    Thanks for the vid.
I just watched a video of a guy explaining how the gamma lids aren’t air tight by conducting a water test.
Then he went to the store he purchased them from and examined the lids there.
The molding used to make the lids had a place where the mold came together that caused the leak.
Be sure to examine the gamma lids thoroughly prior to purchasing!

What if ... the 1st ring that goes on , one used silicone in addition to the provided gasket ... because most likely your Never gonna take that 1st part off .. Then , then on the other screw on lid ... you put a thin layer of Petroleum Jelly on the rubber gasket ... it will help for a tighter seal .. and keep the rubber from drying out and becoming brittle over time ... ??????

For the Gamma lids. At first I put the rims on like you did. Very difficult. Then I tried another way which was easier. Using a clock for reference think of the 12, 6, 9 and 3 o’clock positions. If you start at the 9 o’clock position and push it down then go to the 3 o’clock position directly across then the 12 o’clock position then 6 o’clock position. Go across from the position you start. Don’t start in one spot and try to go all the way around because the last little bit is going to be very difficult and you might damage the rim with the mallet. On the second two positions push them down at the same time. Works for me.

I just purchased some gamma lids and the first thing I noticed was that they are NOT seal proof. So, I emailed the company and told them that the machine was leaving too much 'glue" in the four parts when the machine 'glues' them together and that maybe the ones I received was a bad batch. After much back and forth, here is the gist of what they told me.
I SAID: The sticker that comes with the lids says that they are AIRTIGHT.
RESPONSE VERBATIM: It is but those are little 1/8” o-rings and are not the best for long term storage. They are meant to keep air and rain out of the container for short times.
It is always best to use mylar bags or flat lids for long term storage. The gammas are designed for easy access to open and close.
Well, said I, if they are NOT airtight as you say on your response, then they CANNOT be good to "keep air and rain out of the container" NOT even for short times. Oh, well. Too expensive to send it back. I'll have to keep in mind that they are NOT airtight as the company person said.

I bought food grade buckets a Tractor Supply a few weeks ago. Buckets are $4.99, plain lids $2.69 and Gamma lids are $10.99 (as of Mar 17 2022). Lowes Home Improvement has a bucket wrench (removes lid) for $2.48. Harbour Freight rubber mallet is $2.99. I keep a rubber mallet in the kitchen and another one in my shop. Bucket wrench is well worth the few bucks that makes it so much easier to take off the snap on lids.

I've fought these lids for a couple years. But I have a couple of comments or suggestions for you.
The snap-on lid can be a drag to open, but you can buy a cheap tool that opens it really easy. Also, as I got older I found I didn't have the strength to put both styles of lids on and off.
What I found out is that I can place the lids in place on the buckets, and then I stand on them, and they snap right on. To do the GAMMA lids I put the ring with lid on it, and stand on them as well. You can feel them snap solid.
You may need to have a helper to aid in keeping you stabilized, but it works like a snap (pardon the pun), and you won't need to hammer it down.

I was put in Gamma Lids and a bunch of food grade buckets. I would beat the rings on with the side of my hammer head. Then one would not go on no matter how much I hit it. I took it the bathroom and used a hair dryer to warm it up and it went on easily. Try it on the next time you try to put a Gamma lid on a bucket.

I wonder if the Rubber Gaskets should have a thin coating of something like bees wax or baby oil or Petroleum Jelly to keep the rubber soft and pliable... as the rubber will most likely over time , dry out , become brittle and not seal well . I also think it would help in making them even more air tight as a little something on the seal would alow it to set in better ??? Especially for someone looking at storing something for 20-30 years ..

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 2 роки тому

Be careful. If the gasket is rubber, from what I understand, petroleum based lubricants can destroy it. If gasket is made from other materials, then the lubricant needs to be one compatible with that materials. Plant and animal based lubricants can also turn rancid over time. Further, I don't know that plastic buckets, if not stored in ideal circumstances will last 20-30 years. Depending on what's stored in the buckets, many things won't last that long either. The list is short of foods that have a 30 year life, IF properly stored. I don't know how long Mylar will last, if that's used with buckets. Plastic buckets are porous. How much depends on the plastic being used. Metal and glass may be better options if someone is trying to keep pinto beans for 30 years.

Kneel on the board using your body weight to push the adapter cleat over the bucket cleat. Turn the board 90º & repeat, kneeling on the board & use your body weight to apply a downward force to the adapter. Beating on the adapter is a very poor solution. This solution works better because the problem does not look like a nail!

@@WELSBYROOTS Well, thanks. I buy a product with the hope it doesn't devolve into some nutty goose-chase. I've resigned myself to taking a hit so, that's that. Cheers!

You should have put in some water and turned the bucket upside down with the gamma lid on to demonstrate if it was truly water/air tight. Another video called "Preppers Beware" showed the mold seams of the lid (not the rim) were interfering with the lid gasket function and the water leaked out. NOT AIR TIGHT as the label claimed, You may have performed a disservice to your viewers and your own credibility.
