 years. But, as with all religions, the question remains ‘what proof do you have which indicates the truth in Advaita Vedanta?’
    ALL the Abrahamic religions fail this question. 🙏

    Namaste -
    I request any one to comment on a Qn I have -
    "........ Jiva is the mind super imposed on the atman, / or the atman identified with the mind. .............".
    From this, is it correct to say the karana sareera / causal body can be equated with jiva ? Is it the same as the concept of "avyaktam"... the "blankness" of deep sleep (is that correct?) ? When the deep sleeper doesn't know anything, and but when he is asked, "who didn't know anything?", and he answers, "I didnt' know anything" or better still "I knew nothing", the "I" who answers to that question..... (not the thinking I because in deep sleep there is no thought).
    Thanks and Namaste !!

      # 1) These are just concepts to remove pertinent doubts & ignorance about the real Self. Avoid getting too entangled with concepts themselves. Focus on what they're pointing at.
      # 2) Jiva is not real. It's just an idea formed out of ignorance.
      # 3) .., Jiva is simply & practically that what you currently think you are.
      Or, that who is supposedly asking these questions, living this life, as a human, man/woman, etc. (Something else in some other life).
      - That one who's saying 'I' (in Ignorance), & the one to whom this 'I' of yours refers to (in current Ignorance).
      # 4) Theoretically / conceptually, in it's bare form the Jiva is this 'Ahamkara', i.e, this 'I' or I-notion of yours.
      - This 'I' is born from the Root Ignorance or Mool Avidya.
      - Avidya / Ignorance is Karan Sharira.
      - ...., "Vasanas" are also 'part'/aspect of Karan Sharira.
      Because the Vasanas cause or give rise to the body & behavioural tendencies that a Person (= Jiva) gets. This is somewhat equivalent of DNA or your Seed or mental / physical blueprint.
      # =>> So, In totality & commonly,
      Jiva is The Atman confined or 'coloured' by the Ahankara + (Blueprint + Mind + Body). That is 'I' appearing in Atman is Jiva along with the bodies it gathers in ignorance over lifetimes.
      # 5) So, this 'blankness' etc. is not the Jiva. Jiva is the one who thinks he slept, who says he knew nothing, who now thinks is waking or was dreaming at some point. And even the one who thinks he meditated, had a Samadhi (even if 1000 years long)!

      Thank you. I had all along kept on with your answers no.1 , 2 and 3 for quite some time, and thought this is a good opportunity to have a clarity. The answer no.4 was more helpful, yet it is exactly the "some places" you mention that I am stuck at. Still, you have restated it quite effectively and it has enhanced my thought and I would stay with that for some time. At no.5, you reinforced my stated understanding by saying ".....Jiva is the one who thinks he slept, who says he knew nothing, who now thinks is waking or was dreaming at some point. .....".
      Thank you !

    • @gameone6597
      @gameone6597 2 роки тому

      @@santhoshgopinath816 Namaste!
      Though not sure exactly what got clarified and what did not. Just adding something hoping it brings further clarity.
      # 1) You can totally forget/remove 'some places' without any loss for your practical understanding. That was caution/remark more relevant to 'academic / theoretical vari'. ((Removed it from the comment for others, someone else with similar nature of doubts. ))
      #2 ) If your doubt was around Jiva (as it appeared) then the correct answer to that is: There is No Jiva in reality (as in pt#2 orig. comm)! It is only a wrong thinking (Bhrama) in ignorance ( as ment. in pt#3 orig comm)
      #3) For the purpose of Adhyaropa - Apavada, i.e., highlighting to remove the error, Jiva has been conceptualized / explained, or, as it is experienced, mentioned in point #4 & summarised as (Atman + I + mind/bodies).
      #4) This is just one way/ method of expressing / explaining the same thing, Jiva in this case. Different people find different expressions to explain this Mayavi (anirvachaniya) phenomenon. For example, 'Reflected consciousness' etc.
      #5) These concepts/ models are supposed to serve the purpose of identifying the error for its correction. Not for 'studying' the error itself.
      # 6) Hence changing the focus from details/ variations of the theoretical constructs of error, to it's practical understanding may be more useful is the suggestion.
